Questions before buying

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I was turned on to this game a few days ago and had some questions after researching the game (which looks great btw)

Should I get the Singleplayer or DST, I saw they both are beginning to branch out in content. The singleplayer has RoG and Shipwrecked but Don't starve Together has A New Reign coming soon.

Does this mean Don't Starve development is halted and focused now on DST?

Will the content eventually be ported back and forth between the two versions?

I heard a great deal about how DST offline (essentially singleplayer) will be really hard due to MP balances, has anyone here tried it and is it too difficult?

I'd like to get into modding for the game as well, which one has the more vibrant modding scene?

Is there any other info you'd think would be pertinent before buying.

Yes.

DST might get Shipwrecked, but I highly doubt DS will get A New Reign, since it'd conflict with the lore of the game.

The bosses basically have double the HP, and the Dragonfly becomes a static boss with much more HP.

Both are always getting new mods, but I think most of the modding community already moved on to DST.

Can't think of anything right now, but if I were you I'd get DST first. It has better performance, free RoG, extra content (aside from SW). It's really great.

Plus, pets and gates will be added to DST in an update that'll launch this Thursday, how cool is that?

Thanks for the quick and informative response! Definitely helped me make the decision!

Yes, I have, It's way more difficult to deal with DST when you're alone. But it's still possible to beat all the bosses alone with very hard work.

Come regularly on Sundays here, we pray to our lord and savior Potato Cup AKA: Cupthulhu by doing sacrifices and rituals.

Welcome to our friendly little den of iniquity and madness community! Pretty much all the aswers have already been answered by the time I got there, but to explain the part about DS and DST, let me add this... Putting it into spoilers just in case. I hope it helps.

DST is a chronological continuation of DS.

In DS, you play one person kidnapped by Maxwell, the puppet king of the parasitic dimension of THEIRS. At the end of Adventure Mode, you are supposed to free Maxwell from the Nightmare Throne... and you succeed... but this turns out to come with the bonus of taking his place.

Now, DST happens a bit later on. Wilson - the first character you have access to in DS, the wannabe scientist in the trailers etc. - has spent a bit (presumably a very meagre bit) of time on the Throne. Charlie, that is Maxwell's ex-assistant turned into the Grue who attacks you in the night without a source of light, comes and frees him, but her shadow-tainted part throws him back into the wilderness. Then, her light and shadow selves fight, ultimately fusing into one relatively stable self who takes over as the new puppetmistress. Wilson and Maxwell bump into each other and are used by Charlie to build a portal facilitating the passage of transients between their islands.

This is why DS is a complete game, getting glitches resolved for now, whereas DST receives new content - said content being Charlie's doing.

I hope it helps. Be sure to visit more often after making up your mind, we will be glad to help you!

Welcome to the forums! Don't worry, we might be mad, but we're all gentlemen. Or at least jellymen.

Now, sorry for stirring up some trouble, but I personally would actually suggest you get singleplayer DS first. While there isn't MUCH story-focused content, there is SOME, namely Adventure Mode, which basically consists of a small chain of challenging worlds in which you have to perform a task, getting harder and harder every time. And even that aside, DS is better optimizied for playing on your own, which I personally find to be the better introduction to the game.

I still fondly remember my first couple of worlds... dashing about from berry bush to berry bush, standing at the seaside at night, staring out in the thick, threatening darkness as my fire gently crackled beside me... running from the hounds eager to bite my bum off... and then eventually getting pecked to death by a giant eyeball on legs.

Meanwhile, if you were to start out in DST, not only would you not even properly die after getting pecked to death by an eyeball, you would just turn into a spoopy ghost, but there also is a good chance of there being friendly people, trying to help you out, trying to rob you of that cruel survival experience, the selfish bastards! You would lose a lot of the mystery if you started out online, and even if you were to just play on a private server at first, it still wouldn't be ideal due to the aforementioned spoopy ghost mechanic.

Plus, singleplayer DS also has Shipwrecked, which is a pretty substantial addition that has yet to be ported to DST (though some extremely picky people don't like it that much... I'm not going to mention any names since they try to remain anonymous)

DST is much harder solo imo, everything has more health and considering the steep learning curve that's not really a good thing when you're starting out.

If at all possible I'd recommend DS first (then when you're ready for more challenge adding ROG), and then later graduating to DST since there are more mechanics being added. That's how I personally played the games and I really enjoyed it.

Excellent. DST is now a somewhat better option if you cannot afford both games at once (you can play alone OR with people), but DS gives you a more slow-paced experience. The worlds are hard, yeah, but you take the social gambit out. You meet all kinds of people after all.

Also, in DS, you get a dapper coat!

Affirmative. I personally would also advise against playing with strangers in DST in general, or at least with strangers unwilling to properly communicate. Get some friends to buy the game or befriend somebody on the forums, get a personal coop world going. I can guarantee that it will be a more enjoyable experience than some random server where you are bound to at least encounter a few manure dispensers.

The OP could actually play with some of us!

Yes, I gotta say, I agree with Meingroesster--I would very much reccommend starting off on regular Don't Starve first.  It may not be as popular as Together, but from what I can see, it really does help to get the _basics_ down on your own first.  I've always felt that people who did start off on regular DS seem to be a little more...together, and smooth, on multiplayer.  I mean, at least they're already fluent with the controls and know that hounds exist, winter (and summer) will happen, don't attack tallbirds without armour on, don't go near red-butted beefalo, etc.

The players who haven't seen this whole game-universe at _all_ before leaping into the much more complicated version--filled with random people, no less, some of whom might be jerks (or just too _busy_ to teach you)--tend to be the REALLY clueless ones who flounder around a lot and die soon.

...or I could be a bit predjudiced 'cos I myself was a DS veteran of...(counts) four? months before I got Together.  ;)

(But seriously, I have actually seen the scenario I just described.  Several times.)

Edit:  You could totally play with me, but the ping might not be the best--I tend to play at weird hours for an American, so a lot of the time, the players who are awake and able to play are from Eurasia!  Look up "Zelynda" in the server list and if I'm on, you'll find it.  I do try to run one of the nicer servers out there, and I am ALWAYS willing to help newbies with information.

...unless it's the middle of an emergency and I can't stop running to type.  : P

...Notorious

Am I the only one who thinks DS is much better than DST?

In DST when you die, you can start thinking how to resurrect after death. I think that killed main idea of game.

Too bad that DS is full of bugs that developers are just ignoring. Yeah I know they fixed some of them but many more are just ignored.

Still I suggest playing DS for singleplayer and DST only if you are going for the multiplayer. (Sorry for my English)
