Willow - day 1000 attempt

Recommended Posts

Ok, so i wanted to set a goal to help my game play, and so i decided why not day 1000? the initial goal was day 500 but 1000 is really rare on the forums w/o mods.

Also i wanted to play a character that is not normally played by me, that didn't have major drawbacks, but also didn't have major bonuses, so i closed my eyes and hit the arrow buttons as fast as i could and ended up with willow.

I'm going to chronicle the game action and post it, along with some pictures. Now i've been on the forums for a while and have been playing on and off since beta, but hands down i am not the most expert person tactic wise, or the best at kiting or organisation or anything. I'm really not very familiar with caves, and have never been to the ruins, and still have no idea how to deal with worms really.

Having said that think i'll post a basic play by play every few game days, day 1-20 will be frequent, and then after that most likely every 5 to 10 game days.

i fully expect to last till maybe day 200. Also, due to the nature of the thread, i put it in general discussion (not a roleplay, more survival chronicle, with tips ideas and thoughts added, but by no means a real guide)

Ok, had a couple of false starts so far, one was really bad, day 10 and have a full base in my pack already , think i got the hang of willow now though.

:TACTICS:

1. I've been trying to pick more carrots than berries cause of the time the pick animation uses, and winter doesn't worry me in the least, as i've already found beefalo.

2. I don't pick every grass or twig i come across, usually around about 20 of each i stop, scouting fast is important.

3. I try to either use a tool all the way up, or throw it down as i scout the world for more room in my pack, this leaves a litter of tools all over the world which later can be helpful.

4. Qued base... Having the basics for almost a complete base in the que is quite handy, it allows the player to use up inventory stash and keep it on board at the same time so that once "the spot" is found it can be setup as fast as you can click.

5. Leaving full bags of goodies laying around for later is great, especially early in the game, doesn't cost much to make a backpack, and doesn't waste exploration effort by passing up resources, just make to drop them close to the "center" of the map or some other convenient place you can come get them later, after all later on bug out bags are nice, and these will be waiting.

6. Carrots berries and seeds really come in handy for exploring, this is so basic of a thing, but i used to not pick carrots trying to save them for winter, but berries are better for that in my opinion, because you can rely on them being visable on the map. Anyhow all veggie no cook diet for exploring.... excellent, pick flowers for sanity.

7. it helps to not ever wear a backpack if possible make them leave them on the ground and just add loot. Wear armor instead.

epic fail again... went koalafant hunting day 22 last try and forgot to put my armor on, as i was attacking i was like doh no armor, and i had lower hp and got one shotted, stupid *sigh* so hence tactic #7

Anyhow, new map. I'm probably going to edge a few maps before i settle in another world, no point in playing a sucky map for 1000 game days

I'm on about day 270 or so, already have top-tier items and 2 houndius shootius turrets, a bunch of

pigs and a whole herd of rock lobsters.

Nothing is dangerous past that point. If anything kills you on your journey to 1,000 days, it's going to be boredom.

And it probably will.

Honestly, 1000 days is a goal i don't like, because by then, the game isn't hard, it just gets boring, by then you've made a huge base, explored the ruins, conquered deerclops, what else is there to do other then sit and wait for day 1000?

Eat all the jerky.

well tbh i kinda expect to get bored after a while, but there are a lot of things i'd like to do... i want 4 traps on every rabbit hole in the world, i want a pig house for every frog pond, a bunny hutch for every mosquito pond. i want a underground city, and a decent sized camp near every cave for starters. In the mean time hopefully the thread will also help others gain knowledge about the game.

My only recommendation after you establish your base would be to go to sleep at the crack of Dusk every single time without hesitation, no doubt about it, no questions asked, really really. Spend the last 30 seconds of daylight preparing for it if you have to. Your biggest obstacle is 8 minute real-time days; cutting those days down as small as you can will benefit you immensely in the long run because it will minimize boredom. Boredom inflicting stupidity upon you will by far be your most likely cause of death.

In other words: Why do today what can be done tomorrow?

I'm at day 510 with Wendy now. But I have to say, you all are WAY more adventurous early on. I don't fight anything that fights back except spiders until I have the world completely mapped out (I'll take on a Treeguard fairly early if I have tooth traps).

From day 30 on there's a sort of natural "work week"

- hound day (cleanup and build up traps after)

- 2.5 to 3 days of exploring or "missions"

- 1 or 2 days of harvest, base-building and food prep at home, waiting on hounds

After the map is filled in, my mid week "missions" switch to specific things: get a bee farm, get a beefalo horn, trap up the mactusk base, build a bug-out base, hunt a koalafant, go insane to harvest beard hair, explore a cave, etc.

Whether successful or not, I always head home after 2.5 days out. If you push it, every now and then, the hounds come early and usually right as night falls and you're nearing the end of your food and supplies after several days out. Not good.

i think i've been cursed just for making this thread, spent all day trying to get a world started, and haven't gotten past day 25 in any of them, keep getting kill by stupid stuff. oh well i'll post something whenever i get past first winter with willow.

i think i've been cursed just for making this thread, spent all day trying to get a world started, and haven't gotten past day 25 in any of them, keep getting kill by stupid stuff. oh well i'll post something whenever i get past first winter with willow.

You too? i got the DS Yips.

Day 1-3

setup a small base, i found a fast pig guardian setpiece, touchstone, rocks, and small grass biome really quick on day 1, have been collecting basics for a mini base in case winter comes early, i've been researching and prototyping strutures and equipment.:RL took a family break cause my daughter peed all over her bed, the bunk bead ladder floor blankets, and herself:

Day ?

What day am i on now oh still on day 3 built an alchemy machine, placed another chest, and made a helmet, and backpack.

Day 4

I've got all the survival basics, still need a bugnet though, but no spiders close, time to explore the map. I hope there are even better locations that the one i spawned near, but i have this bad feeling. ok so i didn't get far on day 4, i ended up digging a few things, and burning a few trees, then got the bright idea that it might be nice to have all the base basics waiting for when i got back, and nicely right next to the touchstone as well.

Day 5

cooked some food, killed a beehive, stabbed a frog, made honey nugetts. left the flower i picked behind to rot, and at dusk et off for adventure again, and found another nice patch of rock not very far away.

Day 6

by morning i had a full stack of rock, but ran out of twigs, spent most of the day digging up whatever i could in the area(dig animation is faster than pick, at least it feels like it cause you get more), so i headed back for camp, cause i figured the twigs i planted should be sprouting soon, got back and no twigs had sprouted, but i was hungry and there so i made some more food, checked the traps and set a few more out. Also dropped some random odds and ends off in the chest, and made a stack of stone blocks.

Day 7

in the morning the twigs sprouted, and i'm back in business. at this point i need to get far enough away from base that i don't come back for a while....early day 7 just south of the previous rocky biome i came across, the chess pieces and a mctusk sinkhole, wow what luck. So the oppotuinist that i am decided to wipe out the chess pieces, and let the rhino thingy bash all the marble pieces apart for me! sweet, but not i gotta drop this stuff off at .....base?.... was meant to be a temporary camp...

Day 8

i spent the day cooking, and dropping stuff off, i also used the  "quick chop menthod"(a game code exploit) to quickly chop a few trees accidentally spawning a treeguard in the process, so i finished chopping trees then picked up enough pinecones to passify him, took him to the nearby wasteland, and planted enough for him to setle down, then i burnt the pinecones, and collected the ash, and went back to what i was doing, only to realise in the worst way that my sanity was too low, i burnt the crap out of most of the wood, still ahving enough in the stash for the purpose i intended i wasn't worried, went back to camp "base" and built a few more chests.

Day 9

What a wasted day! well maybe i got somethin done, cooking, chopped some charcoal, did "Basey" things anyway, end of day nine i attempt to explore again.

Day 10

found another mctusk sinkhole. Continued to explore the rocky savannah, by morning of day 9, i was done edging it, killed a tier 2 spiders nest along the way.

Day 11

In the morning i headed back to camp, it irked me that i couldn't net the firely i saw even though i had the materials in my pack, midday hounds came, i was overprepared. I left to explore shortly after that, not long after dusk i came across a beefalo hat setpiece, i will probably die before day 20 now, this is too good of luck. That night lands me in the swamp area.... i don't stop

Day 12

I finish edging the swampy area, then exit right into the killer bee area, *sigh*, at least i had the helmet on, i didn't stop running, day of 12 was mosly spent in the forest biome, i hammered a few pig houses, and picked what flowers i could while edging the map.

Day 13

I had cross back through the killer bee area and swampy area, and came upon a savanah with beefalo, i dropped my pack and made another, i picked grass and manure for the day and that night killed 2 beefalo, then reorganised my packs, and headed back to camp.

Day 14&15

checked the traps, made food, planted twigs. Planted and fertalized 50 grass(awesome!), and harvested the pig guardian and his berry patch. Also killed my first lure plant, and planted near some frogponds, as the wiki recommends(i have my doubts, i've tried almost everything else with them) i go exploring.

Day 16&17&18

i continue to edge the map, day 17 i return the eastern edge of the map is done, and i need to do some campy stuff, panted more grass, harvested the 50 i planted earlier, harvested twigs, and berries, and planted and fertalised all my collected berries, i now have a huge berry farm. Day 18 i built 2 lighting rods, then hit the road again.

Day 19

i finish edging the map, i really have nothing to do, so i go back to base and try to start making it look more like a base and less like a camp, as so far it's pretty much the best location on the map.

Thought: I may wall off the berries, the pig guardian might become a hazard at some

point. For this i need more rock.

Day 20

Built a few drying racks.... hit the spacebar while planting one and the goofy controls put the thing in the wrong location based on autorun, very wierd. Hounds come, and i and ready, i neatly beat them all to death with my trusty spear.:RL Break i go to sleep.

Days 21&22&23

I built an ice box, chopped a few trees, made some boards, cooked some food, made a few traps, and generally fiddled around, getting prepared to set up some pig houses around a mctusk igloo. Day 22 i set out to build the pig houses, only to realize 1/2 way there that i never prototyped it, when i get back i build the bee box i forgot to build earlier, prototype the pig house. I eat the jerky i was drying as my health was low.

Thought: I need to get into the caves soon preferrably with plenty of premade armor, food, and sanity items(probably jerky in chester), and a few stacks of stone walls and wood walls, for the depths worm deterrant idea i have.

Thought: I think 4 pig houses will be enough for a mctusk village, but it also needs stone wall surroundings. I may need to be careful with my stone supply i'll need to mine more rocks soon to succeed in what i intend.

Night of 23.... i build my current sone supply into rock walls

Day 24

As i am in need of both wood, and rock, i set out for the mosaic biome, and forest biome, i would rather be over prepared than under... also need more pig skin, as i have 2 mc tusk igloos to setup. I mine a few rocks launder them into stacks of wall and cut stone then:RL break, it has started snowing furiously outside, i need to go pick up some tools and such to keep them from getting buried. I brought in the ladder to the bunkbead my daughter peed on and set that in the shower stall and sprayed it down.... continue to explore the mosaic biome as it is night.(i don't like willow's night time sanity drop from chopping or mining in the dark she burns stuff to easy.)

Day 25&26

I finished clearing most of the mosaic area, chopped a few more trees mined a few more rock, did some crafting, and headed back to camp night of 25, only to find the stupid pig guardian went werepig, so i ran around for the rest of the night avoiding him cause my logsuit was at 4%. I now have a massive overabundance of rot, from berries, and flowers. I dropped off some odds and ends, and kill the guardian pig again... I need health, so i refill the dry racks.

Thought: I forgot to do something about the pig guardian... I think i'll dig up the berry bushed when i move the base and put a bunny hutch close and wall them in for a mini meat farm.... there is no point keeping this ugly little squatters base if it's a hazard, and the pig guardian isn't that big of an asset and it will attack walls in were pig mode if no other mobs are present. I had completely forgotten about that.

Day 27

I built more traps for the local rabbits and frog pond, at dusk the hounds start baying... i am not ready, my health is low, i have head gear and logsuit, and penguins are close by, it is my hope that i can use these to my advantage, i need to be able to take more than 4 hits, but have my doubts. The penguins work to my advantage, i take 1 hit from the hounds, and survive to live another day. That night i make 2 marble suits, for the caves.

Thought: enough procrastinating... i need hounds teeth bad, and a tam, and a walking cane, i have to build the mctusk farm as soon as my health is up enough.

Day 28

I burn my wood lot for charcoal, my current amount of drying racks is not enough to keep up with my diminishing health. I check the traps, craft some rope, and at dusk the meat hanging on the old racks is dry so i eat that, filling my hunger and health close to max. I chop the charcoal, and build more dry racks, it is now night. I wait for the heat stone to do its thing, and mentally prepare to set off for the mctusk igloo.

Thoughts: I havn't worn a backpack since i found chester on day 19? i forgot to add that, this really helps keep me alive. Also, in a moment of inspiration, it has occurred to me that willow is the perfect character for a split base operation, so i'm planning to start a double camp with twigs, grass berries, and possibly leafy meat farm in one, and dry racks, bee boxes, and farms in the other, but don't hold me to that. I already have an over flow of twigs, but think my grass farm needs to double in size.

Also, Willow's lighter, at first i didn't like it.... in the summer the light radius is aweful, but in winter has the radius of a summer torch, and once the map is edged, isn't so bad as long as you hit tab once in a while to check where you are at, this frees me up to use all of my twigs and grass at any time, unlike playing other characters, the sanity is still an issue however....hopefully not for long.

Day 29 & 30

In the morning i get close to the McTusk igloo, and happen on 2 hunting parties at the same time, i kill one party off and most of the hounds of the second, then get killed by mctusk's dart, luckily the touchstone is at my base quickly i make another beefalo hat, and grab a marble suit torch and a boomerang, picking up hound drops along the way, as i close in on my death spot i opt for the marble suit. I then kill the second mctusk with the boomerang, and head back to camp, my health sorely suffering. Once back at camp i immediately go for the dry racks, and check the traps, as well as cook some food. This restores my health slightly. I get the Dark Sword out of storage... There are more mctusks around than i knew, this means war! um careful determined war! I decide to put off my mctusk farm till some other time.

Thought: After taking stock of my situation, i need a bird for my birdcage, and need to fertalize the rest of my grass farm, and build an insanity camp near a bunch of rabbits, as well as build more tooth traps with the hound drops that i do have.

Day 31

I intended to go kill spiders, but on my way realised i didn't have flint, or most of my other junk due to the mctusk problem, so i spend the day resetting some traps i picked up, near rabbits instead of frog pond, checking traps, and fertalizing the rest of the grass. I put the dark sword back in storage, it's only at 26% so I'll save that for a sanity control item. I have some local areas still under fog of war, so i head out to explore at dusk. I chop a few trees while i'm out the old way, and then head back as i notice my sanity is at 65 and it needs replentishment, i have enough logs for another logsuit, so i make one when i get back, harvest the dry racks and set 2 crockpots to cook some meatballs.

:Tactic:

I have been using the crtl button to place one item, stick grass log w/e, mostly sticks, on the ground and burn them with a lighter when cold, this i've found has worked extremely well, so i don't really need to carry a heat stone.

Day 32

My health is full enough I'm thinking of reclaiming my gear... perhaps this is a good idea perhaps not. I'm going to pay a visit to the newest igloo i found, as it's closer, then work my way back to where i was carefully. On my way there i notice the penguin ice has some rotten eggs on it, i can no longer go nearthat area, and need to harvest the rotten eggs in the spring do they aren't evil next winter. I get to the first igloo, and kill 2 ice hounds with my trusty spear, upon my return i find that all of my pigskins in chester have been eaten, 16 pig skins down the tubes, this is terrable news, now my farm cannot be setup at this time. I setup the wall around 1 mctusk Igloo anyway to hopefully keep me from being suprised, and start returning to camp.

Day 33

I check the traps, and kill the pig guardian again, meat drops, and then make a meaty stew cheap recipe, 1 monster meat, 1 meat, and 2 morsels. I quick chop my 4 trees in my woodlot, then make some rope, and then some tooth traps. I run out of grass, as I'm doing so... However i now have a modest tooth trap area, and 19 teeth left, i need more grass and wood. My health is at 1/2 so i decide to take the risk to go collect grass and explore the area near the mctusks fully, thinking i can always run away in a bind.

Day 34

A McTusk had spawned at the nearest camp with no hounds, i killed it. I collect some grass and proceed to another igloo and kill that mctusk as well, minimal injury, still a little above 1/2 health. My preciousssss, in plaid. I proceed to the third igloo, and kill most of it's hounds, then run for my dear life as i get close to 1/4 health. Gladly there is a road i can take to give me some quick speed. Also today the great thaw has begun! I get back to camp, and eat all the jerky that has dried obtaining 3/4 health in the process, then check my traps, and hang a few meat, refilling the dry racks. Then drop off some odd and ends and return tot he igloo area. I battle with hounds at the first igloo and my armor breaks, and the battle leaves me with 1/4 health again, i need to chop trees.... so again i return to camp.

Day 35&36

I check traps build a few more tooth traps, cook some food, and chop my trees, day 36 i return to the mctusk area, and kill another mctusk about mid day and finally get the tusk drop. Most Excellent! Now i can make that wonderful infinite mob basher/speed increaser all in one stick! Oh and i collect some more teeth as I'm there, then return to camp. I now have a respectable 32 hounds teeth waiting to become traps. Day 36 rain then snow.

Day 37

Ok so i stupidly lock chester in when i made the stone walls around one of the mctusk igloos, i finally brought the hammer to get him out, then replaced the wall section. summer arrived today, so i continued to explore the rocky savannah picking grass and such along the way. I began building another enclosure around the third mctusk igloo, but hounds started baying so i ran for the tooth traps, just in the nick of time! the puny field i had setup was almost completely sprung leaving 1 hound to deal with which i beat to death with the lighter in hand as it was night.

Day 38&39

:RL, my wife came home with groceries and we got talking about stuff so i forgot what i did on days 38 and 39....

Days 40-44

I got busy clearing tier 3 spider nests, and laundring the monster meat into werepigs into meat and pigskin to replace my 16 pigskin i lost to mctusk #2 earlier. Food supply has been stable for some time now, and I'm now able to hang more than morsels on the dry rack so health is no longer a major issue. I need to get enough skins before winter to start one of the mctusk farms.

Days 44-48

I did some quick base operations, and continued clearing spider nests, with the trap style, and also killed several werepigs. I havn't been doing the daily update because of prolonged adventuring/battles and such. Hounds came again late day 48, they all died to the tooth trap field.

Day 49

In the morning i built all of my hound teeth into tooth traps, doubling the trap field in size, then headed for the mctusk area. I finally get to build a few pig houses in the mctusk #2 enclosure, only 3 of them, then killed the pigs as werepigs.

Day 50

I harvested my twig patch, cooked some food, hung some meat out to dry dropped off some odds and ends, and generally putzed around for a while.:RL.. My 4 year old daughter loves watching me kill the werepigs, lol, she was doing her werepig dance afterwards, i had to stop playing and laugh for a while. "Daddy Daddy, look at me I'm  monster Pig" as she jumps around waving her arms up and down, lol

Day 51

:RL, had a wresting/tickling match with my son who's about to turn 2 in a few weeks..I also killed a few more werepigs, near the pig king then headed back to camp.

Day 52

I begin preparations to go underground for a while, i place close to a full stack of jerky in chester, and load him down with materials for wall sections, and some minor base conveniences, marble suit, a few logsuits and a few helmets, and of course the mining hat.

Day 53-dead

I entered the cave, there were 2 spiders nests at the bottom of the rope, and a nice bunny town close by. I began building a walled area around the rope, closing off the spiders in the process, when it became night again i picked a few carrots to hire the rabbits with, in the process accidently dropping the carrots i tried to pick them up with the mouse pointer an accidenly clicked attack on a bunny man.... I found out the hard way, they don't go to sleep if you hit one, they chased me around for several days until my mining hat ran out and i died to grue.... pitiful, i couldn't even climb the rope, cause of stunlock, and couldn't heal, i should have just tried to kill them rather than run, but didn't want to aggro any more...... so much for luck.... Should have had a meat effigy up, but.... w/e this character doesn't do well with sanity under 60...and i got distracted from the 2nd base.

Summary: The thing i learned this play through, is that, for willow a 2 base operation is absolutely necessary. Meat effigies are an absolute must. Things like twigs and grass, not as important as normal, and the lighter is far more useful than you might think once the world is edged. The other thing is that the sanity thing can be controlled very easily, i had a basic berry/meat base with no farms and rarely did sanity become an issue, the key to this character seems to be a quick start and to play her fearlessly. The benefits of no fire damage means you never need to actually start a regular campfire in the winter, this is quite nice, you can stand right in the fire with no problems. Also don't be afriad to beat the mess out of your enemies, i mean for crying out loud i had a marble suit in my pack i should have just beat the bunnies to death.

no this isn't during fire animation, the trees get "stuck" they don't grow anymore, but will still spawn a treeguard from nearby healthy trees.

If i'm not mistaken what likely happens in the game code is that the trees take fire damage, so their overall "hp" points go down just as if you had chopped them, except the if you get far enough away fast enough, the world "offscreen" mode for the game kicks in and the trees stay but with a lot lower hitpoints.

Makes for harvesting a wood lot nice and easy. Also this is an already fixed version of a previously fixed exploit that the whole forest would become like that, so it's not a truly massive range just enough to be helpful in game from time to time. I figure an exploit that has already been fixed is now part of the intended code.
