This clearly is a big middle finger at Sony for forcing them to add trophies when they have publicly stated that they didn't want them. The item you have to build is a trophy itself which requires a lot of material (Gears for example have limited amount on the entire map) and when you use it, a teeny tiny firework pops out of it and it says on screen, "I feel so accomplished!"

 

 

 

That one little firework burst and the line...reminded me of a poor playthrough of a  Super Mario game...

 

 

But people who play a game just to show others they got all completion only...well...

 

it's one of the problems I have with some consolers, Even Steam players don't do this solely for the games they buy and Valve doesn't make it mandatory on their games.

Well, buckled down and got through all eight pages. Actually, got a LOT better around page 4.

 

Still, people choose to be ignorant more often than not. This person reveals what others should have figured out if they spent a few minutes paying attention rather than being "included in the rant":

I can confirm for '...and despair!' that the Accomploshrine only needs to be used and not opened 725 times. So it's much easier than some were expecting. That comes out to opening it 29 times and takes just over 20 minutes.

i was going to list a bunch of satirical replies for the 8 pages I decided to go through, but decided it could come off too mean, and decided to list this above blunt reply instead. 

 

 

But fear not, there still are those who "just don't get it" overall either:

Publishers don't make platform decisions based on what their achievements are going to be. PS4 is the market they wanted to tap for this game, and it's by far a better platform than Wii U for what they wanted (closest-aligned to PC demographic, where the game was originally released, influx of indie support, etc.). Why would they turn down potentially millions of dollars of revenue because they "hate" trophies? Smarter just to release any old trophy set and then roll in money.

This is not a middle finger to players. If anything, it's a middle finger to trophy/achievement hunters, which, if we're being honest with ourselves, are a small minority of game players in general. If they do hate trophies as people claim, then it makes sense that they would try to shaft trophy hunters for focusing on an arbitrary, tacked-on element of the game instead of the game itself, to teach them a lesson, as a comment on the stupidity of trophies as a concept, or for any such reason.

In reality, this is an open-ended, infinitely playable game. It's one of those games that you keep coming back to and spending time in, same concept as Animal Crossing (although obviously a completely different genre). You're not meant to grind mechanically for hours for some arbitrary goal; you're meant to keep playing it because it's interesting and entertaining. That's why they didn't want to include specific goal trophies. They want players to be able to play however they want and still get rewarded.

 

 

Sorry, but no. It's still a big middle finger to players. Also, the game is about grinding mechanically. So is Animal Crossing and all those other infinitely playable games. You're meant to grind the same patterns for every in-game "day" in order to accomplish your arbitrary goals. In Animal Crossing, you grind the same activities every day to earn bells to pay off your house loan so you can get a bigger house and start paying off that loan. In The Sims, you grind making your Sims happy so they can make more money at work so you can buy nicer things to make them happy with. And in this game, you grind collecting supplies every day so you can not die.

If they wanted players to be able to play however they want, maybe they should have made a game that actually allows for multiple playstyles instead of one where it must be played the same way constantly or you fail. If you aren't constantly grinding for resources, what happens to you? ...Ah yes, that's right, you die and have to start over. You have to play the way they tell you, you don't get to play however you want.

You also missed the point I was making about going to Wii U instead so badly that I'm not even going to reply to that bit.

That's debatable. I only have four trophies thus far and I have put over 12 hours into the game. I should have 6 trophies now but my latest game is still going and so they only will unlock when I die out [me: or escape to a new world]. I have uncovered a ton of ground and have still yet to find the Adventure Mode door. And from what i'm hearing, AM is no joke either.

So for those playing under the impression that this will be a quick 100%, please adjust your expectations. Regardless, it's all moot to me. I'm having so much fun with the game I couldn't care less about the trophies at the moment.

While I completely agree with your sentiments regarding the lack of ps4 title line up for day1 console launch, and I can respect this sort of game isn't your cup of tea, but you simply CANNOT classify Don't Starve as a Facebook game.

I despise Facebook games and never intend to touch it myself, because all of them are essentially money lures, hiding behind cutesy graphics. frequently those games have very little story whatsoever, let alone any in-depth game mechanics.

if you cared to read some more posts in this forum, or checkout some advanced Don't Stave gameplay video, you'll realise that there's a LOT more to it than a "gather this, combine that, then make those" simple survival game. nearly EVERYTHING you do will result in consequences, sometimes quite dire and life threatening. but there's plenty of effective strategies that you gotta employ to basically stay alive. most of all, the game would never try solicit for real money or plague you and your friends with notifications. so how is this a Facebook game?

I would say this game is a cross between Minecraft and Demon's/Dark souls. you gather resources and evolve your base as per Minecraft, but your life depends on learning the environment and being calculated and careful with your action like Demon's/Dark souls. but it's wrapped in Tim Burton-esque graphics.

in summary, pleaes don't confuse yourself with indie games as Facebook games. they're different genres altogether!

 

So in conclusion, welcome PS4 players! And to those who decided to quit over this Trophy thing and have decided to never give the game itself a chance...what in the world are you reading this for?!

I'd like to start off by saying I'm absolutely hooked on this game.

I saw it was free for download on my PS4 Playstation Plus membership so I figured, why not? Confusing and difficult at first, but I am a sucker for a challenge, and before I knew it I had sunk several hours into the game. Here I am a few days later, still doing so.

 

Regarding the topic at hand. I stumbled upon this thread via searching and subsequently followed the OP link. I found the PS Trophies thread to be both hilarious and infuriating. It makes me ashamed to be a console gamer. I am a pretty casual gamer, and while I like earning trophies, I am not a "trophy hunter." With that being said, part of me feels that Klei could have went about the PS4 trophies in a better way. I understand they were trying to prove a point, but this game has literally BOATloads of ways to implement trophies. It doesn't require railroading players either, it could be more general acheivements (e.g. surviving your first winter, kill your first monster, death by frog (yes, that happened to me)). You can't tell me it didn't feel great to survive your first winter and you weren't feeling pretty accomplished. I don't see harm in rewarding a trophy to go along with that feeling. There are lots of moments like that in Don't Starve.

 

Of course, I haven't survived my first winter yet...so back to scouring the land for a gear to make an Ice Box with the precious little time I have left.

hmm you ought to go back and read some of the old discussions bothe pre and post beta concerning trophy/experience based upgrades/other leveling systems and why the dev's chose not to use that style in this game.

 

While i agree that trophies could be implemented in a better way, that was never part of the game development plan.

 

the reasoning goes like this.

"leveling" locks the player into an achievement pattern that once a character reaches level max, the player gets bored.

"upgrades" do the same.

"questing" also give a false sense of completion.(same as trophy system)

 

The development team, intended to and did make the game almost completely player goal driven rather than, achievement system goal driven. Trophies of any type or implementation are an achievement system, and rather than try to completely overhaul the game to accept something that was never part of the intended game design, they made it into a joke. The view from the dev team was that experience, upgrade systems, and even things like the trophy system were what made a game "grindy", and this with few exceptions is true.(the only game i know of that didn't yield this feel with an experience/upgrade system has gone offline over 5 years ago)

 

oh and it wouldn't surprise me a bit if you continued to crank that handle for 72000 more times that you hit another trophy lol, but i think someone out there has tried that already.

 

anyway in short that is why, not that i'm an official spokesman or anything. I much prefer the feel of Don't Starve left with player driven goals, i think you'll understand after the first 100 hours of the game.

I never said I disagreed with it, or didn't understand it. All I said was there are lots of opportunities to offer trophies without changing the basis of the game. So far it seems like a great game and I'm enjoying it, whatever the Dev's choices, I support them.

 

The only thing that struck me about what you said..."grindy." I've only been playing Don't Starve for 4 days or so, but if you don't think this is a grindy game...come on.

Yeah, this game is definitely grindy. I agree that they could have gone about the trophy system in a better way, but I also wouldn't want to see any "real" achievements in the vein of surviving this or crafting that or killing whatever; it's my opinion that achievements like that could unintentionally lock a player into a complacent way of thinking about how they should be playing. Klei could have made their point by making every single trophy death related. You died to a bee, trophy! You died to your own boomerang, trophy! You died to Charlie, here's a trophy called The Basics Are Too Hard!

Personally I'd like an impossible-to-complete trophy named something like "ultidiculos" (portmanteau of ultimate and ridiculous) which literally says "it's impossible to get" and see what the players' reactions are.

It's pretty silly to hate on a game because on Trophy is tedious. I don't think it has anything to do with any of us playing better or worse than these folks, it's more about them getting upset over something completely optional which does not affect the gameplay in any way whatsoever.
