Can somebody tell me if this is a viable base building option?

Recommended Posts

So, I just died last night and woke up this morning to start fresh again. I wandered a lot of the map first to scout out good places to set up base camp, and that's where I stumbled upon the little off-sprout pictured in the attachment. If I build my base on there and fully seal myself in with walls, will I be at any risk from hounds etc...? Will they spawn inside my base, totally bypassing my wall or would the wall hold them out for a bit while I prepared to fight while they broke down the wall?

BUG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

why??

It's gonna b-be alright buddy. I-it's OK p-pal, we're here for you! I promise we can play soccer and catch-ball and slide down hills and swing on swings and throw frisbees tomorrow, you bet! Good night, sweet prince...*shoves pillow on face until struggle ceases*

Hounds spawn off screen and rush in to attack you from multiple sides.

As noted earlier, they will stop to Attack walls.

Technically, you can start and build a "panic/death trap  room" or a "only one way in filled with (suggested tooth) trapped corridors made out of stone." Whether you made this corridor of death or not, it's exceptionally recommended to make an corridor/area of tooth traps to go to and lure them in/near your base. If you don't mind potential spoilers, there's a Wiki entry for Hounds that also includes links to "hound survival guides."

My opinion is that walls are a hindrance because they can trap you in with nowhere to run. Make a field of tooth traps away from the flammable parts of your base. Build a firepit next to it in case the hounds attack at night. When hounds are incoming, go stand in the middle of your tooth traps. Dead puppies, free teeth gems and monster meat.

When it comes to worrying about hound attacks, or any other attacks there is only one thing you need: nearby Beefalo. Just run around the herd in circles and wait for the hounds to aggro on the Beefalo. Also, don't forget to bring a Beefalo hat!

On the topic of if that is a good place to build; I say no. IMHO the best place to build is in the wide open next to a crossroads that has access to multiple resources. Walling yourself in just spills disaster if something goes wrong.

I wouldn't say it's that good of a spot for a starting base.  A cramped area that needs a lot of cleaning up.  If it's hounds you are worried about early game, try setting up camp reasonably close to some pig's, beefalo, or frogs.  They kill the hounds which leads to you getting the teeth to make your own tooth trap doggy death field.

Long story short. If you build a stone corridor what is only one square wide, it will force the hounds to go after you single file. Of course this is assuming you make it with only one way in/out.

in fact due to the pathfinding, they will attack walls if they see those first

e.g my base has about 6 entrances, they still make their own...

The simplest way to deal with hounds is toothtraps.  Trust me, you'll get tired of rebuilding your walls every ten days.  But on the other hand, that's a really nice spot and I suggest you use it.

This x100

You can safely laugh at anyone who still builds walls and "rooms" to deal with hounds. All you need is a small minefield of tooth traps and you're golden.

To the OP... if that peninsula is bigger than the screen then hounds WILL spawn inside it.  I do like the proximity to the swamps and the touchstone but I would probably build my base on that savannah next to the path.
