So, what's the point of Glommer's wings now?

First thing, why would you even have glommer wings? Glommer is more useful alive than dead, just sayin'

Glommer's main use in Don't Starve was to be killed for his wings so the player can make the Old Bell. Since the Old Bell doesn't actually exist in DST for balance reasons, Glommer is basically just a flying blob that makes annoying sounds with a pitiful sanity bonus that requires you to be touching him all the time.

 

He effectively serves no purpose in the game right now without the Old Bell. Either greatly extend his sanity aura, put the old bell back in, or completely rework him for DST.

Well he gives goop that is a great fuel and can still restore your sanity. And it can only do both only if he is alive. And if you find it that useless in DST, why don't you just leave it alone in its birch forest, then?

Goop drains 50 sanity upon eating it and should only be used as a last resort, he only drops goop once about every 2-4 days and isn't reliable as a fuel source.  His sanity bonus is barely anything at all, he only restores 6.25 per minute and requires you to practically stand inside of him to be within the aura. When you have multiple players trying to use him at once it's just a mess.

 

Also, I shouldn't want to leave him in the birch forest. He should actually function as a useful creature like he does in the original game. Either put the Old Bell back in the game, greatly extend his sanity aura for multiple players, or re-work him entirely. 

 

Glommer was originally created as a creature that would help the player move their structures. Perhaps they can look back into that?

I'd really like to see them give Glommer's sanity aura the treatment that Willow's fire sanity auras got-- once you're within a minimum distance, they max out. Because of collision, most sanity auras are pretty misleading because you'll never be able to get the maximum unless you are literally in the same position as the other thing, which is impossible. And this would make Glommer's sanity aura actually not terrible, and more usable by multiple players.

That is still pretty close. Not smelling Glommer's pores tier, but close.

People wanted a screen. Maybe that's too much.

 

Also, instead of attaching yet more FindEntities, maybe the sanity auras could be better implemented inside the sanity component?

To check for a minimum distance to specify in the sanityaura component, for example.

 

I wonder if auras can be improved.

Make entities loop through AllPlayers instead?

Make sanity auras specify values in map positions so people loop through positions nearby instead of entities?

Oh, wow, I didn't know you can use the wings for fuel! So that's one way of disposing of it. But what about the flower? It doesn't just disappear when Glommer dies; it withers and stays like that, serving no purpose whatsoever. And if you keep killing Glommer, well, your world will flood with his flowers... Oh wait, I forgot; there is one thing that can dispose of everything; the eyeplant.

@DarkXero, Yeah, Willow's distance for fires is 3, and that's almost a tile. I don't think Glommer should be more than a tile or two; I think if you're getting the sanity aura while he's following you, then the sanity aura would need to be nerfed.

 

The system definitely looks like it could be optimized. Probably the easiest way to optimize would be having the sanityaura component give a tag, so that the sanity component's FindEntities could filter by that tag-- assuming that tags actually put things in a list for the purpose of FindEntities, but I don't know that-- if not, better to invert the control flow, I think, and have the sanityaura component schedule 0.1s updates that loop through AllPlayers or something. It definitely doesn't need to be calculated every tick, although I guess that'll lose a little bit of the "smoothness" of transitioning into and out of an aura, but since when was that actually significant to gameplay?

If we could get someone to make a mod for the use of the wings that'd be cool. Or wait for klei to do stuff.

 

Maybe glommers wings could be used as a trinket, and given to the pig king for gold.

 

Or maybe you could use it to craft something, maybe in the magic tab.

 

Like a staff that has 10 uses, and when used it would gives everyone in the area a sanity boost of, say, 35 each, but takes like 15 health each. It could be like a purple gem with the wings glued on it, with a blue gem for the head, and bits of red gem for the eyes and feet, to resemble glommer, with 2 living logs for the staff and a goop to use as glue (not much more expensive than the telelocator staff.)

 

Or maybe a flying turret that follows you and shoots bee stingers at enemys you attack (though that sounds a bit violent for the use of wings from such a peaceful creature D:)
