I need some tips...

So, I've been playing Don't Starve for a couple of years now and have always played as Wilson, ever since the Single Player era. Never cared too much about other characters, until now. So I decided to try one of the OP characters and am currently on a run with WX-78. I know one of his best perks is the Overcharge thingy he gets when a lighting hits him, and that he works best with Wicker,  but what about those who don't have a Wickerbuddy?

What are my options to activate the Overcharged mode? I know there is an item that casts lighting when used. Sadly my computer can't run multiple servers, so I can't play with caverns. Also, that item is just too expensive to craft it solely for Overcharged purposes. Are there any other reliable sources of getting WX electrocuted?

I always use this way to get WX-78 to overcharge I either turn lightning on more or when someone dies you can lead them to a touchstone and be touching the touchstone with they revive and then the touchstone will create lightning on it and it will hit you. I have never tried this out but I think if you get lightning to hit a lightning rod and you touch it you get overcharged but beware when you do get hit by lightning you lose some sanity I recommend eating around 15 gears and getting your sanity up before you try overcharging yourself. I hope this comment helps!

It's good that you've decided to play with other characters, it's like a completely different strategy

As to answer your question, WX-78 will overcharge from lightning after..

-A touchstone resurrection

-Using the Telelocator Staff (possible without caves, but hard to get)

-Damaging an Ancient Pseudo-Science Station (not possible without caves)

-Fighting Moslings

Getting overcharge solo is tricky, but WX-78 can still devour gears like a mofo. Especially when playing alone, you can eat all 15 gears, and get super tricked out on health, sanity, and hunger. Plus since gears give crazy healing, hunger and sanity, you can rush the Ruins without too much trouble. You'll have to defeat the Fuelweaver to satisfy your insatiable craving for gears, but otherwise WX-78's great.

Even with Wickerbottom around, have you seen the cost of that book? A red gem! Those don't exactly grow on trees! You might find one in graves, but otherwise you could be stuck waiting all the way until summer for the fire hounds. Even then, it's a rare drop. I mean, red gems are commonplace as far as gems go, but it's just something to consider. You typically can't just whip out the lightning on day 1.

Since everyone kinda gave you tips for overcharge here's some other tips for WX:

  1.  don't be afraid of rain. it's very little damage that can be healed easily through food you cook.
  2.  don't eat gears before you know how much you will need for your base. you don't want to be frantically searching the desert for some before summer hits or something
  3.  base in the dragonfly desert. it's a fun and resourceful place to base in general, but you will practically have gears being delivered to you constantly.
  4.  WX is a huge tank when fully powered up. 400 HP is no joke, and tanking can sometimes be more viable than kiting because you can dish out more damage with less risk.
  5.  Don't forget the spoiled food perk. it may seem like a lesser perk compared to his others but it is super handy.
  6.  You might want to use an umbrella + football helmet combo instead of the eyebrella so you can still be affected by lightning.
