Corners: Do they exist?

So... I tried to sum all the corner weirdness in one spot. I don't think I covered everything but at least here are my observations.

What exactly is happening in corners? I think there is a hint they are not actually filled when you build two tiles diagonally instead of a 3 tile corner...

...but other than that, let's observe their weird behavior.

 

General observations

A room is a room even if it has no corners built.
Ability: I am a room and I know it.

Liquids don't leak through corners
Ability: I cannot squeeze through there

Crown molding shouts that corners are not real unless they are 3 tiles. Crown molding cannot exist unless the corner tile exists
Ability: I need a "proper" corner

Similar behavior has the wall pot: wall pot got jealous of crown molding and decided if the corner is not "proper", no building allowed (even though a wall pot is not useful in a corner..).
Ability: I need my corner built ASAP!

Dupes

Dupes , on the other hand, completely ignore corners. They can build/dig through a corner making it possible to isolate gases  or make vacuum rooms easily. They could also reach through a corner (but they can't anymore...RIP infinity corner, weird reach, food storage). That weird reach also allowed for some out of reach corner build ability.

Current abilities: I can build that. I can dig that. But I can't reach that

But there are more to corners...

 

Farm/Hydroponic tiles

The new addition to "corner reach" is the "Farm Tiles and Hydroponic Tiles now allow corner access for delivery chores." update. They now allow dupes to access them through a corner to deliver a seed or fertilizer, making this out-of-reach fertilizer problem go away

Auto sweeper

Auto-Sweeper can reach through corners making it possible for many outside the box builds  (There is also the "I can see through walls" telescope in a similar category but... that's not a corner :rolleyes:)

Critters

Critters normally respect corner built pneumatic doors. Even a shove vole would dig around them but not through them

But not pacu. Pacu ignores corner built pneumatic doors and can travel between them. It seems like it can see a teeny tiny gap and it is able to swim through that. (Fortunately they don't ignore mesh or other build tiles...)

Radbolts

Last but not least, a recent (and very helpful) diagonal pass-through-corners-enabled, is the ability of Radbolt generators. Radbolts seem to also have some weird corner behavior but very specific. The radbolt generator can shoot radbolts diagonally through a corner:

...down-right, down-left if it is directly above ...and up-right, up-left if it is one diagonal below.

Ability: I can go pew pew! Are there corners in the way?  Whatever...

This is good, can you do the same for cases where dupes reach or build through walls?

I can't work out the pattern but if the other side of the wall is accessible sometimes a dupe will just reach through it as if it's not there.

I've also seen that happening a couple of times but I don't know if it is a normal/recurring behavior or an "errand interrupted but dupe needs to finish it anyway" case. Either way, I haven't found the pattern yet :roll:

There are also several "dupe falling" unexpected scenarios, where they can teleport through walls upwards (at least I'm guessing it happens in "falling" situations), bounce or hover in mid air (seems this one was fixed) but are not very easy to reproduce in sandbox (well.. the bouncing was a funny accident :lol: )

To note: A Tempshift Plate is secretly a 3x3 building - in terms of heat exchange to tiles it behaves completely identically to another 3x3 800 kg building: the Coal Generator. The only difference other than building material options, is the Tempshift Plate only blocks a single tile in the background layer (though it's not unique in being a building that only blocks some of the tiles it covers: the Steam Turbine is a 5x4 building though it only blocks the top 5x3 tiles, yet it does exchange heat with the bottom non-blocking tiles just like with its blocking tiles, and the Heavi-watt join plate is the opposite: it blocks the "knob" tiles but is only a 1x1 building for heat exchange). In ONI there's no such thing as a building that isn't rectangular so with a proper understanding of what the Tempshift Plate actually is, it'd be much more surprising if it had a cross pattern.
