Recommended quality-of-life mods?

Recommended Posts

I've used mods extensively in the base game to tweak the experience, and I'm using a few as well now, but I go a couple of months between servers and every time my group goes to play again something is bugged out with a mod. Having a clear listing between client and server mods has made it easier to find which one is generally causing the problems.

What I'm hoping someone can do for me is point me in the direction of some good, stable quality of life improvement mods to enhance the DST experience. I'm not looking for game breaking mods, like most of the modded weapons or being able to easily craft rare items. Mainly things like Diggable Reeds, Inventory Sort, Backpack+Amulet Slot, Where's My Beefalo, Auto-Retrap. I'd also be interested in balanced new content mods like Additional Set Pieces (which is one of my all time favorite mods since it adds interesting elements to exploration).

My usual mod for comfort are:

Amulet+Backpack slot,

Storm cellar/Cupboard,

Minimap icons,

Always on status,

Smarter crockpot,

Bigger stacks.

I think that's all. I would use retrap if I used traps but I'm never using them.

Mods which I find convenient and fun to use are the following:

Client Mods:

Spoiler

Status Announcements (mostly to tell people how much of X I have without stopping to type)

Don't Auto-attack Abigail

Ice Fling Range Check (client version)

No Wall Attack

Dusk and Night Music (make sure to set it so it only plays while busy)

Geometric Placement (OCD solved)

Complete Your Map (to see Beefalo and gold rocks, certain enemies, etc)

Smarter Crock Pot

Always On Status

Minimap Hud

Gesture Wheel

Server Mods:

Spoiler

DST Equipment Switcher (when you equip something, the unequipped item replaces the equipped one in your inventory bar)

Respawnable Gears (mostly if playing with a WX, since they lose gears on death, and tumbleweed farming is super annoying)

DST-SignPlus (label your chests for sorting purposes)

Global Positions

Health Info

Bee Nice (makes beekeeper hat not a waste of silk)

No Idle Wall Attack

Fear of Gnomes

Wormhole Marks

Shameless Self-Promotion:

Spoiler

Permanent Fertilizer (allows you to permanently fertilize berry bushes, if you craft a fertilizer using otherwise-useless shell fragments)

Tools Are Fuels (allows you to burn nearly every item in the game with a durability, so that you can delete all those useless axes and football helmets with 6% left that always seem to crop up in any base I've ever played in)

In the category "Balanced new content", I like :

- Pickle It. New food, you can pickle the food. More variety.

- Waiter 101 Together. New recipes. Interresting point is that it could make you change the way you use some ingredients. And sometime you must avoid to use too many of one ingredient. For example, too many mushroom in a dish and you obtain a bad recipe : this way, you have to be careful, and find another food to balance your recipe.

- Koalefanta Proboscidea : add new koalefant that you could find following track. It's fun to discover new koalefant when you hunt.

- Beefalo Milk and Cheese.

- Useless junk (better reward to fishing, i suggest to configure it to low chance)

- Aquarium : you could have fish or eel in an aquarium. Good for food and sanity. Building an aquarium is not too easy, so it's a good little objective.

Quality life improvement

- Bee nice : bee don't attack you if you harvest a beebox with a beekeeper hat. Very useful and logical.

I've made some mod that could be in one of these category too

Thanks for sharing that Snowhusky5. Thanks to you I found here the rest of mods I was looking for that are in the same "Don't Auto-Attack" category. :)

Now I'm only missing one to stop attacking pigs when they assist me in taking armies of spiders and I'll be all set. :)

Oh, and nice of you that split mods into sections (client and server), unlike the others that posted after you. :p

Lol, I didn't know about those other two mods. You shouldn't have to worry about hitting your pigs, since spiders are always hostile, and thus can be attacked just by pressing f rather than ctrl f even if they arent attacking you at the moment.

If your looking for mods that are stable, it really so much depends on the author, some author's are very good at writing and testing their mods.  Rezecib's mod's are all great examples of stable mods.

I do a pretty decent job keeping up with bug reports on my mod's, generally speaking though, some modders do things that work fine on server side, but don't test it client side.  Generally speaking, if the author replies to your bug report, then you know you can rely on that author.

For me, these are the only real server side mod's I use whether I activate modded characters or not.

-Large Chests Mod (Because it's just easier to keep things in order, and it's not any different from making multiple chests)

-Tallbird Mod (Because raising these little bastards is already hard as it is, they better appreciate us more)

-Wormhole Marks (Because it's easy to get lost)

I tend to prefer only using mod's that just make things worthwhile (When they normally arent) or make things less of a hassle.  So I can see what you mean by things that aren't "Game Breaking."

I tend to prefer not having the amulet/backpack slot though, because having a backpack AND armor/temperature clothing would just make the game WAY too easy, space management is part of the challenge after all.

For client side, Most of the things I use are listed already, except heres a couple more.

-Gold Boulder Minimap Icon

-Flingomatic Range Check

Update on this topic: the complete your map mod is kinda borked, for some reason, all creatures which get a map icon added also lose the ability to make sounds, only on dedicated servers. You can still use it, I just recommend disabling all of the creature map icons.

Another very convenient mod is the Scythes mod, which allows you to craft tools to harvest your twig and grass farms faster.
