Woodie and Sanity

Recommended Posts

What is Woodie good for again?

Don't get me wrong, he's actually without a doubt my absolute favorite character, I love the aspect of a lumberjack with a living axe. But, it seems that Maxwell has taken his position has lumberjack, even with just one shadow Maxwell is able to muster up a ton of logs without even knowing it. While Woodie has to eat half the logs he chops.

Not only does Maxwell outshine him in woodcutting, he's also able to multitask by both collecting the previously mentioned logs and mining rocks. My average Maxwell playthrough has me at around 4 stacks of 40 rocks and 3 stacks of 20 wood after a few days.

And Woodie's werebeaver does him more harm than good if he isn't properly played, though it's true you can chop down quite a few trees during your time as a werebeaver, that's only for a little time, and that little time costs sanity.

I'd love some suggestions on some ways to use Woodie to benefit me and others.

Sanity Penalties

Boy, I love me some sanity penalties, sanity is the most unique way to develop caution and worry in Don't Starve (Together), I just feel like not enough things change during sanity loss. Like sure, rabbits and bunny men turn nightmarish, but that's it.

I propose that we get more nightmarish and freakish animals as you lose sanity, like beefalo and pigmen and such. And while I'm on the idea of freakish, how about we get some faces on trees? Doesn't have to be every tree. It could be every select few.

I would just love to experience a whole new world while under the influence of insanity. We've already got the creepy demented music, all we need is some more visuals to really give the nightmares a pop! ( I love what they did with the nightmare chesspieces! )

Overall

I don't know, I just thought I'd throw some suggestions for maybe probably not happening future updates!

Woodie has to eat half the logs he chops? Naaaaah. When you turn into werebeaver, the meter fills up for each gnaw you do on a tree/rock/grave/etc. Don't eat the logs, just let yourself turn and enjoy the superspeed harvesting as you gnaw down a bunch of trees, which will turn you back. (Of course, you need enough trees in the vicinity, but this should not be an issue. And, admittedly, you'll still need to eat some logs over time when you're NOT harvesting- but Maxwell has to get nightmare fuel to chop anyway so this is pretty even, imo.)

Yeah, this costs you a little sanity. But Woodie gains 5 sanity for each pinecone he plants, so sanity is... pretty much completely and utterly free. This is a pretty decent perk imo since Woodie can do any actions that drain your sanity without a care, use night armor/dark sword, etc.

It would be nice if there werebeaver was slightly more useful, though.

I would love such improvements too!

I will add a few things you missed @Maknov.

Woodie is a really great asset while fighting the toadstool, you just have to bring him a lot of wood to gnaw on since chopping down the mushtrees drains his wood-o-meter which risks turning him into a werebeav.

Maxwell and Woodie have ways of going insane for farming nightmare fuel, but Maxwell has a safer route since he's human and can exit at any time with just a left click and right click of a sanity restoring item.

Maxwell can read Wickerbottom's books  ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) but late game isn't too great once you get a bee hat for your lovely librarian.

I also honestly agree that either Woodie or Maxwell need to be reworked because they just feel like the same character with little to none differences.

Well, first it must be established; the character system is completely imbalanced and overpowered. And the community prefers it that way.

Woodie is supposed to be the woodcutting meta who can stay permanently sane using the seeds he gets from woodcutting. Then werebeaver form is more of a free combat and super woodcutting mode then a quirk. In Don't Starve Together, werebeaver has no real combat advantages. So, it's just Woodie being a relatively boring woodcutter meta who is outplayed by Maxwell.

Yes, Maxwell is better, because Maxwell is the gathering god with extremely poorly coded gatherers and useless duelists. Why, because no balance. Any changes would just disrupt the meta system, the main benefit Woodie should get is werebeaver having combat use. Something more then just woodcutting.

More insanity features would be interesting but it is a pretty wide scope that does not directly contribute to the gameplay, would rather the developers add more base content. Sanity in general is a very skimpy feature though. The Shadows are so weak, and there are so few of them. This really should be a thing

Yeah but... Maxwell can wield the shadow sword without losing any sanity at all and has a massive sanity regen. Woodie can wield it, as long as he's planting pinecones every few seconds.

Also yes, please. Werebeaver is the coolest curse to come out for any of the characters, this would be great.

Woodie's werebeaver form is neither good at gathering nor is it good at combat.  It has poor damage and armor, and takes more gnaws than tool uses (3-4x more) for everything but trees.

Maxwell clearcutting every tree is really not an issue because eventually you'll have the trees synced in growth and be drowning in pinecones.  Other than glommer's statue there's really nothing that is an issue for digging and mining either.

Woodie is better than wilson, but certainly worse than maxwell in terms of power and team contribution.

Maxwell was changed to have less sanity regen than a dark sword drains.  It's still great but not as massive as before.
