This is something I first noticed after playing Hamlet, that for some reason in areas where Klei could simply copy and paste content they make tweaks to them. In Hamlet they introduced pigeons to Don't Starve, though there had already been pigeons, in the Gorge for DST. However, the pigeons had been redrawn. In the Gorge there were also several assets that could have been re-imported, like meat scraps/morsels or fish/salmon, or having regular or shaved beefalo instead of this poor dying ones bound by a yoke. Recently wobsters were added in RoT, though the they have different visuals and new dens. So does anybody know why Klei does things this way? I'm not complaining at all, I love the amount of heart put into DST, I'm just curious.

Probably to not make the things they do feel "cheap" and low effort?

Anybody could just copy-paste assets and make a mod like that. Guys from Klei are above that level.

Sometimes also they re-design stuff to fit the mood of the game. Shipwrecked/Hamlet/DST, they all have different mood to them and it's better if they have these differences.

I have made a "Chocolate Bar" item in the past in one of my mods. I have introduced a "chocolate bar" skin for one of my new modded items.

Now, I could just simply reuse my old art and it would be fine, wouldn't it? But it would feel really cheap also.

Your timeline's a little off here, it's more likely that Hamlet's pigeons came first. Keep in mind that Hamlet was announced (and likely decently far along in development) at the same time that the Forge was announced, which was over half a year before the Gorge. Regardless, I remember it being said on a Hamlet dev stream (terrible source, I know, sorry!) that the different pigeons were due to the DS and DST teams having completely different artists, and so they ended up designing pigeons independently of each other.

Yeah.. but we have something called the Clean Sweeper now.

and I’m not sure how far Klei plans to go with that things uses... but I have noticed in certain parts of the game such as for example- Pearls Island.. She has some very different looking versions of common Saplings.

With a lot of people focusing on building mega bases (I don’t but I’m not going to discredit those of you who do..) The Clean Sweeper should allow those people to change the look of Already placed structures within the game.. So using the above example-

You can turn all those generic Saplings into Pearls Island Variants.

I would Imagine this would work the same way with things like Wobster Dens, Berry Bushes, Catcoon Dens, Pighouses, you get the idea...

Basically the TL:DR- The Clean Sweeper can allow us to do more than just change the skins of our inventory items and craftables, it could also allow us to change the look of things in our world..

Therefore in Theory allowing your world to be even more unique and different from other players.

I For one enjoyed the HELL out of Shipwrecked.

Spoiler

I grew up loving pirate related stuff, I had that fisher price pirate toyset with like 1000 pirate accessories to go with it, I’ve even had pirate themed birthday parties on ACTUAL Pirate Ships.. My birthday is later this month.. And a friend of mine who knows how much I’m into the whole Pirates thing bought me ATLAS as an early birthday gift.

My dads Birthday is September 19th- Otherwise known as National Pirate Day..

I just wanted to put all this out there Simply to say to a Klei that the new Crab King Mast skin resonates closer to me more than any of you guys realize, so Thank You for that it literally made my birthday this year.

Back on topic- is it really such a bad thing that I want to use the clean sweep to make my world look more Shipwrecked-Like?

I think Klei is really going out of their way to not be considered cheap or lazy, and if you ask me, I'd say they are one of the most hard-working companies I've ever seen. I have so much respect towards them that I actualy check these forums, which is something i never do for other games.

Still, I do sometimes wonder why they don't reuse some assets.

I find it really annoying.

In some cases, mobs and items from Hamlet and Shipwrecked don't fit thematically in DST, so it makes sense that a lot of things aren't ported.

But...THERE ARE SOME ITEMS AND MOBS THAT HAVE NO REASON NOT TO BE PORTED AND ITS SO ANNOYING SEEING THEM WASTED

For instance, how magnificent would it be to have a spyglass in DST. With boats being so slow in DST, the Spyglass makes more sense to be in DST than Shipwrecked.

And what sucks even more, is when you see items that could have had great potential, be turned into skins in DST.  Like the Safe from The Gorge for example. You know how annoying it is keeping items safe in public servers? Extremely. If only we had like a safe or something, where we could keep things locked away from other players. Meanwhile Klei: LOL GONNA TURN IT INTO A FRIDGE SKIN LMAO.

Ugh.

game developers does not take into consideration whether you trust people you play with or not
nothing stops anyone from burning your world down yet i dont see anyone asking for something that prevents this

I’ve asked for it Multiple times and I’ve even referenced Minecraft as an excellent example as to how it should work.. DST will ALWAYS be compared to MC simply because it’s the game that DST most closely relates to.

However... MC isn’t the best selling game to ever be created simply just because it’s “Blocky an Kid Friendly..” It Earned That title by having Quality of life features that DST SHOULD HAVE- Features like being able to set your own personal playing preferences on a Server, or as the Server Admin- the ability to toggle every player who joins Server Rights.

If I’m suppose to play DST with random strangers and make new friends.. why do I feel safer with my worlds password locked playing mostly alone?

The TL:DR in MC my little sister can play in Peaceful/Creative Mode never being challenged by enemy mobs or danger, where as I can be in the same world with her playing on Hard Survival Mode.

As Admin I can choose to “Trust” my little sister with the ability to light fires and them spread a crossed the land, or I can choose to make structures SHE and only SHE tries to light on fire Immune to damage from her.

Heck man even ROBLOX has features that allows you to “Trust” or “Disallow” players from interacting with your personal belongings that you place.

Something that DST could really use TBH... because as someone who enjoys playing as Willow from time to time.. I’m tired of her being blamed as the person who lights all the fires.

ANYONE can Build a Torch.. ANYONE Can Build a Hammer.. But should ANYONE just be able to Destroy someone else’s placed structures?

I have to disagree. Minecraft isn't Don't Starve. Don't Starve was built with the idea of being of a cruel, single-player rogue-like. Don't Starve Together is especially focused on coordination and teamwork, even in usage of resources. Fire has always been super destructive in the single-player version as well. I mean just about everybody's burnt down a forest trying to prevent winter freezing. Griefers are inevitable in every game, but a trust-lock feature like you're suggesting seems kinda excessive.

you need to chill out. calm down. the devs have more important and major updates that they've been focusing on. their funding and time is split between multiple different projects. dont starve togther is regularly updated with reworks, patches, and entirely new content. not only are you getting an entire dlc for free, you're also getting TONS of new content and active updates and feedback from the developers. yes, minor quality of life patches would be great, but you need to learn to be patient and grateful. the devs are people with their own lives and priorities, and not everything revolves around what you personally want for dst. mods are the way you get the game that you want while you wait for the devs to work on what they're working on. they could absolutely just abandon the game now, stop working on it, and move on to a new project.

like, just in general, the people here are incredibly ungrateful and abusive towards klei. you need to learn to take it down a notch and actually be grateful for all the hard work and fun content they're already giving us. maybe even find another hobby to look into for a while, taking a break can help when you get frustrated with something.

Here’s the thing I don’t get- The Content Updates Klei is doing to DST is all 100% completely free of any additional charges.

So therefore if they wanted to re-use old content without making any changes at all to them within DST it is perfectly FINE for them to do so.. because I’m not going to feel like I’m being sold something I’ve already bought before.

There are Other game companies who would charge you money just to fight the same mobs you’ve been fighting all along but just with a new skin design on them.

As much as I loved the 2009 game Borderlands & still to this day it’s my favorite game of all time- Even someone who loved the game that much.. Can admit to its flaws, The Fourth DLC Add On- Claptraps Robot Revolution was crap.. a Cheap Reskin Of Enemy types you had ALREADY Fought..

And after the Amazing Sequel Quality add on that came before that- Secret Armory Of General Knox... CRR fell flat on its Face!

With DST this is a Different story though- I’m not paying Klei ANYTHING for their Return Of Them Updates.. So None Of you can really get too upset if they re-used Content from past expansions.

maybe you have trust issues that are not game related
the issue is with the people that are jerks, not the game

Then in that case, let's just disable the Rollback feature.
