Easy Crude - petroleum design?

in my current map, i have a volcano. I've already vacuum-closed it but have no idea how to get a petroleum cooker going.

With the recent changes to temp sensors and pipe temp sensors, anyone has any easy to build deisgns? doesn't has to have a high throughput, anything above 2.5kg/s is more than enough.

pretty easy.  Put a door between metal tiles on either side with one side touching the magma.  Tie that to temp sensor to open doors when you reach petroleum temps.  Pump in crude and pump out petroleum.  You could use an overflow divide between the crude inlet and the petroleum pump.  The door will cycle as needed; when open it creates a vacuum so no heat transfer.  When closed, it conducts the heat to the crude oil.  Feel free to aid a petroleum sensor to make it fool proof.

Problem is that without space age materials a pump immersed in 400 degree petrol will definitely overheat. With thermium it's easy, but without thermium... you'd need to include a second stage where you cool the petroleum down to actually safe pumping levels (you'll probably want to use radiant piping filled with petroleum to dump the excess heat into a steam turbine). That should get it safe enough for steel. Then you can flush the petroleum into a third chamber (where you actually pump it out to be used).

The other thing is to have a robo miner to mine out igneous rock when it solidifies. As long as.you make sure to keep the miner in vacuum (and cool it with tempshift plates) you should be fine.

 

EDIT: Also, use diamond tiles for heat transfer; only tungsten or better can actually survive volcano temperatures IIRC.

well, yah, I guess I assumed that part.  You need to get to 400C

Unless something changed in the last update, tempshift plates in a vacuum doesn't effect miners, the robo-miner will eventually overheat

Fairly certain this is still true.  You need to have liquid or gas pass over it (and no, being in a pipe/duct isn't enough) to cool it.

refinery only converts 50% and required dupe interaction so there is always down time

by boiling it yourself you get a full 100% conversion and no down time

Boiling crude oil to petroleum gives a 100% conversion ratio.

But using the refinery, you can delete heat if you pipe very hot oil. It's nice to cool some magma or whatever very hot you want.

Boiling oil to petrol gives 100% conversion. With the refinery some of the excess is wasted, and you have to deal with the natural gas that's vented. On the other hand, the heat deletion is very useful.

 

Depending on what you want the petroleum for, though, you're potentially better off going all the way and making a sour gas boiler/condenser, especially if you have access to thermium/niobium pumps (which you need for 400C petroleum), since natural gas is far better as a power source. Of course petroleum has all sorts of uses as a coolant and ingredient in molecular forge recipes, as well as rocket fuel.

For inspiration, here is my version of crude oil->petroleum "rafinery". Powered by magma from Volcano, crude oil "injection" controlled by temp sensor (starts over 400°C), rafined petroleum cooled with crude oil (preheating)... Its not perfect, but it works & created without debug mode (except viscogel barier).

This actually gives me an idea to finish my system.

My issue was I can get the boiler working but it was near impossible to balance oil production to match the heat production of the volcano (without destroying excess petro). Using a second output for a steam generator to keep it below lava temps should work...
