Shove Vole die-off

Recommended Posts

This is current preview.

Today, I let the game run cycle 370 -> 500 while at work, and in the evening all Shove Voles seem to be dead. I had at least 5 before. However, I have no idea what killed them. Temperatures are in the -100...50C range, perfectly fine. Full bunker-tile cover is in place. None were confined, they all had plenty of space. One was in the Gravitas facility with a 3 tile tunnel below, so it could not get out.

Does anybody have any idea what might have killed them?

Full bunker-tile cover is in place. = Probably no more food. They eat a lot.

I've had this happen to me as well...Might be worth it to get a bunker door or two up or bunker tile a section just above the surface / at ground level so they can still get at it.

Probably old age ;)

You need to mine some regolith and maffic rock - I bet you will find some buried eggs. It happened to me - I thought that they all had died, but then after some time I dig up eggs and also some new ones were born and I had to catch them all and put into closed space to save my FPS ;)

So buried eggs do not hatch? Anyways, I will look. Thanks.

Update: Yes, that was it. Apparently, they buried their own eggs or did lay them in regolith and the eggs seem to stop incubating when buried. I just dug up two at 0% incubation that are perfectly viable now.

I'm not sure about it. Seems like they hatch, but it takes very long time. When I found that one single egg I managed to ranch some more voles from it. They all became tame of course. It was like 600 cycles ago. Now only have one tame left, but during this 600 cycles some more wild have showed up. So they must have been hatched from buried eggs, which I haven't found. Now I have 5 wild and one tame.

Klei may have some timer in here that eventually wakes them up even if buried. All that I did dig out so far (not a lot) came out at 0% and immediately started to incubate.

hmkay ^^
Any critter die off could be triggered by "stuck in place"(my experience ;)), had that with fish and slicksters, perhaps same problem.

Yeah, that's been super annoying.  Though it seems the latest test branch update may have fixed that issue.

I wonder if that is what decimated my generous (3x3) pool of the thousand Pacu. I thought I could just kidnap all wild eggs into (unpowered) Incubators and for sure the delivery to the pool was alright but somehow the number of eggs was very low (but not null) and I ended up with maybe 3 Pacu (when it could have very well been 30). I did not feed them, the water was 40°C and no Gulp Fish had been there Some times there were also several eggs in there.

I've had some shove voles inside a 1x1 box for 2000 cycles. If they can starve, that's news to me.

Interesting...I've never paid attention to them all that much. Also haven't paid attention to whether any wild critters can starve...opposed to tame ones.

They still lay eggs yes.

The only time i've seen a wild critter die off is when a Pacu lays a Gulp fish egg and the resulting Gulp fish dies from temperature. All the others can't starve when wild.

They cannot starve, but they could become unhappy and stop reproducing. That is the real question. I just put a Drecko into 1x1 to see what happens.

The Pacu temperature-problem applies to Slicksters as well, BTW.

I don`t think Shove Voles can get unhappy in space. They shouldn`t get entombed and the entire space biome counts as a room for them. Only way to get them cramped or overcrowded would be to contain them in a metal room.

In the live build the Voles are pretty buggy and often get stuck walking up a wall. Meteors can hit them and push them into tiles which makes them stuck. They can get damaged by meteors but it`s unlikely for them to die from it (meteors do like 2-7 damage) it takes a lot of hits to kill one.
