Five Years of Don’t Starve

Recommended Posts

A game that came out on April 23, 2013, the Don’t Starve community has stuck around for five years and has grown a lot over time, which brings up the question...Where’s the celebration? It seems disappointing that Klei hadn’t planned out anything for such a major milestone for any gaming development to have their game be around for a total of five years and continue to grow. Klei hasn’t really been interested in the Don’t Starve community and the game as they use to be. Don’t get me wrong, I know they’re busy with things like Hamlet, Oxygen Not Included, Hot Lava, and what not, but with recent events like the debates of broken characters and Klei’s acknowledgement towards A LOT of bugs regarding visual aspects of the game, not much love has been put into Don’t Starve Together since the end of Forge, and even then before that, it felt like some of the things Klei tried to make weren’t as special as we had, or at least I, hoped for. Weird and awful mechanics such as disease is strange, and the question of broken characters brings up the problem on whether or not Klei truly wishes to focus more on this game compared to other games, such as a statement on one forum post relating towards Klei’s effort and simply having them respond with a half-hearted comment on how they’ll look into these issues and how ‘modding’ would solve the issues. That’s not taking an effort to fix your game, that’s having other people do your work for free as everyone suffers while the ‘meta’ continues to be loved. Five years, everyone. Five years to lead up to this? On a good note towards everything, Klei has made some smart decisions, even if they’re not quite big, such as the in-game storefront being a factor to purchase skins, rather than obtaining them from the market by handing over 20$ for one skin. There still is a lot of issues that need solved, but taking it one step at a time and not worrying about your pride over helping change a game to be better than ever for EVERYONE instead of a meta aspect would be a nice change of pace.

Knowing that most updates come out on thursdays and that big event #2 is coming soon (whatever soon means), it wouldn't be unlikely if Klei waited till Thursday with a celebration update/announcement, if they planned any. They might as well connect it then with the next big event too. Who knows?

... or they just simply don't want to celebrate, because they have some better ideas and other stuff to do?...

THAT, is adorable as hell.  :D  Much better than what I was gonna suggest--that everybody just go into their individual worlds and show screenshots of their characters dancing, cheering--some celebratory-looking gesture/animation--and/or draw out the number "5" in something on the ground, such as rocks or flowers.  Heh.

Then--light bulb!--we cut out just the dancing-character parts of every screenshot, and paste them all together into a big fat collage!  And maybe put something like "5 YEARS OF NOT STARVING" or something cleverer than that, on top of the collage in big white letters, in the game's font.

As for the DEVS doing something to mark the anniversary...I dunno, that's up to them.  : P

...Notorious

Hard to believe it's still kicking after all this time, but I'm excited to see what comes out in the future!

Well, maybe a five year event should be for DS and not DST ?

You have a good point, but the only version of the game with a system in place for events is DST.

I'm not a big fan of disease either, especially since there's no visual warning. The only warning you get is if you inspect every single plant and check what your character says. A way to cure or prevent disease, or a better disease warning, or just removing disease from the default world entirely would be a welcome 5th year anniversary treat.

Another thing that'd be great to release on the 5th year anniversary is ...boats...

Definitely would be nice if on the anniversary, Winona suddenly realized how to apply duct tape to armor. As-is she's just another noob trap.

Or Abigail figured out how to run away at low HP.

...or Maxwell's shadow loggers stopped chopping baby and dead trees.

Mods ahoy!

I'd settle for anything really. I'd be fine with just a simple twig. At least then it would be some kind of acknowledgment. Having a game with a community going this strong after 5 years seems like quite the accomplishment. It's kind of a shame that there's just nothing.

Exactly.
