My Two Cents on the Caves

Blech. This place again. I'm sure we all saw that one way or another, probably just finding our ways to the ruins or to stop by and pick a green mushroom.

What an eyesore of space. It's just... a mix of trees blended with lightbulbs, flooring, and mushrooms. But what if there could be more to it? The green mushroom forest is a galore of rabbit hutches, while red mushroom forests contain cave spiders and rocks, and blue forests is dense with wood, mushrooms and well... there's silk?

Kinda pointless to venture into the mixed mushroom forest (in regards of semi-long runs of DST) than to shovel some mushrooms in the blue/green mushtree forests. They're like the mosaic biome of the surface! But wait, what are these glowing orbs?

Remember these fellas roaming a tidbit away from your campfire?

Spore.PNG

They can be collected via bug nets, but their only practical use is well, light and ashes. They spawn seasonally prior to their color. However, what if they can be planted similarly to crops? Sure, a nice little farm full of green and blue mushrooms to aid with sanity/hp would help, while red for filler. Even so, spores could have the specialty of converting trees to mushtrees. How neat would that be?

To make up for the sheer abundance of spores that can be spawned at once, either their spawn rate could be drastically decreased or rather have some special procedures to make such thing true (i.e fertilization).

Some other thoughts:

  • Old bell + Buncha icky spores (+ glommer wings once more) = Fairy Bell (blue for slightly more light/protection, green for slight speed/sanity buff, red for slightly slowered hunger)
  • A bit more mushrooms falling from each chopped tree
  • Mushtree Guards
  • Avocado cup confirmed?

*le spoiler de spoilage*

Did anyone forget this hunk of froggy-glory? He was last mentioned in a few Thursday streams ago.

Spoiler

I bet he smells like mayonnaise. Should he smell like mayonnaise? I think I said this at one point in my life.Froggy.PNG

I'd imagine him as a raid boss, roaming somewhere exclusively in mixed mushroom forests. Probably not as magnificent and easily exploitable  as Dragonfly, but regardless would probably pose some AoE damage and contains around the same difficulty. Maybe then will there be a use for the mixed mushtree forests! Just a presuming thought.

Mushoes anyone? HypnofrogToad's Stool? (best pun in da house) There's mush to offer.

TL;DR: Plantable mushrooms, raid boss in mixed mushtree forest.

Y'know, you could just... not shovel the mushrooms, and they'll grow back?

What I like about the mixed forest is there's mushrooms available to pick all hours of the day and spores in 3 out of 4 seasons.  But then I mostly use mushrooms for vegetable filler.  I do wish the spores had more (any) uses, though, whether farming mushrooms, converting trees into mushtrees, or making a mushroom hat.

Although it would be nice to be able to plant some shrooms in your base.

maybe the spores can be used as fuel for lanterns, and being around mushrooms has a chance to make them grow into mushroom trees?

Indeed, shoveling mushrooms is highly discouraged :? but I often do so (I play on public servers too often).

And nice notice on converting, I'll add it to the bucket-of-ideas.

I actually wanted spores to be plantable as mushrooms too, but then I realized that could get incredibly broken. Mushrooms will regrow with around 10 hours of rain, and you can use a telelocator staff to cause rain (with some length of cooldown, I think, but I'm not sure what), so imagine the craziness of getting 100-ish green or blue mushrooms to pick every day or so. Instead, maybe you could set them down, and they merely have a CHANCE to plant themselves as new mushrooms.

Actually, just discovered that instead of forcing rain like it did in single-player, the telelocator staff simply increases moisture in the air, which will cause rain after it reaches a certain level. Took about 8 casts to force rain to come after a rain storm ended. Even so, mushrooms are pretty powerful to be able to plant spores for them 1:1.

P.S.: Shadow creatures can be teleported, haha.

Creatures that emit light like the pet lavae but can be taken underground as a light source if fed spores. Me gusta mucho.

That is if you could take followers underground, in which case, you can't.

Maybe bringing spores to the surface could work.

I am talking about cave mobs - like Hutch. And is not it possible to bring rock lobsters to the surface?

That should be added to the wiki then. It can confuse people. It makes sense not to be able to bring them to the surface. But spore-related mobs underground? Why not?

No, its not just rock lobsters. You can't bring any followers to or from the caves.

Or anyone else...

Just kill the dragonfly a second time and bring the lavae egg underground and then hatch it, boom portable camp fire, light, and heat.

Maybe they could add a mushroom farm under the food tab, perhaps with guano in the crafting recipe on which spores can be planted for a mushroom similar to planting a seed for a crop. Unlike creating new mushroom plants this wouldn't be overpowered. Also maybe spores could infest nearby evergreens and slowly turn them into mushtrees (I'm pretty sure Wickerbottom says that mushtrees are trees infected with a mushroom parasite).

But this is what we all know. I suggested having mobs you could befriend in the caves and corelated with spores.

Yes, naturally, similarly I need just one bird as I move the same one between the shards in my inventory, but I just want new mobs.
