FYI prevent exo suit from melting!

Recommended Posts

So I just had my researchers exo suit turn into a block of sand from analysis an active geyser, this one was molten gold, so it was over 1500C at times when erupting.

diden't know the suit could melt, must be part of the update, as I had my dups running in lava before no issues.

Well...dupes can't melt

So...I guess that's a plus(?)

the sand might have been from something else melting, as i noticed I think it was granite ladders melting into sand as well in there.

so it was either the suit turning into sand the 1st time, or some dup brought in exactly 100kgs of granite and dropped it on the same spot as the dup was researching.

was odd to see him almost die from scalding then i noticed hey hes not in a suit. heh.

Well, hes in a new suit back at it. gonna lock him in to see if the suit indeed melts now, if it doesnt i have no clue how I lost his other one, cause when i clicked on him, to see if the un-equip suit button was there, it was not, and I know he was wearing one at the time in question cause i locked him into the room that time to, to keep him on task. big base and i just last cycle got my 6th dup, so I need to lock them in areas to have them focus on tasks or else its so random.

Thats how I know blocks dident melt, unless it was the debris which I thought i had cleared.

I am trying to have my other raw metal sit in the molten gold before it hardens to see if I can get free refining out of it lol.

so I am using insulated aby tiles to keep ALL the heat in.

Catalina is very happy, because she can melt!

Dupes actually can't melt.
It causes the game to crash, since they're (essentially) continuously melting into their selves.

Spoiler

And now you know.

Just so you know - you're not going crazy :

Happened to me a few nights ago - in my case Otto decided to go for a swim in magma (another dupe dug the floor out from underneath him...). I was working within a vacuum and the only materials nearby were abyssalite.

Short version - Suits melt :D

When an exo suit melts they turn to sand, and this has been the case before this update, when you drop a dupe in lava thats when you know its all going downhill.

Also nothing wrong with an exosuit melting? what it melts into is bizarre though.... I mean your dupes shouldnt be immune to everything just cuz of a suit.

I would think that in line with ongoing efforts to reduce micromanagement, devs could make scientists interrupt the analysis and take cover while the geyser/fumarole/volcano is erupting instead of continuing the research. I'm not even sure how to do that with present in-game tools except watching him all the time and move him to safe distance during eruptions.

Perhaps the analysis could be done differently. Player would have to enclose the geyser/volcano/fumarole in a room with certain maximum size, e.g. 96 tiles. The room would have to contain a geyser/fumarole/volcano and a "science outpost" building. That would render the room a "research area" with effect that it allows analysis of the volcano. The assigned scientist would just go to the volcano to pick samples, most of the time would be spent in the outpost building, doing the analysis. When analysis of the sample is done, the scientist could apply the result on the volcano to increase its analysis progress and pick another sample. That would mean the scientist is still tied to the volcano but he could be at safe distance most of the time and the player can prevent him going there during the eruption.

I'd like them to make it so that you could attach automation to it to disable the ability to do analysis if the temperature spikes. Though that would mean that you would probably have to build something onto the volcano, it would probably require power, and you have to worry about all this stuff melting. Maybe just some custom options on them similar to "enabling auto-bottling" for "allow research during eruption."

Can you automate doors locking/unlocking? If so, you could simple stick a temp sensor in there and prevent entry above a certain temp. It seems this would have a broad array other other applications too.

The problem is that the scientist stays right at the volcano all through the analysis. You can't get him away by locking a door since he's already there.
