Experiment successful, results - ONI together is bad idea.

There was a lot of problems during gameplay, as I told many times, most important problem is communication between players. Under communication I mean not only communication channels, such as chat, voice chat or something else, but also "same state of mind" of players, which is impossible to achieve.

Problems:

  1. NIH - nobody care about somebody else builds
  2. Different level of players, somebody build infinite storage, somebody 12 beach chairs for 3 duplicants
  3. Some things should be complex, but when you play "together", it's pretty difficult to find some important details. For an example, once somebody release infinite storage with oxygen and as result we have 47kg of oxygen per tile in all map; somebody set "make steel infinitely" and metal refinary dump all water reserves into space, because it was way how we fought with overheating.
  4. No general plan, a lot of time wasted into useless buildings. Cycle 120, almost all researches complete, but colony still in stone age era - 3 manual generators, 2 jumbo battery, 1 water sieve for toilets, dupes deliver dirt to meal lice farms, no generators etc.
  5. Trolls, who deconstruct base (actually, almost not a problem, in my memory it happen only 3 times, 2 times I reload game

If somebody want to try to run it again by his own, let me know, I will help to setup environment.

It's funny how the experiment confirmed most of our prediction related to the MP. Good job man, very good idea how to implement this, I'd say the experiment completed with success (experiment, not MP).

I'm sure that won't stop people for asking for MP, but it's good to have confirmation that this would be a bad idea.

Thanks for the summary :)

it depends what type multiplayer it would be, factorio self have too  that you build stuff and soo on with others, but area is soo big in this game  that it do-sent matter how others todo that

I believe that for a game like the oni to work multplayer it would have to change a little

instead of everyone controlling the same colony, it would be more interesting for each player to control a duplicate, so the more people playing at the same time, the more duplicates, when entering the server each one would choose between 3 dupes, and if the player died he would be taken again to this selection screen, that is, he died loses the dupe and his job progress

I think ONI together is a great idea.  If you have people you can actually coordinate with, I think it could be a lot of fun if you could play at the same time.  Unfortunately, this would require more than remote play, as each player would need their own camera and cursor.  Basically, each player would be a client viewing the world.

Plus, I could use this locally on my computer to keep an eye on multiple projects at once.  Or keep an eye on projects on different asteroids in the DLC.
