SniderThanYou
Hi! I love the artwork and animation style of Don't Starve. Is there a common name for this animation style, in which all sprites are flat 2D animations, rendered in 3D using a non-orthogonal camera? Thanks! ButterStuffed
I remember somebody calling it pseudo 3D somewhere. I'm not sure if it's the proper name so don't quote me on that. Mobbstar
I would describe it as paper-pop-up-3-dimensional, but that is not very professional termology PPU3D Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/56775-is-there-a-name-for-the-games-2d-as-3d-animation-style/#findComment-660007 Share on other sites
SniderThanYou
Thanks all. I know that a flat animation in a 3D space is typically called a 'billboard', but in this case, the whole world is billboards, except for the ground. Hopefully a dev will pop into this thread. Regardless, I think it's great. blowtorch
yea it's art style is great, very unique but this game deserves some much more recognition it's not even funny Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/56775-is-there-a-name-for-the-games-2d-as-3d-animation-style/#findComment-660081 Share on other sites
ThaumicParrot
I believe it's called 2.5-D. Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/56775-is-there-a-name-for-the-games-2d-as-3d-animation-style/#findComment-660316 Share on other sites
Mobbstar
I believe it's called 2.5-D. Shall I really go over all the reasons why "half a dimension" is utter nonsense? Just don't say it, it's gibberish. emerphish
I don't think I've seen the style anywhere else before, and I think it's great. Shall I really go over all the reasons why "half a dimension" is utter nonsense? Just don't say it, it's gibberish. I second this. It's a coined term for this style.https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=2.5D Another example is Paper Mario. Well I know it's not actually half a dimension, I just thought that that was the term used to describe the style. Yeah, it sounds stupid if you think about it, but I believe it is the official name. It's used in a lot of games that are not defineable as either 2d or 3d. Talavaj
It's isometric graphics. Games have been animated this way since forever. Before full realtime-3d was feasible on contemporary hardware everything was 2d sprites on a 3 dimensional plane (respectively 2 dimensional if there was no verticality in the game), it is just more obvious in DS because of the art style and ability to rotate camera. It is identical to how games such as diablo and strategies were made back in the day. You're right, I remember this term now. WikiPedia agrees. As said, it's really obvious in DS because textures aren't in one harmonic perspective and the camera can be rotated. @SniderThanYou,@jbeetle,@ThaumicParrot Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/56775-is-there-a-name-for-the-games-2d-as-3d-animation-style/#findComment-663543 Share on other sites

The point was that 2.5D is a thing in gaming, just not literally, obviously.
