Ancient Guardian Origins?

Recommended Posts

Maxwell says that the Ancient Guardian was changed by nightmare fuel, but what was it originally?

Based on its fur, general body shape, and feet, I'd say that it could have actually been a Chester originally. The fact that a chest spawns when it dies supports this idea.

On the other hand, everything in the ruins was apparently there before anything on the surface was created. It also wouldn't make much sense for Chester to be a guardian of anything.

What do you guys think?

NO SENSE FOR CHESTER TO BE A GUARDIAN OF ANYTHING?!?!?!

Well, Chester is our beloved, kind overlord who watches our every movement and protects us all from the dangers of the world. Talk to our friend @the truthseeker for more information on Our Fuzziness.

..this is actually kind of brilliant.

I've always figured everything down there, if filtered to look like it did before the fall of whatever civilization inhabited the place, would have heavy Mesoamerican influence, or at least something that could be described as tribal. Perhaps a once benevolent figure that the ancients revered as a god, indirectly affected by the heavy pollution in the Ruins caused by overuse of Nightmare Fuel?

Think about it.  The Guardian doesn't have any abilities other than that of a rhino.  And Maxwell smokes a lot.  Maybe it's brain cancer.

True, but think about , the shadow monsters MADE from the stuff can only bite you and teleport when damaged. It is clearly the model for one of the robots that Maxwell references as his creations means he must have known it was down there and seen it, and probably watched it become what it is when the player encounters it.

I say we just bring this pony full circle and throw in the theory that Don't Starve is just one of JoeW's hazy afternoon pipe fantasies.

Still don't know how your getting that connection.  The Guardian can't teleport and is a solid fuzzy beast.  The robo-rhino was based off of him ... but that has no connection to nightmare fuel.

My point was, Maxwell knew about it, and probably saw how it came to be considering he was most likely on the throne at the time  so he would KNOW nightmare fuel made it. Also, about the teleporting and being solid, those are the only thing differentiating it from sanity monsters (unless of course you want to nitpick and say the fact it is a GIANT RHINO, but besides that...)

Maxwell says that, but I find it's just one of the harder theories to believe.  Nightmare fuel seems like this rather evil corruptive substance yet the Guardian doesn't seem to reflect that visually or physically.  It's a creature that doesn't have an insanity aura and drop's non-monster meat.

There is probably a piece to this puzzle that's missing.

Well, think about it, it has a chest inside it and functions normally...

We love and obey you our Overlord!

Oh, and the Nightmare Fuel most likely just made the Guardian chargingly-lethal-at-everything insane but didn't warp him (much.)

Yeah, he was probably an Ancient Guardian BEFORE the nightmare fuel got to him, he might've just been a rhinoceros. Or maybe he was the last of his kind and he was just related to the rhinoceros. Or maybe, considering what nightmare fuel can do, he might've been something COMPLETELY different and unrelated to what he is now.
