Digging Ice/Polluted ice...?

Recommended Posts

I am still not sure how to separate the clean/polluted ice in the cold biome. I started digging and sorting in containers, but that ½ pure loss has me wondering ... should i melt everything into P.water, use it as a heat sink and then purify? I mean water is pretty precious in this world, even dirty.

If it is a 100% ratio I would just slap a filter in, sure its 120W but that way your getting the most out of any water that drops.

There is a thread with some kind of mechanical filter that uses gravity. The different liquids take different positions and filter themselves by gravity so to say. I will try to find it...it was about 6months ago should still work.

Yes. Probably best efficiency to melt then use it as heatsink

EDIT. The idea is old. Idk who came up with it. I couldn't find the thread but I found it on Google and made a pic.

To separate the liquids mechanically

There is a video on YouTube by brogar.(I took the pic from him) Please watch if the picture is not enough self explanatory.

You don't need all those vents anymore. This pic was made before pitcher pumps and water tap.

Basically you put ph2o on one side water on the other side. The vent that comes from the molten biome comes in the middle and é voila no need for a filter.

Cheers

now all you need to do to have storage of solid ice without mass loss is melt it and drip it on a cold floor with auto sweepers  to gather it before it blocks

Are you talking about this thread I made a while back?

I did a little bit of testing and with the new element displacement system it may or may not still work in this patch. It'll probably depend on how much mass you try to filter at once.

Thx! Sweet! Exactly! 27th October...funny how time flies, he?

That's interesting! Well I mean as long a it works at all...But keep in mind there is a difference between your build an the one above

Yours is 100% mechanical. NO POWER! Kudos for that! Very nice!

The other one needs a pump. But should maintain 10kg/s if I'm not mistaking. Can't check for myself atm.

... will return only ½ of the amount? Will heating it and letting it melt actually return the full 100% of the ice "ore" ? This seems like a lot of wasted water, especially unpolluted ice.

Will the same work for other materials - melting is better than digging?

digging bleach stone also returns half of it

make a shutoff and a pipe sensor and you have filter for 10W

In that case, the efficient approach to exploring the map should be

  1. Get something with VERY high temperatures(lava or some liquid heated in lava)
  2. Transport (1) with our favorite abyssalite pipes to a place that we want to explore.
  3. Cover our new paradise with (1) until it's SCORCHED EARTH :D
  4. Gather molten resources in their full amount and use molten ... or....
  5. Get something with VERY low temperature and heat (3) until it's cooled to a manageable temperature (~ 50°?).
    • I am still not sure how you can achieve that, though ... maybe use the AETN / Aquatuners + Petroleum / Crude oil(low freezing temp. + high evaporation temp. + high Thermal conductivity + high Spec. Heat capacity)

That's very theoretical, of course. I am still trying to survive early game with max possible dupes (30+ up to cycle 100 currently), so being resource efficient tends to pay off. I am not using any lavatories, just a SPOM or 2 and some refined metal to keep the logic gates running. At least for now I have tons of food, did almost all research(actually I was done at around cycle 60 I don't need the last 5-6 things yet anyways). At least food is not a problem - with enough water around I have nearly 1mln calories ... should last for a few "stress winters".

Anyways, thanks for the info, this will definitely be useful when fighting draughts. I plan to slowly melt at least ice + pol water - Water alone can provide O2 + energy + food.
