What do you play on or set up for multiplayer?

Recommended Posts

I was wonder what everyone plays on when they go into multiplayer. Do you go on a huge dedicated server? Do you try your luck with a non dedicated server? Or make your own/ join friends? The servers you make usually private or public? Any mods you use client or server wise?

I usually skip between huge dedicated servers and making my own private to play with my friends with some mods since a certain friend usually has a lot of misadventures in his time and a lot of accidental forest fires in the night. Sometimes I'll try my luck with non dedicated player servers hoping they wont kick me right away.

I'm rarely playing on my own server, because nobody seems to join. And it's gotten just boring to me. It's more interesting when other people play, even griefers are welcome, because they bring something new to beware.

I'm mostly playing on public servers, joining those with no mods (or really minimal mods that don't affect gameplay too much). I tend not to join those with 10+ players, because the server will lag a lot.

I agree it being fun with randoms, I also don't mind griefers but usually I'm by myself on servers. Sometimes other will join me but it's usually only one person. The only reason i make private is for my friend who doesn't like randoms but i feel that adds way more to the fun since you don't know who will find you or what they'll do and might make surviving harder or give you a hand and you make a friend.

I usually try to find small servers that have caves available. My reason being is that a smaller group means that there will be less chaos, and everyone is a bit more coordinated. I remember a server where only 4 people were allowed at any given time, and we made a pretty good base in only 13 in-game days. Of course, I think chaos is hilarious, and I recommend looking for a server with it when you're bored. I just stick to the smaller servers when I'm serious about my time and I want to safely get presents.

Even though I rarely do my local hosts anymore, I still prefer it for the most part over a dedicated if for no other reason than having more interesting world settings put in place, most of which are practically... heck... ARE non-existent on anything that isn't a local host. I'm always cranking up the Krampus to no less than "more", gambling with random season lengths/starts, and just seeing what kind of chaos not only challenges, but is also a lot of fun to play through.

My favorite things to set higher than default, aside from Krampuses of course, is the tallbirds, catcoons, and lureplants, the birds and plants for the risk/reward (and easy destructibility to custom tailor where I want them in the world), and the catcoons for pseudo-trading posts all over the world and tails for the upcoming Beefalo taming. I also experiment with putting volt goats on more since it can lead to more... shocking Spring seasons :)

Now if I'm in the mood to really crank up the challenge, I boost the hound attack rates as well as the spiders (usually putting "Plus" mode on from the world prefab settings) and sometimes even the Merm houses so that they show up outside the swamp (these can be a real pain to get rid of when fighting to make your world safer). Less frequently since it's multiplayer, I might also reduce sapling spawns and boost spiky bush spawns to make that initial foraging/scavenging harder.

I'd be forgetting a true personal favorite if I forgot to mention Light's Out mode though. There were a couple dedicated servers running it here and there for some time back before the Caves Beta and even one fairly early into it, but these seem to have completely disappeared now.

As for mods... well I avoid almost every single modded server like the plague. If they are incorporating mods that make the experience easier, or worse, those god-awful ownership mods or ones that make it so that you can't burn things like trees and such for warmth, I will outright refuse to go there.

I usually go on dedicated servers... preferably servers that have just reset or at about 3-5 days away from winter/summer... I make a run to get the base necessities and prefabricate an alchemy engine, tent, crockpot, an icebox 9 (if I get lucky to find clockworks or tumbleweed gears), a birdcage, spider egg sack, and about all the pine cones I can collect from cutting down big tress... I find a secluded area in the map rarely visited by people... or the desert... set up camp there and if someone happens to find me, offer my assistance... if they wish to join, I let them since they already know where I am I can't say no... then spend the entirety of my stay in the server roaming and visiting other settlements and offering whatever I can like food/supplies in exchange for their other supplies... cleaning up loose and un-dug stumps, and offering quests in a dramatic NPC tone like "Oh brave warriors, I have encountered a Warg in the <insert direction here>, who wishes to aid me in conquering this beast and farming their gems?!"

Sure makes my stay entertaining...
