Killing Germs

So I figured out that if you immerse a polluted water tank in chlorine gas, it kills off all the germs in the water.  (Cool!).

So I tried to set up a system to automatically remove germs and failed, miserably!

The problem my small brain can't overcome is that even though the water in the tank gets sterilized, water that's in the pipes exiting or entering the tank do not -- it only works for water that's in the tank.  So all my automation attempts, which use a system of germ detectors on pipes and shut-off valves have so far failed.  Either the germs in the pipes infect where it's going and multiply, or the sensor just never allows water to pass.

Anyone know what I'm talking about.

Have any of the big brains on this forum figured this out?

Yes i have in my previous game an automated water treatment.. I think i post the schematics somewhere. IF not when i am at home i will make you some print screen.

Here in this post i put my killing germ, water cleaner setup whit schematics, whit no dupe interaction. Enjoy it. 

 

I recently heard of a very useful trick to combat this. Put an electric door underneath the liquid tank and hook it up to your automation.

When that door is open, the water tank will not 'function' so it won't let any water out, however, you can still pump water into it.
Use this as your 'shutoff valve' and you won't have any germy water left in your pipes.

thanks for the tip, I can upgrade my septic system design with this ;)

Mine is whit one liquid reservoir and worked like a charm for 700 cycle (from the moment i build it till i finish my game) , neotuck design is for industrial use (plants, electrolizers, etc) thank you suicide commando for the trick. I will use it in my current base when i will build my water treatment facility.

My Current map has one.. and I totally forgot about the food poisoning in there.. so I build my pH2O resevoir right underneath it, and sent my slush geysers into it as well, I now have a VERY large and VERY germy fish tank.

And I thought I was so clever by sending all my germy water from my toilets and sinks into my reed fiber farm....

Not Slush.  Infected.  Both produce Polluted Water, but the Infected one is markedly warmer (30 C) and is full of Food Poisoning.

It seems that Slush Geysers have a lower probability of spawning compared to other Geyser/Vent/Volcano features.

I've only been playing the game little while, but I managed to make a very simple disinfection loop for bathrooms. It doesn't work for large volumes and cannot deal with continuous PW input, but I've had it for 600+ cycles and no germs have got through from my bathroom (14 dupes, x4 shower/lavatory/sink).

Polluted water comes in from the right. Reservoir is below. Germ sensor set to Below 1. Mostly uses hot water from a geyser, but cool water doesn't seem to affect it's performance.

and if you have less PW then the amount it takes to fill the looping pipe then the PW doesn't stay in the reservoir long enough to be disinfected.

There are two options:

1)  add a valve at the output to lower the packet of water that loops, it will slow down the flow rate but speed up the disinfection.  You would have to find a balance that works for you

2) add shutoff valves to stop flow from reservoir to allow the PW to sit still in the reservoir.  This will disinfect PW the fastest but will require some creative automation curcuits 

Another option is to use this system to disinfect germy clean water after using a sieve

The Pro:

Clean water disinfects faster than PW

The Con: 

Polluted dirt dropped from the sieve will have germs

I encountered your same problem when I tried to make the build more efficient. That happens if the return loop has priority. In that situation, once the loop is full, it just goes round and round without disinfecting, and backs-up the incoming PW and stuffs up the bathrooms.

In my build, the input line from the bathroom has priority. No disinfection occurs if the loop is not full; but when the loop is full of 10kg packets, and some PW comes in from the bathroom, the loop is held up, and the incoming PW fills the reservoir above 0kg, and the disinfection begins :)

I did have concerns that germ-y water may get past the germ-detecting valve when the loop is full, but I've watched the loop run for many cycles, and it didn't seem to matter if the return loop was held up. Can't explain why, but like I said, 600+ cycles and I've yet to have germs escape.

I use a modified version of Neotuck's setup.  Only difference is that I rearranged it a bit to make the room smaller and added a germ sensor on the way out to overcome the issue with filters/buffers resetting when a game is loaded.  It's been working for hundreds of cycles without a single germ getting through.  The non-insulated pipe on the left is a secondary input with a polluted water filter.

One thing I'm trying to figure out is what purpose you are using that much purified water for?

Once you've isolated your food storages in chlorine and stopped making liceloaf/mushbars, water that is polluted with germs is almost completely irrelevant. All the mid to end game sinks for water (electrolysis, disposable coolant, steam, oil reservoir, rockets, hydroponics) are completely immune to germs.

Am I missing a large part of gameplay that needs germ-free water?

I'll test and see if they are affected by food poisoning in a bit, I happen to have an easily accessible lavatory overflow that I'll feed directly to my espressos. Both of those only require tiny amounts of water per day, compared to the output of an infected water geyser.

I have a feeling that it doesn't, because making coffee boils water, but this is ONI, not reality.

Yeah other than water coolers and espresso machines, not much reason.  I just set it up because I don't like having food poisoning everywhere (I run a closed loop bathroom setup).  The overpressure tank above is at around 135k per tile and the only thing that tank is currently supplying is aquatuner cooling in space where I'm venting the steam so germs wouldn't even matter.

Main reason I like to make Berry sludge late game is because I don't have to worry about storage

Berry sludge recipe doesn't require water, and germs are deleted when fed to hydroponics, unless I'm mistaken?
