bigpak
I'm wondering where the best place to set up base camp is, I've played this game many hours and I still haven't come to a sound conclusion. What do you guys think? Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/60827-best-place-to-live/ Share on other sites
Auth
I'm wondering where the best place to set up base camp is, I've played this game many hours and I still haven't come to a sound conclusion. What do you guys think? A place by beefalo, somewhat close to a cave entrance/rock biome, and where pig king isn't millions of miles away. Some will argue swamps are good to camp near, but reeds aren't necessary 100% unless you want a bird cage or some blow darts, or you're playing wickerbottom. I also recommend making another base in a desert (if you've got RoG) so you can have grass and twigs all winter. WillowCrocker
Honestly, from what I've experimented with, I personally believe the deciduous forest is the best. But that's just me - different people will tell you different things. I like that one because there's *usually* pigs nearby, which are incredibly useful for poop (for farming) and if you need that little oomph for a fight. It'd also be helpful to be near a grassland for Beefalo, if pigs aren't an option for you (for example if you're playing Webber, or simply don't want to deal with them) because they're also a pretty decent resource for poop/meat. Though definitely look for a place where you're near several different biomes, if at all possible. Just avoid camping directly in the marsh, as that's usually miserable. grekon
Depends on your play style. What have you learned and believe to be most effective is going to decide where you are going to settle. I settle somewhere with easy access to spiders and pigs. All the loot spiders and pigs drop are useful to me. My favorite weapon is ham bat and I tend to make a lot of dry racks both for meat and monster meat. And I also like it to be in close distance to a sinkhole. As long as that is satisfied I'm good. Other people look for beefalos, Pig King, pig villages or reeds if you are Wickerbottom. Its up to you and how you want to play. This game does not require from you the most efficient play. One thing I would always do is set up my base in between two or more biomes for easier access to more resources. Jabberwok
Definitely near spiders. Farming silk is crucial for clothing, teching up, and a lot of useful tools. With a crock pot, I can just use monster meat for my meatballs, don't have to worry as much about naughtiness. My best location was next to a pig village, spider nests, and a chessboard, all of them so close that they were constantly fighting. It was great. bdiz4shiz
My go to is to find the paved path and take it to the end (where a pig village is usually located with the other one at the other end of the road). Sometimes you can luck out on a world gen and find a pig village with one or several berry, grass, and flower farms. Not to mention the usefulness of the pigs in keeping spiders and hounds distracted. that being said... living near a beefalo heard is also beneficial. But the nice thing about beefalo herds is that you can move them and lock them into a grass wall pasture Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/60827-best-place-to-live/#findComment-698114 Share on other sites
PhelsarusBeel
For me it depends on who i play as but most of the time i settle in a middlegroud where most of the important stuff ins't to far away (like rock biomes for extra Gold/Flint/Rock or Swamps for Reeds and ponds) and i got decend acces to food sources (Rabbits, Spiders, Beefalos, and all the Fruits/Vegtables). However sometimes it's also a good idea to go out of your comfortzone and try something new for example i just started playing as Wigfrid (first time since i haven't touched DS in a long time) and so far setteling near some spiders and pigs does a great job of feeding me since i can easily outdo the debuffs from eating Monstermeat by just fighting more spiders and even if i'm not around the pigs will fight them and i can collect the spils everytime i return to my base. However there isn't really a best place you just need to figure out what you think works the best for you. Lady Tyrantess
I love the spring-ish grassland areas. Nice bright greens with lots of berry bushes, rabbits, hives, and other plethora of useful stuff. I always spend more time finding the right spot to call home in the beginning before exploring, and once I find it, I make more room to put stuff down on so A, nothing looks cramped, and B, nothing can catch fire and spread to worse conditions. I later make minor stakeout spots if I need to traverse the map to get to a spot thats far away due to spawn rate (beefalo herds or villages at the opposite end of the map, so I have a safe spot to be in-between travels to prevent what sips calls as "getting caught with my pants down" (or some degree like that) But yeah like others have said, it depends on what you like. Do you like being near beefalos or villages or spider dens? Do you find it more useful to be on the edges of swamps or chess biomes? Maybe some place with lots of trees to turn everything into wood! I got my inspiration for the perfect home by exploration, walking around (a lot) and taking note of everything I saw and what I felt was more useful when the world generated. Some biomes had more of what I wanted in one area, some less, but the thing I do recommend is explore and see what you like and what areas have the most of what you're looking for to survive. emerphish
In a deciduous forest, not too far from a grassland is all I need. Rocks you can mine all in one go, swamp loot is the same deal if you bring a giant there. Birch nuts are good food, pigs are a great resource (4 monster meat=2 meat and a pigskin), and glommer is nearby for that krampus farming and the sweet, sweet goop. Shmoopy
I haven't tried RoG yet, so this is what I do for a vanilla game:I prefer to set up camp in grassland near beefalo. In the beginning, once you craft a Bush Hat, you can let them do all the heavy lifting of the early hound attacks.Reading this thread, I'm guessing I use a different strategy than most for survival here-- basically, I craft 4 crock pots; during the summer, I survive on Meatballs, and during the winter, I survive on Dragonpies (1 pomegranate + 4 twigs in a crock pot). This requires having a birdcage to get more pomegranate seeds, and a lot of farmland, and either a lot of rabbits or a good source of monster meat.Sure-- it's lazy as hell. But I've survived over 400 days with it. Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/60827-best-place-to-live/#findComment-702384 Share on other sites
Talavaj
I personally make a camp in desert to farm hounds, cacti, buzzards and tumbleweed. But swamp and deciduous forest have to be nearby. If you don't have RoG then It really just comes down to being near the immovable points of interest such as reeds, ponds, pig king or whatever. absimiliard
If I base, I usually nomad, I prefer to be near a combination of cave entrances and worm-holes such that I can fairly easily jump from one side of the surface map to the other in several places. There's usually a travel nexus of "secret routes", you just need to explore enough (and jump WH) to discover it.
