Tencent will be launched in a few months after China's exclusive DST new role

Then wouldn't the best solution be to just not make exclusive content in the first place?

He did explain why there are pressures and good reasons to do this, especially in a market where piracy is so prevalent. A smaller company would have less klout in such negotiations as well. Some sense of proportion in this matter would be welcome.

It would, but a giant corporation like Tencent can be very demanding. All like feeling "special". Some have more of an urge towards collectibles and such. I can imagine Klei was faced with a "choice" along the lines of "bring us the heart of Snow White or watch your game being pirated over and over again" (remember these posts about people asking for support of versions which were unverified?) - little room for negotiations here. I suppose the best they could do was say they're not going to keep dancing to their tune all the time, AKA the things they are getting/will get eventually will be made available to us poor Steam and console users... (Maybe? Perhaps? Think paper, fireworks, porcelain and gunpowder... Other parts of the world did get them, eventually...)

Right now Klei uses the NAT traversal services that come with the platforms - this means that PS4 can't play with Steam which can't play with QQ which can't play with TGP - purely for technical reasons. It's a limitation we'd love to remove if we could solve the technical problems AND the platforms agreed, but it's non-trivial for a company of our size. We'd have to have relay servers all over the world, and we just can't compete with the likes of Valve and Sony in this regard, and we don't want to give people a worse play experience by making them use our relay servers instead of the better ones their platform provides.

I see, thank you a lot for the clarification.

The reason I was asking about it is the flood of very improperly-behaving people shortly after DST was launched on Tencent. Maybe I'm being just extremely unlucky recently, but with the sudden influx of players with little to no knowledge of the game, mostly trying to kill various creatures (including my tentacles!) instead of using the environment sensibly, stealing, rage-quitting, only speaking enough English to insult others for... speaking English. An odd thing, their nicks are in kanji. I had to turn my servers to group-only for now, because there is no way to play in such a hostile environment. Some silver lining for me is the fact they can't be from Tencent since there can be no migration of users - still, it's rather disheartening. We'll try to sit it out and make them public again after some time has passed.

I personally think the piracy thing is just a silly excuse for exclusive content. A pirated copy is likely going to be one of the following: A: Not have any skins available or B: Have a modification to the game that unlocks all skins. I don't think most pirates are going to just suddenly buy the game and THEN buy the expensive and exclusive skins. If they pirated the game in the first place then there's a good chance they did so because they didn't want to pay for anything.

And yeah, Tencent could have pressured them into this, but (I hope it's safe to assume this) Klei has all the rights to their own game and could have easily declined right? I mean Tencent is already getting a cut out of the sales of the game and likely skin sales too. Why do they need exclusive content on top of that?

Platform-Exclusive content is supposed to incorporate the logo and be silly (like the android bug costumes on android versions of apps).

They're not supposed to be good

Or if they're going to be good we need to get stuff just as good, the lunar new year stuff isn't on par with the Rose set at all. (I know you said the rose set will come to us, but just as an example.)

I think Steam needs a Steam-Punk Set.

I'd rather see everyone get everything at around the same time instead of adding even more platform exclusives to balance out the other platform exclusives.

But... that's what JoeW said will happen?

There won't be exclusives, just sometimes some people will get stuff earlier than others.

YES! Yes, this should be pinned here.

I agree. There's one caveat though... Klei is not big. Tencent is huge. I'm pretty sure there was a (no idea how notable) carrot and a stick (of piracy). What a company as Tencent is capable of, business-wise, is beyond our scope, I think.

The post seemed... softer than a solid "there won't be exclusives". At least the reading in my case was "We don't want exclusives, so we'll try to eventually remove the exclusive part, if we can".

So... timed exclusives. Those can be just as bad sometimes, especially when there's no set date on when the exclusivity deal ends.

At the moment with separate servers, at least you don't see people parading about in the new skins.

(In my case, it's not even as much of disappointment there is a split in content, but the fact the rose collection is very steeped in the lore - which we've been unveiling for years now - and we have no access to it. It's like the triumphant series showing up, chronologically, after Adventure Mode, just a step forwards.)

Yeah, for me I think part of this is also the fact that it's region exclusive on top of platform. I'm fine with region exclusives if there's a large cultural difference and I'm fine with platform exclusives if it comes down to an actual technical issue, but in this case it's none of the above. It's also a little heartbreaking seeing a developer I love doing something I hate. But Klei, I still love you guys despite all this.

How many times should I say YES in order to express just how much I agree with your approach :wilson_love:?

Mmm, everyone getting everything at the same time clearly isn't going to happen so unless we get our own early exclusives we're going to be the only ones subjected to waiting.

If this kind of thing has to happen, it should happen to everyone.

I don't think that will happen, because we're already Klei's customers (and loyal fans). Unlike new clients, we don't need additional forms of persuasion to support the company. Sad but true.

I guess we just share very similar opinions on this subject. So I'd say just about every post I make on this subject then.

Though I don't think any of us would complain about getting a bit more persuaded.... Klei pls bless us with your gifts

None of us would, I swear!

The issue is, some nations have certain business models, and thus expect, um, special treatment, let's say. In order to conduct business in their countries, companies like Klei have little choice but to yield.

Whether it's worth it or not is up to debate.

To be fair though, we might be upset now, but if we do eventually get the rose collection in the rest of the world, we basically got a really cool set of cosmetics that most likely wouldn't have existed otherwise. I'd prefer if the whole special treatment practise wasn't necessary myself, but it's not the end of the world.

The end of the world is me defiling the designs by doodling them.

@ImDaMisterL Well, 'earlier' is a tricky word. There is never promise how much time this 'earlier' is constrained. A year? Forever?
