Current state of the ice machine

Recommended Posts

I did some pretty basic testing and it seems as though the ice machine is still a bit more than a heat pump.

It removes somewhere between 20 and 22 kDTU/s from the water/ice inside it, while only heating its surroundings by 16 kDTU/s.

I don't remember what its heat output was before. Anyone? When it first came out I thought it was a problem - until I tried to actually exploit it, when I realized you can't really do anything industrial with it because it's one errand per 30kg. Not really scalable.

Anyway, you can still get some real work out of this machine. But, I don't really think it was a problem before.

Lol. Glitchator has spoken ^^

By the way, I really hope they'll find a way to correct remaining "infinity stones".

it the fun thing those really late game player going(800hour+)
I don't think any normal player will go all out of their way to mess with all those glitch stuff.

Why? Exploits in a single player game hurt no-one if they don't choose to use it. (Although admittedly matter conversion doubles as a bug.) I have a similar problem with the Unofficial Skyrim Patch fixing exploits because... it's another feather for them to strut around with like some sort of Peacock?

The sad part is the new player can't avoid them.

  • Melting ice.  Better make sure you do it right or you will enable matter duplication..
  • You want to play around with your first cooler to make LOX, or freeze CO2... beware.
  • You let a flatulent dupe near your steam geyser.  Welp, now it's a NG geyser (no more worries about having enough gas to cook your food, but you might not have enough water to grow it....)
  • Where did all your chlorine go that you were hoping to use for slime cleaning?????
  • The list goes on.

These "infninity exploits" unfortunately aren't just there as exploits, rather they cause very unpredictable (for a newbie and most veterans as well) behavoir. If you embrace liquid duplication and matter conversion, you can fully avoid it, but man is it hard to.

This is why these exploits really do need to be dealt with, but I'm not sure they will get obliterated....

I for one am glad that you are still persistently bringing this matter up front, maybe your efforts will be rewarded and they'll get fixed.

Still I believe that Ice Maker is not a cooling solution. It's literarly a machine to make ice, the nerf supoorting this belief. We should get more varied cooling solutions. Ones that can be scaled up to boot. Cause relying on just a trickle of permanent solutions is a major source of frustration - ranting while building my umpteenth steam turbine setup.

I can't like this sentiment enough. Thank you Yunru

edit: remember how much fun it was discovering these? why would we deny that to other players?

Because sometimes, without the wish to use it, it happened into a setup, and often mess it up, or rarely, increase its efficiency.

I'm not using glitch by principle (as you said, if I don't want them, I don't use them), but I've encountered each one at least once. So there's no need to aim for a specific glitch, it could happened, and if I get that a glitch increase or decrease the efficency of my setup, it disappoints me. And of course even more if it mess up my setup...

What's the "right" way to melt ice, to avoid mass duplication?

You can do it just fine by running ice through doors, making sure they are not next to walls on on any side. If they door has a wall on the left or right, you run the risk of matter annihilation (another great bug that could be exploited for heat removal). If the door has walls below it, then matter duplication occurs.  Put several doors in series through the middle of a large pool, and you'll melt the ice just fine without duplication (hopefully).

Suits shout now store the NG until the dupe removes it. That should mostly fix this issue. As I do not take flatulent dupes (just too much of a hassle), I cannot be sure though.

Well considering the fact, that fair share of us even have different opinions on "what didn't go our way", this would be more like bunch of old ladies who don't listen to each other or are expert at ignoring opinions of other people... but wait, if you substitute old ladies with "politicians" it'll suddenly start to make sense.

Anyway now that the contructive part of the post is over. Addressing the topic title:
I think the current state of ice machine is just as it should be (matter duplication aside, that's different mechanics problem). It's just like fertilizer synth and it can probably stay that way. After all fertilizer gives us useful product AND useful secondary product (which in case of ice maker, is just a little bit of cooling traded for dupe labor).
