Again, because of time problems. And because DS has to be different and just an option for multiplayer in the menu would be too mainstream.

Time problems? Please....

Mainstream? Don't Starve also has an options menu and a quit button. Your point? :3

Keeping something out of the mainstream is one thing, but adding fresh layers of annoying as a pretext to something that could, also, just be full of annoying, is something else entirely, Dwer.

Listen. If there is a server, and you log in in the middle of the night, what would happen? Also, you could cheat the game by not logging in for the entire duration of a season or you could log out if you are in danger and let the other players deal with it.

It's not that I like the door thing, but that is an option to solve this problems.

Vote options would help fix a lot of this. Also, it should take a little while for you to disconnect, meaning that you'll likely die, then get disconnected if you try to DC in the middle of battle.

I think that when we spawn in multiplayer, rather then having an intro from Maxwell, all the players come out from Wilsons door. I do not think we should have to craft the door to access multiplayer, it would just be unnecessary.

I feel like a main menu button is awesome, and should be implemented.

However, I don't want to just stare at these unplayed SP save slots that I dumped hours into. Though the crafting to the door in SP isn't needed, I feel like it would be nice to connect my SP and MP files. If my internet decides to hang itself up because of a lightening storm, I want to say, " Darn. Well I can still go do things as Maxwell since he is here and waiting on me." I think it should feel like a natural connection between SP and MP files, instead of "Ugh. I can't play MP right now. Which one of these SP files to I want to play? You know, its just not as fun when I think about it. I had lots of chores to do and I really don't want to mess with those right now."

It doesn't MATTER if it's simple to make or not, Dwer. Try getting all that stuff on day one. You can't, I promise you that.

Not to mention, it's even more pointless when you consider that people will just DebugSpawn in the materials or the portal itself when they get bored of it. Why not just scrap it entirely and save a lot of stupid bother?!

This logic seems very flawed to me, and sounds a lot like what is the point of having anything in this game if the player can just debug spawn it? There are a ton of problems that I have faced during my time playing this game and I could have solved almost all of them by a quick debugspawn but I don't do that and I don't think it is reasonable to assume people will have more of a tendency to debug spawn the door than anything else in game. I personally would not like the option of being part of multiplayer without having to put some effort into it.

This logic is also flawed. What, we have to earn the right to play multiplayer?

I didn't say that we have to, merely that I would like to. And sorry if any part of my comment came across as being a jerk, I am just trying to understand where you are coming.

The logic of where I am coming from, is that the idea of having to make a portal to join multiplayer is only convenient if you're already late-game, and can easily spare the resources required to make one of these. This is inconvenient for a new player, really. Who is already going to be trying to get all set up to not starve for a day or two, nevermind making a portal to join multiplayer. Also, let's say, that I either don't know about console commands, or don't want to use them. What happens if I can't find spiders, because they're all on the complete other side of the map? Then i'm gonna be in for a lot of frustrating, tedious searching.

My bottom line on this is that it's simply not a good idea. Mutliplayer is a convenience thing, not some reward that you have to earn by building something. May I just say that if they add a menu AND the portal, practically nobody is going to want to build the portal, and will just go straight to the menu.

If they add portal assets (for spawning the players or something similar) it would probably be trivial to make a mod which adds an in-game portal for that purpose, if people actually wanted it.

I personally would very much so prefer a menu for it.

Ok, I understand, what you are saying makes a fair amount of sense. I would still prefer an option for the door though.

Okay, we have a really good debate going here. Keep it up. But, I'm wondering if the door will actually exist in the game and what role it would play. @The Letter W said that it could be a multiplayer Adventure Mode, which seems very plausible.

Here's my 2 cents on this debate: I know it would be annoying and unnecessary to have to craft the door and then connect through there, but it would only take VERY little resources like @DwerBomb said. And it would allow you to save more space, because you could travel between multiplayer and singleplayer in one save file. And isn't the point of Don't Starve to be difficult, and challenge you, and grind on your nerves sometimes? Well, I think having to make the door would do that very well. It makes more sense lore-wise, and of course, who doesn't want a huge badass door in their base?
