Alright,

This is not exactly another one of those "Show me your base" threads.

Instead, it is more gameplay/strategy oriented.

What kind of base setup do you have/prefer to use?

If the poll cannot be answered, leave a post explaining your "Other" choice.

What I mean by a "base"

A place which consists of a permanent firepit (any kind) and other stuff which varies based on the base's purpose (MacTusk Farming?Cave Base?)

NOTE: Just a"firepit" with the sole purpose for illumination does not count.

I do not count preparatory measures such as a chest by a sinkhole entrance or touchstone as a base.

I have a theory that RoG players are more likely to prefer multiple satellite bases due to the new challenges introduced by summer and giants. I would like to test that theory, as well.

Also, how many of you guys have actually considered making multiple mini-bases to allow traveling around the map easier?(in the case that wormholes are dysfunctional)

Or are there advantages/disadvantages to each approach?

If there is a base setup that you guys believe needs to be added to the poll, I'll add it.

Let the DScussion begin!intentional typo and pun!

EDIT: If you don't own RoG, I added an option for that.

I don't have ROG yet so I am not sure if my answer matters but I have a few bases. One is my main base which has most my supplies, animals, crockpots etc. Then I have one near a wormhole that I use a lot in case I am traveling I can rest there, because gathering some supplies such as from the ruins and swamp is about a two day journey. Then I have my meat effigy which is next to a camp fire and chests that hold important supplies in case I die in Winter I don't have to worry about freezing  :)

I often have one big base (I like to build castles and stuff, so I turtle alot) with just one other base with nothing more than a endothermic firepit and a normal firepit to run do when giants are coming. I'll have to build a trail of them so I can light the path if they come at night.

Custom world options:

Start in autumn

Less hound attacks

Tentacles on lots so they appear out of the swamps and everything

More hound mounds

Where I build the bases:

I look for the potato thing because the little farmplace where it's in both has god supplies for the first few days and acts as a nice little bit of pre-builtbase that you can just add on to. It also happened to be between a savanah full of rabbits and beefalo with a desert full of gold, cacti, volt goats, and other rocks. So even better for me!

Foods I eat:

My map doesn't seem to have many berry bushes so cacti are my primary food, but I also get lots and lots of morsels from the rabbits and my crops.

Protection:

My entire base is protected from withering/combustion and off-screen is my endothermic fire just out of the flingomatic range so I can spend the time in my base to cool off there. I also have plenty of stone walls around the important structures.

Resource locations:

The place where I get my rocks from are quite a way away. I made this intentional, since it makes me more motivated to explore rather then turtle by making me think "I'm already all the way out here, might as well". However, the cacti are a good source of food and the beefalo/rabbit area are good for poop and more food. I have plenty of twigs and grass, and a nice beebox.

Places I avoid:

Near the Glommer statue where it says DEATH on the map is the angry bee field. And the other DEATH zone away from everything else in its own circle is full of enough spiders to kill me in seconds even with marble armour on.

I like to turtle for the first while or until my base is beautiful, then I hardly see it. When exploring I usually take: 40 logs, 40 grass, 40 twigs, 20 flint, an umbrella, a dagger(My custom character's item), a log suit, football helmet, backpack, and about 20 cactus flesh. And my Glommer flower because Glommer Goop is the best ever.

My beautiful base::

I only have the prestihatitator because it's currently summer so I don't want to go into the forest with the Totally Normal Trees because I don't want to risk them burning down, or burning me down. I have everything else. And I was focusing more on rebuilding my base after the Deerclops destroyed it in the last day of the first Winter.

I had N-Tools enabled when I took the Screenshot because I was testing mod stuff. I don't use it in-game because cheating in any way completely ruins the game for me.

EDIT: You went all out on that description, didn't you? You did a pretty good job describing your motivation for base design, though. It seems most people's desire to build a massive main base is due to the proximity requirement for prototyping. If just building a machine allows prototyping on it regardless of your position...then you have no real need to turtle, do you?

So, you pretty much chose a main base, with some mini-bases. I added a "no RoG DLC" option so you can change your RoG decision.

I do have and only use the DLC, though. But thank you on behalf of those who don't have it.

I just voted a random thing for vanilla since I never use it and I have to put a vote on both.

Central base with a fire pit nearby for hound waves, one inside my cave entrance for worm waves, and one by the walrus hunting camp.

The last one I'll only visit once in a game. Otherwise I bring everything I need to me.

My general base construction hasn't changed much with the addition of the DLC. I always built up a main base with several outposts, one for hunting the MacTusk hunting party, others near resources. With RoG, I still have the main base, MacTusk hunting den and usually a wide open area for when the Dragonfly comes. I have increased the number of tooth trap fields from 1 or 2 to 3 or sometimes up to 5.

The main difference for me is in my tooth trap field. I used to build a "Fortress of Solitude" with a large field out front and traps in the hallway in case hounds made it past the field. With the addition of the Bearger, my first attempt at this was quickly knocked down PDQ!! So I decided on a field with a fire and endothermic firepit in the middle. Once I kill a couple Fireflies I build the fireproof chest nearby and stock it with teeth and armor.

With vanilla I never really got very far with base making as I played Adventure Mode almost non-stop.

With the DLC I'm finding sandbox more fun though, and I make a main base where I keep most of my resources, with smaller bases for walrus hunting, and in the desert so that I can survive the heat while collecting cactus flowers and meat.

I've really tended to build one massive main base that I used for Fall/Winter/Spring Seasons and then one bare minimum base (literally all it has is an endothermic fire pit, 5 drying racks, a crock pot, 2 chests and an Ice Box) that I go to for summer.  I also have one "base" that is on a road out of my main base.  This base is only a fire pit with some logs around and a dark sword.  It literally has the sole purpose of being my Deerclops raid camp.  As I can just run around the fire pit and fight off Deerclops.

However, my map only gave me one MacTusk camp, and it is very far away, so I may invest in a small camp there with 3 or 4 spider dens around it that I go to when wanting to hunt him (I am playing as Webber, which is why I use spiders and not pigs)

I usually build one massive base, preferably near to at least one of those: Beefalo, Swamp, Pig King, Cave entrance or MacTusk. But, when one of those are waaaay too far from my base, i build a firepit and an ice box, if i have spare gears.

Sometimes i make a kind of storage base on the cave so i don't have to move my ruins craftables around, risking to forget one or another at the time of crafting. On cave bases, i usually build near either near of the ruins entrance or near slurtle mounds.

My strategy when the DLC was released didn't changed much. The only thing i started doing diferent was to put ice flingomatics everywhere and the endothermic firepit right beside my normal firepit.

Also yeah. Building that base around the Pig King/Glommer statue 'set piece' area. It's a mainstay of mine now. Even if it's an isolated arm of the map. I find the deciduous zones to be entirely agreeable. Just avoid building too close to the sinkhole unless you don't mind fighting a half dozen bats every single night.
