chrismilk
Just picked up this game and first playthrough....Died to a spider.... I'm guessing this is not a combat orentied game? Deacon_Blue
There's plenty of combat. That doesn't mean you should do it first. In fact, you never have to fight anything if you don't want to. Are there zones that new players are suppose to avoid? Like in skyrim? Well, at least you died to a monster. I think I was killed by a bee on my first playthrough. XD (And then I was killed off for good by my own hallucination later) Combat is a viable option, but it's not often necessary. Figuring out when it's best to fight things is a significant part of the game. I'd suggest avoiding caves until you've mastered surviving on the surface. 23rd
I would avoid swamps until you get your foot in the game. Sometimes when you're traveling through forests you'll see a lot of spider nests, I'd avoid those forests. BaconAndRibs
You should stay mostly around grass area for the first few days. Once you get used to the game more, you'll learn how to make better tools for combat. Stay away from spider nests and swampy areas. Don't attack any creatures until later or you'll just end up dead. Rosten
The swamp is like the jungle in terraria, if you don't know what youre doing, it will destroy you no matter your gear, but once you do its pretty easy to survive in Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/31452-died-on-day-1/#findComment-413508 Share on other sites
GuGonce
The game have a lot of combat. As you play ,you will get used to some common enemies attack patterns so it will be easy to do it even on day 1. But for now,i would recommend to stay away from fights until you have some kind of protection. Also,as said by others, stay away from the swamp. But if you really want to see what is there, don't stop running or something will attack you. LadyD
Don't Starve is kind of uncompromising learning curve. You learn what not to do pretty fast.I advise not hitting anything that didn't hit you first. Even then running is always a great option. Lots of monsters give up and stop following you after a while. Hitting back tends to make them call all their friends in to the fight. (Stupid frogs). BarovSoap
Unlike LadyD, I advise you to hit everything and learn what is good to eat. Frogs are not good to eat. Pigmen ARE good to eat, but don't hit you. Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/31452-died-on-day-1/#findComment-413550 Share on other sites
SamLogan
Kill spiders is so easy, just use a trap. I'm guessing this is not a combat orentied game? In Terraria with adamantite armor the swap really can't kill you unless you leave the game unpaused forever. But in the swap a tentacle will just destroy you almost instantly even with some armor. the truthseeker
I'm in the camp that I learned by dying multiple times and figured out what to do, so should you. That written I too will, echo two things to you: (At least until you do number 2: ) Stay OUT of the swamps (or at the least do NOT stop if going through there, even even if it's to pick up something tempting looking on the ground; something dangerous killed these tough creatures compared to unarmored you, right?) Combat requires you to craft weapons and armor requiring a crafting machine of some kind (yes you can craft another armor before this which is a band-aid compared to what is immediately around you.) Three items are needed--Two are common, and one is not (immediately) so. If you need 4, 4 and 1 of those items, you found what I am mentioning.Other tactics and methods are best left to a more...veteran player. We don't wan't "improvised weapons" and "kiting tips" to kill our unarmored friend here, do we? Good luck chrismilk, and Don't Starve! Greig91
I would avoid swamps until you get your foot in the game. Sometimes when you're traveling through forests you'll see a lot of spider nests, I'd avoid those forests. You can burn those down and kill a lot of the spiders if you have to. Personally I'd never do that in sandbox as it's a bit of a waste of good reasources, but it's an option lol.
