I do wonder, did you have to send any custom data from server to client to get it to work properly, or was most of it taken care of by the DST api? Most of updating it was rewriting the character to follow the new server/client code division (things don't have certain things on the client, and instead are given replica versions that are sent from the server, as I understand it). So while before there was a big function where you put everything that customized the character, now there are two; one that runs on both client and server, and one that runs on the server only.
