How are you cooling cool steam vents on new maps

Recommended Posts

So how are you guys doing without steel/gold. Or are you making steel before even trying? Im asking this especially focusing on new ppl. I normally use 1 or more atmo suits then insulate an area, dig it all and make an water polluted water lock.

Then i use radiant gas pipes with hydrogen from electros to cool the steam but i cant pump it till having gold/steel.

I found some gold in my map but im going to still try without it.

Im on oasis without any cold natural source " for condensing i can use salt water too the hard part is being able to pump it or cool the pool of water in usable temperatures make suck it all with pitcher pumps and mass ice machines?

If I didn't have access to gold I'd certainly use steel - you don't want to spend more effort cooling things than you need to, especially water since it has a high heat capacity (even post-patch it's much better to use hot water for an electrolyzer and then try to cool the oxygen down instead of cooling the water down, because oxygen's heat capacity is way lower than water). I don't know why you'd choose to make it without gold - if you aren't using gold for that then what are you trying to use gold for? Cold steam vents/water geysers are pretty much as valuable as gold gets, so if it's not worth using gold there then I don't know what you're saving it for.

Im not saving im intentionally simulatin the lack of gold for this purpouse :). And yeah i agree with you thermo regulators time to shine! But first some steel or rush that gold :).

I just let it flow down a decent amount into a pool.  It tends to cool naturally to the point where you can use a normal pump.  If you mean cooling the actual top of the vent to make it condense more water, I'm just not doing it.  They produce enough water without that step to make them useful and with the lack of heat deletion I don't think it is important to make them your primary source of water anymore.

If you're on the oasis map steel shouldn't really be that hard to get - the oasis map gets a lot of oil biomes, and they aren't all at the bottom of the map so you'll probably have more fossils than you know what to do with.

Also, I would never use a thermo regulator for that. A thermo regulator is way less efficient than an aquatuner - a thermo regulator with hydrogen spends about 4x as much power as an aquatuner using polluted water for the same amount of heat transfer, and if you're talking about sending the oxygen through a thermo regulator that's even worse. It'd be much better to use an aquatuner to cool something down and then jus tpipe the oxygen through whatever you cooled down.

rather than using hydrogen, you could use either polluted water or salt water the same way. It will pull more heat out and might bring the temp down to something a copper or aluminum pump can handle, depending on the input temp.

I usually seal the edges of the vent area with insulated tiles so the heat is contained.  And build a insulated pit below.

Have a breeding farm for tropical fishes - thus lowers the temperature down to the tropical fishes body temperature  (they're born at a fixed temperature).

You could transfer that to a paku pool (also fixed temperature)  and to a gulp fish pool  down to 20-25 degrees.

Fishes have very short life cycle and breed cycle.     They're great heat sinks since they'll die and  you can just eat them. lol

Going to try it now i have lead for the radiant liquid pipes. For the condensing part the hydrogen was working just for pumping part that not. My water in the main base will get to 55c i guess if i use this method then i just need ice machines.

you could also heat it up to use it in a steam turbine.

might be lategame, but gets the water cooled down.

Yes metallic normally i do it in a similar way but im simulating a new player without gold/steel/plastic.

oh, okay, will try to come up with some easy ways to cool steam vent.

of course yo ucould hope for a cool slush geyser, polluted water geyser or salt water geyser, but i guess we shouldnt be too dependant on luck.

Cool the steam with hydrogen to make it condense into near-boiling water. Allow the water to flow down into a water lock, which is essentially a U shaped lake. This should prevent steam from escaping.

On the outside of the water lock, build a pitcher pump, which doesn't reach the bottom (can't empty the water lock). Add ice makers next to it. Dupes will then take 90+ C water and drop it off in the ice makers. Use the ice to cool the area and you have low temperature water from the melted ice. You could bring the melted water back into the water lock to cool it and eventually it will be below 75 C and you can start to pump using a regular pump.

I haven't tried this, but it's the only solution I can think of if it's without gold amalgam and pre-steel and using the current game mechanics.

This thread is awesome. Thinking about this issue made me realize what I want for a mid game cooling system.

I learn it just today! Now ill start to make pacu pools :) seeme a cool concept to me sinergyze things with critters especially geysers im trying hard now to squeaky puft farm i got 3 chlorine geysers in arboria.

I was using only for condensation so it was going out of the loop for cooling very rarelly but youre totally right anyway tuners far stronger :). Now i changed maps im in arboria.

Here's my idea :

I use CO2 in a radiant pipe in the cool steam vent's room to cool the steam. When the CO2 is hot, I give it to my slicksters or you can send it to the space.

I store the gas in a tank under the vent as well I can loop the gas for free. I use automated valve with thermo sensor to extract the hot gas.

That seems to be really good! I dont have a slickster ranch at the moment but an close to it " i also do not have co2 killed most of it with skimmers.

Yea-   One way to utilizing the cooling method is to just zig zag the pipes like a radiator through the tropical pool.  and then through the paku pool.  So the water in the pipe just goes lower and lower as they move through the pool.  the fishes will soak up the heat and exchange with the water in the pipes.  The last pool (optional) and might require some automation  depending on the water's temperature as you don't want to have the water raise the  gulpfish pool too high.  but the gulp fishes will in fact lower things down    - just make sure the water is above 25 before passing through their pool.

It works out pretty well lowering   80degrees water down to  like 25 or less.

I usually build around geyser vacuum tile to prevent it to heat the surrounding area in early game. Leaving 2 tiles closest to abyss cool it doqn a bit. One you have like 3 tiles of water (so 12 tiles in total below geyser) it will cool dowb steam to water. And use hot water for electrolyzers. Water cool steam - pump excess l - and no heat leakage. Works pretty well for me.
