Question about Darkness

Welcome :). You must have been too far from the light. Your character will comment on hearing something. Run for the light then. Hope it helps!

Yea maybe. As I remember it: we ran instantlynto the fire. Then the hands came and took us.

What should we do if we hear that sound? Run to the fire? Lit a torch?

Thanks for answers!

Charlie/Darkness will attack you if you are in total darkness. Your charakter will warn you about it for example Wendy" "The darkness has swallowed me.". If you stay in the darkness you'll hear a sort of hissing fwoosh, then you have about 2-4 seconds before you get attacked. Sometimes when you are on the edge of the light source you can still be considerated as in darkness even if you can see your character. You can awoid being attacked by simply staing in the enlightened area. It doesn't matter if it's torch, campfire, burning tree as long as your charackter does not warn you about being in darkness you are safe. Sorry about bad english

I think you're confused. Charlie's hand and Charlie's own attack are separate things. If you are in complete darkness for too long, a hissing sound will be heard and you will be attacked by Charlie. The hand simply spawns randomly around a fire and reaches towards it to extinguish the fire, but the hand cannot hurt or move a player, but can be chased back to despawn it(hence why people try to chase it into the dark, not the hand pulling them into darkness).

Perhaps you were a second too late running into the light and were killed by Charlie and mistook your death for a hand that spawned at the same time.

PS: to prevent death by Charlie, run to a campfire before complete darkness, or ensure you can make a campfire or torch which will ensure your safety. Worst case scenario the night isn't over when you only have a torch, set a tree on fire. Night vision such as moggles or being a Werebeaver will also render you invulnerable to Charlie.

The hands that come and take fuel away from the fire aren't in themselves dangerous -- nor are they Charlie (we think).  The hands can be chased away by a player, and if you chase them far enough into the darkness they will disappear (bring a torch, or run back fast).

The danger in the hands is that they can put out a fire -- leaving you in Darkness -- which means you are prey for ...

(so, yeah, always keep a torch in hand, even around a campfire, and if your fire goes out get that torch going real quick)

Shadow hands steal fire. It is possible your fire was snuffed and then Charlie came. You should have still been able to hear her fwoosh after a bit. It's not instantaneous.

Similarly it is possible to see a campfire yet be considered in the darkness if standing on the edge of the light radius. Yoj can tell if the sanity meter suddenly starts plummeting down.

When you hear Charlie, have a light source of any sort. A torch will do, a lantern will, a minerhat. Any campfire. Fully heated thermal stones and charged lightning rods glow enough tok. If you're low on kindling, equipping and unequipping your torch or lantern will work. You will lose sanity though. Camping by a cluster of trees that can be burnt safely is a good way to save materials and get charcoal for crockpots and drying racks. You wait until darkness settles in, then equip a torch or a lighter, set one tree on fire and unequip the torch/lighter to save its fuel.

It's always sounded to me somewhat like a big, deep cat hiss.  Which is actually kind of a bit creepier, 'cos it's less human...

Anyway yeah.  Don't get caught in total darkness for more than a couple seconds, and ALWAYS.  HAVE.  A LIGHT SOURCE READY.  I mean it.  _Always_.  This is not an optional in this game, it's a necessity.

Actually you know what else this reminds me of?  (Besides the obvious "It is pitch black.  You are likely to be eaten by a grue.")  Shadowgate!  Anybody else played that?  It had this mechanic where darkness instantly = death.  Like, the very SECOND your torch went all the way out, you would "trip over something" and BANG, dead.  It got to where after a while, the torch-going-out music would haunt your nightmares.  You know the Sonic drowning music?  Yeah, it's on THAT level of fingernails-down-the-chalkboard-of-your-nerves.

IT'S A SAD THING THAT YOUR ADVENTURE HAS ENDED HERE...

Yup, totally this.  I hear it as a hiss as well.  The Grue is a pretty nasty customer, even after Queen Charlie.

I can't agree with "always have a light-source handy" strongly enough.  I never don't fill my fifth inventory space with a torch -- and later a lantern.  I go a bit further in paranoia and generally my fourth slot to contain a second light-source as well -- usually light-bulbs I can drop, but a miner's hat or a torch for burning stuff will do later on.

Light is so important that the first thing I make, always, every time, as soon as possible, is a torch.  In fact as soon as I have three twigs and three grass I make that torch.  (three because I place my resources in specific inventory slots and I don't like  to move them around as it's fiddly -- with 2 grass/twigs you then need to re-place them in the correct slot when they're consumed by creating the torch, with 3 you don't)
