Why are fertilizers such a bad option for Wormwood?

Recommended Posts

I would like to ask why are fertilizers so ineffective for Wormwood?

Wormwood can use certain fertilizers to fertilize himself and to restore some amount of health, but Manure, Guano or Compost is with 2 health per use only as effective as eating Light Bulbs: One stack of Manure restores as much health as one stack of Light Bulbs, or 5 Butterfly Wings.

Another way of using Manure is to turn it into a Bucket-O-Poop which allows you to restore 10 times 3 health. But in total it's only a bonus of +10 health per Bone Shard and they're quite rare in general (unless you're fishing fish en masse & let them all rot, or have some quite suicidal players in your world). A single Bucket-O-Poop also takes up a whole slot in your inventory, unlike Healing Salve or Honey Poultice.

The Growth Formula is a fairly cheap way for Wormwood to restore health: 1x Kelp Fronds, 1x Ashes, 1x Empty Bottle for 30 health, and the bottle is returned after usage. But even if it's cheap, it's only utilizeable in the ocean: 2/3 ingredients are only obtainable in the ocean, same as the bucket it also takes a whole slot per Formula in your inventory, and besides that it needs to perish for 3 days first before it becomes useable.

Only Compost Wrap might be useful for Wormwood right now, but also only for journeys: It takes even longer to be applied and using multiple Compost Wraps at once won't reward you with the +15 health over time.

While Manure and Rot are required to make the Compost Wrap, and the Growth Formula might be a cheap healing source only in the ocean, Wormwood does literally have no use for Guano, Compost, the Bucket-O-Poop, or Glommer's Goop in terms of fertilizing himself.

It's not like I'm not able to handle Wormwood's health penalty (sometimes it feels more like a buff rather than a penalty), it's about the fact that Shít is currently useless for Wormwood in terms of fertilizing himself. Don't let Shít be his biggest nightmare in the constant. Peoples do think that Wormwood enjoys Shít as much as he enjoys digging in Shít with his bare hands or rubbing Shít straight into his face, but in reality he actually avoids Shít because of the low efficiency of Shít and because too much Shít just makes him crazy (due to the fact that Shít thrown by Splumonkeys still makes him insane. Seriously: Fix that already Klei). Buffing the healing effect of Manure, Guano, Compost from 2 health per use to 5-8 health per use (depending on fertilizers) and adjusting the healing Bucket and the Formula, or allowing Wormwood to utilize his blooming effect outside of spring with the help of fertilizers might change Wormwood's mind about Shít.

All of the materials can be brought to land though. You can bring a bunch of bottles, which will never run out because they are returned when the formula starter is used up, and you can plant kelp stalks right by the shore, so you can harvest them without stepping foot on a boat.

What kind of use does the Growth Formula have on land for Wormwood?

I agree it would be fun and fitting for the different and new fertilizers to have a more noticable effect on Wormwood but i also worry that would trivialize his HP downside. If butterfly wings are simply replaced by guano is it even that much of a downside anymore? A cap of 5 hp might be acceptable just to add some variance between all the different ferts.

Or better fert healing might be interesting if he could also no longer heal from Salves and Poultices idk

Making self fertilizing play a role in forcing Blooming instead of just more healing would be much more interesting though! :apple: It could be that he needs to balance all three nutrients within himself in order to bloom

Ways for how to restore 150 health as Wormwood (Fertilizers are in Bold):

  • 150 Hunger + 1.5 Life Giving Amulets
  • 75x Manure/Guano/Compost
  • (30x "any item which restores 5 health")
  • 5x Bucket-o-poop or 5x Growth Formula (50 or 25 uses in total)
  • 18.75x Spider Glands
  • 7.5x Healing Salve
  • 33% of a Fur Roll + 150 Hunger
  • 3.33x Compost Wrap
  • 5x Honey Poultice
  • 29.41% of a Bat Bat (22 Attacks)
  • 1.25x Jellybeans
  • 17% of a Tent + 75 Hunger
  • 17% of a Siesta Lean-To + 25 Hunger

Considering the fact that Wormwood is able to restore 150 health with the help of a Siesta Lean-To and 2 red caps (and doing so also rewards him with Living Logs depending on his health), I wouldn't say that a buff from 2 health to 5 or 8 health would trivialize his HP downside, it would more like give him a reason to gather manure, guano or compost.

How would adding more and easier ways for Wormwood to heal not trivialize his downside? The best healing methods on that list are the ones that require effort like crafting items or structures. In the case of the Lean To u forgot to mention that to heal 150hp ud have to be stuck in there for quite a while. Not to mention ud have to craft it first and its only usable during the day.

8hp is a lot of healing, ask the majority of the cast who basically exclusively heal from wings until they have a crockpot.

More healing from fertilizers would be nice as itd be more fitting for his character but imo itd have to then become the only way he can heal or something

I do "agree" with you: It does "indeed" require more effort to gather 16 logs, 9 cut grass and 2 silk, or 4 twigs, 9 cut grass and 6 silk compared to 450 Manure. Also healing 150hp via manure takes only 75 seconds compared to the 75 seconds in the siesta or tent and it comes with the "bonus" that you'll be able dodge all the incoming attacks which you otherwise wouldn't need to dodge. Also the pre-crafted Tent requires "definetly" more inventory slots compared to the manure.

Jokes aside: I don't think buffing manure from 2 health to 5 health and guano & compost from 2 health to 8 health would make Wormwood OP or any other available healing source underpowered.
