So how hard is it going to be to pass stuff to the actual game?

Shipwrecked is cute and all, but I think I´m not alone when I say I miss the old Don´t Starve and the decision to make a different game was a misstep.

Really all that needs to be done to fix this mistake is just add boats to the core game. Obviously, it would look very different from Shipwrecked and some of the mechanics would be cut, like waves and wind.

Maybe some of the mobs can be added as well.

I have the feeling that Klei has no intention of doing this and this is why I´m addressing this issue. There was mention of Shipwrecked being added to the game with a sort of entrance similar to how Caves work and players would have the ability to bring items back from Shipwrecked to the real game, but I'm sensing that boats is not going to be included in that.

There's no guarantee that boats WON'T be added to the main game. Just, not through a crafting recipe.

I could imagine the player having to find a ruined boat and patch it up to working condition. Once that happens, maybe the opening will be different.....

Highly doubt its gonna be ported over to the base game. Maybe some of the stuff, and maybe a way to access the SW world through an ingame portal like the Adventure mode. Doubt we'll see anything until SW is out of Early Access stage anyway.

.... wat?

You can still play the "classic" Don't Starve. If you miss it, then play it. Problem solved. No one is FORCING you to play Shipwrecked.

So... you just want boats, and nothing else from Shipwrecked....?

Why? Like, I don't see a point in that...?

They have stated that you're going to be able to play the "normal" DS, find/make a thing to get to the "Shipwrecked" version with all your stuff, and go back and forth as you like.

They've said they are integrating it (it's in the FAQ...). That's the whole reason why it's a DLC instead of a standalone game as they initially announced. However, it's way more complicated than simply adding boats to the main world. Basically every system of the game is different-- what happens when items that don't exist in Shipwrecked get brought over to the Shipwrecked world, and vice-versa? The systems in place need to be able to work. Additionally, on the back-end side of this, when you load a DLC, it basically loads up a bunch of new files and replaces a bunch of files. This isn't really conducive to loading multiple DLCs at once, so there's a huge design issue to sort out there-- for example, by going through every single RoG system and making sure it works with things brought from Shipwrecked, and vice-versa.

The Malfunctioning Novelty Ride is probably going to be the portal back to the main world.

An example of a gnarly situation is bringing back a poisoned spear from Shipwrecked into the RoG world. RoG changed the way that the combat component worked, and Shipwrecked did too (in order to support poison, boats, etc). Either it needs some clever system for figuring out which copy to load (but this may not work for every case), or it needs to have both copies updated to support each others' quirks; RoG has electric damage as a mechanic, while SW has poison as a mechanic; both of these need to reach through the combat component to work, and both involve items that could be brought between worlds, so there needs to be a unified combat component that can support both. And this is just one situation of many.

Even if it wasn't a huge undertaking to port the water mechanics over to regular don't starve (Which it most certainly is a huge amount of work) I think it would totally throw the balance off of the regular game. We can put aside the enormous amount of work to move all of the other stuff for a moment because rezecib has pointed out some good examples albeit there are certainly hundreds more.

Since all of the land is usually connected in regular don't starve, they'd have to overhaul the map generation and it would kind of spoil the feel of the base game if you HAD to use boats to explore around. Plus how would you handle snow and winter? The water would have to freeze but then they would want to populate frozen water with some interesting stuff so it wasn't totally boring. That's a reasonable amount of new mechanics there.

The base game is fine and well balanced enough as it is, I see no need to throw boats into the mix. It also really forces you to be more nomadic where in the current DS you can get away with turtling a bit and don't have to frantically run around looking for resources.

I like that shipwrecked provides a different dynamic. I wouldn't necessarily say I prefer one over the other though so I would say merging the shipwrecked content directly into the old game would actually reduce the amount of gameplay variety you have.

Your complaints about shipwrecked's lack of content are definitely valid, but keep in mind the first EA version of Don't Starve didn't even have seasons, and had about a quarter of the amount of content that it currently has if not less.

I would wait for them to fill shipwrecked with more content, rather than try to mash these two similar but still fairly distinct versions of the game together.

I'm loving shipwrecked . It definately wasnt a mistake either.

In many ways its more what one thinks when they hear of a game called "Dont starve" anyways.

SW is exactly what i wanted.

I just needs ALOT of flood tweaks and summer tweak and new content.

AND MULTIPLAYER!

I agree completely. I love the fact that in SW you can't get away with building up a strong base camp for the first 90 days and then turtle up for as long as you want. I like the idea of travelling between the vanilla DS/RoG and SW but I wouldn't want them all mashed together. Like you said, they offer very different gameplay dynamics and that's part of the allure.

Patience is key, people. This is only the first version on early access. More content will come.

There are very, very good reasons why Shipwrecked is a DLC. Besides the already mentioned above there is another issue if you start packing content over content on the base game:

Powergrind!

Every content update has to be considerably stronger than the already existing content or introduces completely different game mechanics.

Let's just view on shipwrecked:

Shipwrecked is a considerably weaker build than RoG:

Poop or manure is an substaintial item for RoG. You can gather it easy, in high quantities and it has many uses. For early to midgame it is the number one fuel for fires and fling-o-matics and it is the best feritlizer.

In SW you can't gather manure easily and in high quantity and many players had to find other ways to build up farms (grass, bamboo etc.) and fuel their fires.

Or take the hounds tooth. They are incredibly rare in SW since you can't farm hunting parties in winter. This not only blocks the number one defense mechanism in RoG, a tooth trap field, but it also blocks a high supply of sewing kits which effects wether or not you can afford precious clothing.

In SW there is the eyeshot, a very weak version of the blow dart, but there is a good use for it because you can't craft large quantities of blow darts because you are missing the hounds tooth.

There are many more examples put I will stop here. The point is: If you combine current shipwrecked with RoG, people would most likely settle in RoG and would only venture out to collect the few powerful items or items needed thanks to new game mechanics.

They wouldn't try to survive only on the islands but a separated DLC forces you to do that. By that simple design decision Klei and Capy brought in much, much more content than a simple RoG-like addon would have done and this is why SW should stay a standalone world.

I feel like Shipwrecked is bursting with content, not the other way around. And there's so much more coming...

Well yes there is lot of new content but "bursting with content" is not words i would use now:

- there is lot of stuff just with different color or some skins like almost all turfs, grass, crabs, birds, fishermerm, poison warrior spiders, boars, apes, trees, butterflies, etc. etc.

- there is also lot of stuff that are same as in DS/ROG and some of it looks weird in SW especially Tallbirds (i hope we get at least some skin to these guys so we can raise some tropical version of them .) and spiders should be all that fluffy version as warrior spider is now, i haven't seen spiderqueen yet but i guess shes the same too, etc. etc.

And about "MUCH MORE COMING":

- how do you know? and how can be so sure?

- right now it looks like we get bunch of stuff

- 1-2giants (maybe only 1?), crafting 1-2 new items from giant drops (probably stuff that is already there), motor for boats, some kind of cave (volcano/lava cave) with maybe one new mob and new ancient station where we can craft obsidian stuff that is already in game and 3-4 new characters?

So i'm little worried about MUCH MORE COMING. I like SW a lot and i want it to be more awesome but right now with content that we have and what i write is coming doesn't feel like standalone game (what it should be at first) so i hope they didn't cut some content because of that DLC change AND with price tag of 5$ i feel bad even asking for more :(

To be on topic i think we will travel between worlds like we do to adventure mode so we can take our whole inventory with maybe backpack and of course without gloomer and chester :( BUT i still would like to have everything in one world (DS+ROG+SW) and it could be made like caves+ruins are in DST now so when you hop on boat the season (like nightmare cycle) will be ON/change.

No, but I want updates to the real game, like the old days.

I definitely agree with your criticisms of the re-skinned items making the new content feel a bit shallow, but I don't think that will be a major issue for shipwrecked long-term.

On the point of how can we know "much more coming" is true. Well yeah we don't know for sure, but you'd be hard pressed to find a developer who has a better track record for jamming their games full to the brim with interesting, varied and ambitious content.

I think it's a safe assumption the game will become packed with content eventually.

hasnt anyone been watching the livestreams??? The most recent ones featured Klei's artists drawing up NEW creature character ideas based on ppl's suggestions, in this case the Kraken, so yeah new stuff coming, no sweat
