Is the insulated gas pipe cost correct?

Multiply the specific heat capacity of the element with the mass of the pipe and compare with the other pipe if you are really curious.
 

Abyssalite doesn't transfer heat, is the thing, so using it for ordinary Tile, Liquid Pipe and Gas Pipe is better insulation than using other materials with the "Insulated" versions of those things.

I'd argue that's a design problem. As for a solution, it's hard to say. I've got my ideas, of course.

I don't build with abyssalite because it's game-breakingly strong, effectively trivializing most of the interesting thermal challenges within the game.

It's a matter of preference, really.

I'm avoiding using abyssalite because of what @Vim Razz said. ;)

That sounds fun in a way. But do you also build extremely hot/cold systems like this? Liquid oxgen production, natural gas production etc.

I mean in the end it is just a matter of using more space for tile insulation and less distance for pipes or more pumps to account for state changes right?

I haven't done either of those things, tbh.

It gets a little messier than that.  No amount of insulation even comes close to separating temperature regions the way that abyssalite does, so you generally need active temp management or climate control systems as well, and with that added complexity comes added crisis.

does seem the abyssalite should probably be 1/10th as powerful or so to encourage use of insulated tiles and such.  I just build insulated abyssalite stuff for a clear visual on where I have real insulation.  The waste of materials and the negative decor aren't really a big deal.  Though this material colors mod sounds interesting...

I'am only really using abyssalite for those really hot and cold systems. I assume that they become too big and possibly quite unstable if you don't, except if you take like 100 cycles to prime them. For example the liquid oxygen pipes could easily break w/o abyssalite since liquid oxygen has such a narrow state temperature. The natural gas production could be almost impossible to make at all without a massive amount of diamond and a huge buffer between the hot (500C) and cold (anything below overheat temp <100'ish C) area.

For tiles I use the insulated abyssal version despite it not having a technical effect but it just looks wrong to use normal tiles and I like doing stuff that looks/feels right, since the game is made with that in mind. It is all about how things feel, the devs have did a good job with that.

For the rest of the base It is often not required to use abyssalite as long as the parts are arranged in a way so the heat and cold play nicely with eachother. For buildings/systems that are not in extreme ranges I often use insulated rocks.

It is then just a matter of mass and flow. For example having a relatively large cold water tank with a lot of mass in it (tempshift plates etc.) adds quite some stability to everything. My cold tank is currently hovering around 17 and 19C and it isn't completely insulated. I use it to cool down batteries, pump it into lavatories etc to keep my dupe building cool. Also 17-19C is a nice temperature to use through an aquatuner since it comes out in the range that is usable for wheat (<5C and >freezing)

I use insulated pipes and tiles on things that aren't important enough to craft out of abyssalite. My entire base is enclosed in a ring of sandstone insulated tiles. I plan on running a vacuum insulation eventually, but this was a nice stop gap to get the 40* temps from my hostile nearby biomes away. I don't have enough abyssalite to do even 1/4 of the wall.

I'm feeding my geyser water through insulated pipes to my electrolyzer, then running the gasses from the pumps in that room via insulated pipes to a thermo regulator to bring down my O2 temps. Also running the hydrogen in insulated pipes to stop it from heating up my base.
