Solar energy builds on the surface

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if any one had tried new solar power plants with the new robo-miners to remove the regolith left over from meteor showers

Here is my fist attempt done in debug mode

The mech doors under the scanners open for 10 seconds after the bunker doors open to allow any regolith to fall though

the robo-miners overlap so if they get buried by regolith it's neighbor can dig it out

---------UPDATE---------

I have added a layer of tempshift plates above the window tiles and lowered the sweepers/loaders

This might not seem useful because we are dealing with a vacuum so even with cold tempshift plates they can't transfer heat from the miners, sweepers, and loaders.

However when they get covered in Regolith when the bunker doors open the regolith becomes a thermal medium between the temp shift plates and the miners, sweepers, and loaders.

This works so well they can be made of Steel instead of Thermium

And about your design - it's defently has a big flaw. I think miners, sweepers and may be loaders will overheat over time. Or am I missing something?

I built them with Thermium, the regolith keeps them from going over 300C

In theory anyways I have only been running for 50 cycles and no problems so far

Well, I like it. But  if i understand correctly, you need some external cooling if you use steel. Regolith spawns like 280-290C, doesn't it? So how much? Or does it sweep so fast that not to much heat transfer going on? What is the temperature of collected regolith?

I have just been using wheezies under my solar panels and battery bank

I know this seems like more than the map provides but remember you can get extra wheezie seeds from space missions

Batteries do, and so does the regolith

yes, it speeds up the heat transfer

diamond or gold makes good material for shift plates

mind showing the automation please? or even better, upload the save file

It's not about solar panels, it's about sweepers, collectors, miners - they do generate heat and they do overheat. And it's kinda tricky to cool them in vacuum, because they don't transfer heat with tiles they sit on.

Much less optimized, but works nicely. Cooling for the miner is by the sewage from bathrooms and showers. I do combine scanners and solar though. Currently I have only one scanner/solar panel per miner, could probably be increased to two. Vertical distance is so that the solar panel does not decrease scanner sensitivity.

This is the only automation used to control the bunkers and mech doors under the scanners, this pics are a step by step of what happens after a meteor shower

All the fallen regolith and iron get mined, swept, and loaded onto comvayor rails to be sorted.  Iron is stored and regolith is fed to my wild shove vole farm

I am not playing the game atm so I cannot test. But I though you could install robo miners upside down.

I have been planning (when I start playing again) on putting robo miners beneath the doors of scanners, so they won't get entombed.

you can so yes this is possible, feel free to share a pic when you finish

But how you would cool them? In vacuum they don't transfer heat with tiles they are sitting on. They don't heat up fast, but surely they do.

this is also true, scanners and doors don't generate heat so they only get as hot as the regolith that comes into contact with them

robo-miners on the other hand generate heat and with no out lite for that heat they eventually overheat

I found a really  weird solution to that. My robominers kept the bottom of my steam rocket clean of regolith but kept overheating. Once i made them from steel the steam from the exhaust was actually cooling them below the overheat point.

I`m thinking of dumping extra steam from my steam generation cave to cool other surface stuff. For now i throw away the CO2 that dupes produce with their jetpacks delivering hot regolith to the cave. I`s also cool enough for steel buildings on the surface.

Another thing you may try is pumping CO² into a "bassin" build with back-plates or temp-shifts. CO² falls to the ground, so you can have it open at the top. That way, you can transfer heat away, and even cool down regolith, if you can get rid of the heat somewhere else.

CO2 only "falls" to the ground when in contact with a lighter gas

if it's by itself then it behaves just like any other gas
