if Together will launch chat needed.

Recommended Posts

MAYBE it should be more like it would be irl. By that I mean you can only hear another player (and by hear I also mean see what the other player writes in the chat, that should appear above the player as when you examine things) if he is near you. But still a chat is needed.

My suggestion in another thread was to leave things how they are. As things are now, when we inspect something for example our character will say something in a musical tone with text above their heads. The same can be in multiplayer when we want to say something to another player.

A toggle to show/hide a chat log is a good idea, will keep the screen clutter free. There needs to be a filter and also an anti spam system to stop trolls from spamming unnecessary comments over and over. I'll go into this more in a separate thread, after some clarification.

A good voice command system would be appreciated. What if you need help because you can see 20 spiders coming but your friends can't and you're getting swarmed? I doubt you'll have time to type out a response. Before dying.

I think you shouldn´t able to contact players that are far away. Not very realistic. And also, it would make it more of a challenge, you can get lost from your group.

I am afraid if Klei implements a too restrictive communication system, people will just speak on Skype or use the Steam voice chat while playing Don't Starve with their friends (I would do that), which would make the ingame chat system rather useless. I think the simpler the better. If it's not an ingame voice chat, at least make it so that anyone can see what you write wherever they are (or at least give a ''shouting'' option). It might be less realistic, but it is also less restrictive and would be used by most of the players.

Edit: I think that any chat system will really be only for desperate cases where a player doesn't have a headset or something, because it is really tedious to constantly chat while playing, since you have to constantly stop doing what you are doing to write something and make sure there is no threat around. Early game, every minute counts and you don't want to lose half of your day telling your friends what to do next. I honestly think the ingame chat system will be used a lot less than any other voice chat system, unless it is an ingame voice chat system.

I'll probably use the steam chat anyway.

Exactly my point.

It's just a matter of opinion, but this is (at least for me) not an ''Ultima Online'' RPG kind of game. It's a survival game, and I think that any too restrictive chat system will be totally unused by 95% of the players, because it's just simpler and more efficient to use other voice chat systems.

Hah, that's actually really awesome! Imagine playing with your 3 other friends on the same map and just saying "Ok guys, it's time to start exploring. Meet back at this exact point x days later, at noon." Oh, the possibilities multiplayer could bring are so simple yet so fun.

I rather chat be restricted. If people want to cheat and use Skype or Steam, that´s their choice. I really don´t want to be having a conversation with someone whose up in the surface while I´m in a cave, just unrealistic.

Also, this is awesome :

It's not a matter of cheating, it's a matter of playing with your friends and coordinating. Imagine the first days, you are 4 walking randomly gathering some stuff, but you all need to stop every 3 seconds to say ''Come this way!'' , ''No, I saw a pig this way, come!'' , ''No, I saw poop, beefalos are this way''. Sure, it could be interesting the first time, but on the long run, it will get boring quickly in my opinion.

Also, if I end up being in the caves while my friends are on the surface, I will feel just as lonely as if I play on single player, so I would prefer at the very least to be able to talk to them about anything (not necessarily game related) on voice chat. The same is true we are just split up on the surface. Again, not a matter of cheating, just a matter of making the multiplayer playthrough enjoyable.

Edit: I am not against any of the suggestions here, I was just pointing out that the more it is complicated and restrictive, the less it is going to be used, at least in the long run, since it is not a RPG. The communication system is a convenience, it's a tool, not a feature that should have an impact on the game. Again, that's my opinion and it is well within your rights to disagree! I will still love you as much! =)

I think not.

Klei knows that every good multiplayer has a very practical chat where you can write anything.

I didn't say there should be none, but rather that it should be simple, e.g. you write something in the chat, everyone sees what you wrote in a log that you can scroll up or down. There is no need (in my opinion) to implement a complex chat system with dialogue only above your character head that can only be seen if you are 2 inches away from your friends (reminds me of Ultima Online, which is a pretty old online RPG game). That would be restrictive, whereas a chat system is meant to be used to communicate with the other players if you can't use other communication systems (like voice chat).
