Greybear
So, the new seeds (currently playing terra) seem to have way less cold biomes and wheezeworts. I don't mind that too much, except for the fact I don't really know how to handle heat without them. Should I just move it away to somewhere and seal that area off? I really don't want to use exploits with fixed temperature machines - not really my style. Although the developers seem to push us in that direction... metallichydra
you can use Thermo regulators / aquatuners - heat up water to make steam - or just heat up a room to "store" it for later. venting heated gasses into space. there's not really many ways to deal with heat at the moment. Greybear
I do have what seems like an endless amount of chlorine, and a vent that keeps spitting our more, så maybe I could transfer the heat to that and then vent it into space... 2 minutes ago, Nostas said: pw from bathroom and showers > aquatuner I'm not sure what you're trying to say. I guess I can use an aquatuner - I don't know why I would have to use water from the toilets and showers. Problem is the aquatuner just moves the heat to somewhere else. But I guess I got enough room to just seal off a huge area and heat that up. Coolthulhu
Produce less heat first. Once you do that, the cooling from sieving and desalination will be enough for hundreds of cycles. Also, don't bother with heat that isn't actually harmful. Dupes feel comfy in pleasantly chilly 60C, it's only plants that have problems with freshly electrolyzed oxygen. Nightinggale
Heat up salt water. The output from the desalinator is always 40 C (or was it 30). End game solution is steam turbines combined with aquatuners. The real question is what to do prior to being able to set that up. suicide commando
Try setting up some ice machines, make ice, then autosweep it and run it along a rail through a large body of water, when it gets to the end it will have melted and cooled down the water somewhat. Then you can use other loops to 'deposit' heat into this cooled water which they absorb from places that need cooling. suicide commando
The ice machine itself is net heat negative afaik. it produces 16k DTU/s, but that's while it's cooling down watero -20 degrees. I'm pretty sure that the amount of heat removed from the cooling water is more than the heat output of the machine. Once it has finished making ice it drops it in front of it, and you can use an autosweeper to pick it up and send it along a rail through a body of water, because of the small size of the packets ( 20kg ) it will melt quite rapidly, so the ore dropper at the end rarely ever drops the ice. This will cool down this body of water ( from which you also draw the water to make ice ). Once this water is nice and cool, you can then use it to cool your base. metallichydra
the solution to solving heat problems (without magic heat deletion machines) seem to be: survive untill endgame, generating very little heat, by avoiding heating stuff with buildings. for example, use smooth hatches instead of metal refinery when you reach lategame / get to space / get steam engine, you can begin deleting heat without magic machines (venting into space, steam turbine, maybe ice machine) Just now, suicide commando said: The ice machine itself is net heat negative afaik. it produces 16k DTU/s, but that's while it's cooling down watero -20 degrees. Great. I'll just roast in my own self-imposed hell instead, thank you very much... There are a large number of alternatives besides "just roasting" or "heat disappearing magic." Although the game is designed to use some of the "magic," you can cool your base without it. Here's what you can do: Produce less heat within your main base. Buildings that produce consistent heat, such as the super computer, grill, or generators, should be built to the side or above your base. Using an ice maker (off to the side, because it produces lots of heat) and strategically placed ice-e fans can help a lot until you can get some aquatuners set up. Aquatuners are great at moving heat around, so use them to move the heat where you want it. As you develop your base, eventually you can use the heat to do things like run steam turbines or boil petroleum. If you have algae, use algae terrariums and air purifiers to produce your oxygen. If you let the clay build up from the air purifiers, it will cool the air going into your base to about 24c which can be very useful. Use insulated tiles to wall hot things off from your base. This works great at the edges of hot biomes, or under your base. However, avoid using insulation at the top of your base -- it'll just trap the heat. Thanks, I have never been able to get far enough into the game to explore steam turbines. Seems like they're the way to go once I get to that point. I do insulate my main base, and try to do some air conditioning. I'll probably figure out some solutions. Darkin Coaled
if you're lucky there's also cool slush geysers. chilly -10 degrees polluted water, average output is several liters per cycle. I don't know if this sits well with you but if you can afford to feed a wheezewort (yes, it works by magic) then you can plant one next to a natural gas generator, the output polluted water and co2 are at the same temperature as the machine that produced them. seal it all in hydrogen and make sure it don't get too cold so you get polluted ice instead. probably works for petrol generator as well, but you would need two wheezers. suicide commando
I don't recommend using ice-e fans, as they don't provide as much cooling as that the ice being used in it would provide if it is allowed to melt normally. Ice makers + ice fans together is actually not heat negate, but only moves the heat around. Using the melting process of ice is far more efficient for cooling. Just make sure that the ice doesn't stack up in large armounts, and it will melt rapidly ( with the technique I mentioned above for instance ). Steam turbines can be tricky, as the heat you need to run them effectively means that you'll need steel aquatuners (or some sort of heat source such as a volcano). You can run them closed-loop, piping the condensed water back under the turbine to turn into steam again -- but you'll need a LOT of heat. I'm also okay with the ice machines deleting some heat, my main problem seems to be with something that feels like an exploit (the water sieve cooling loop I keep running into just feels wrong to me). I don't think I'll use this trick either, but there does seem to be a lot of options now I realize the steam turbine can turn the heat into electricity via the aquatuners (if I understood that correctly). Those machines have fixed output, whether you like it or not. If you're not using this as an advantage, then it will turn against you. With the sieve for example, if you input 60°C pW, you're using this feature at your advantage. If you input pW at 20°C then this feature will go against you. If you want to be clean with this feature, making it as flat as you apparently wish, you should input 40°C pW. Then good luck for t° management, and moreover, for all other machines using fixed output.
