Complete lack of resources makes this game impossible

Recommended Posts

Beyond that, the wiki is your friend. You'd be wise to thumb through it and count up the amount of basic resources you'll need for your Day 20 base. Excluding daily consumption, you shouldn't need more than 120 Grass, 80 Rocks, 80 Logs, 40 Twigs, 40 Manure, 30 Charcoal, 10 Gold Nuggets and as many flowers as you chance upon (for Rot). A Fire Pit, a Science Machine, an Alchemy Engine, a handful of chests and a few Crock Pots will more than suffice. Drying Racks a plus.

Good luck. This game isn't particularly cruel once you know what to look for.

All the other stuff was really cool and spot on. However, (ironically) I don't recommend a new player general browsing of the DS wiki (short of the links used as to how to learn the fundamentals from before if the player is having problems.) If the user is "instructed" in everything via the wiki, then they won't learn how to do it themselves and will just have "learned to copy" a process.

Oh, and the whole "mystery of discovery and finding new things to new players not being ruined" thing too.

And the game is exceptionally cruel. it will lure you into a false sense of security, then strike! (Okay...Just don't get lazy and reckless ever as well  everybody ;)

Truthfully, the wiki is the most efficient way to seek information. I won't say you're off-base: it may spoil some of the magic, but if the choice is between doing some research or getting fed up enough to quit the game, I say check the wiki.

The main reason I tabbed through the wiki when I was new was to learn the requirements for each structure and crock recipe without losing precious game time, which is relatively harmless compared to how deep the wiki really goes. Use at your discretion; it's your run of the game, and there are worse ways to ruin the experience.

No one here can stop you.

In my experience, the game is as follows:

Day 1 -- Don't Starve

Day 21 -- Don't Freeze

Day 41 -- Don't Be Stupid

YMMV

Of course if about to permanently rage-quit, and the tips we gave didn't help enough (first,) then get help indeed.

And even now, I keep a perma-tab in the background with the crock pot recipes if I need to double-check that ingredient listing for x again.

And *sigh* I *Really* need to remember the DBS (Don't be Stupid) more often....

Remember, the most dangerous enemy of all is an invisible mob called boredom that grows stronger as the days go by.

Him and the giant one-eyed rooster named "cockiness" team up all too often to lead people to their deaths.

I find that 99% of the time I start out on a new game on default settings, there will always be some kind of grassland biome nearby with a few twigs, bushes and flint. I'm almost inclined to believe the game is programmed that way to give your character a kick-start so you can at least get some basic equipment before wandering out further.

I've never encountered a game where flint and seeds are impossible to find. Seeds in particular occur way too often in my game with the birds always dropping them near around my character.

The only solution I can offer is to start a new game until you get a fairly decent generated world. Some of the maps can be very oddly generated on their own and I've had to restart more than once when I really didn't want to run for 2 days just to get from Resource Point A to Resource Point B.

And welcome to the boards Pomegranate! I'll do my best not to nom your seeds! :p

Not to mention curiousity, he is the worst guy of them all, I used up hundreds of meat effigy's fighting him, all dead's were in cave.

Boredom is the most terrifying enemy of all, it can make you grab potato chips and soda and get too fat to keep playing, or make you play a different game entirely. Doesn't even give any good drops!

Well. You my friend are the greatest troll in history.

Its a challenge TO NOT find some flint on the first 2 minutes of the game. You should see a considerable amount of carrots everywhere when you first spawn. Congrats if you can make a farm on day 3, it usually takes me 20 days.

If you put max resources on and are not seeing a berry bush every 3 steps.... You need to report it because that is the most ludicrous glitch ive heard of by far.

Hey, sometimes it takes 5 minutes if that grasslands doesn't have a flint...

that's about it.

If anyone else has problems starting out, please read post #25 in this thread. FenixStryk provided some good info for you.

What a seriously snarky thread!  He was just a frustrated new player.  Been there.  Most of us have.  Why not just give him the info he needs with a little encouragement?  This behavior makes everyone in the forums look bad and can turn people off the game itself.
