Could i survive the caves?

Recommended Posts

So, im nearing my third winter, and this one i'd like to spend a good deal of time in the caves, since i've finally gotten enough dragonfruits to warrant living off dragonpies, i'd like to know if i could survive in intervals of 5 days in the caves with my current inventory (shown below, + dragon pies), and if not suggestions to improve?

As long as you bring log suits and a light source (miner + lantern is recommended) you shall be okay. Oh btw, don't bring any meat, just dragon pie and/or vegetables. This way you don't need to think of the bunnies attacking you.

And be sure to have a meat effigy/touch stone up and running to be sure you won't loose everything if you die!

I'd say you're overqualified to go through the caves,
Some food, a stack of sticks and grass for torches, gold for tools, a miner hat or two till you get lanterns and you're ready to go. If you can find chester before you go down I'd recommend it. He's a great help as you can have him carry your meat based rations without incurring bunnyman ire.

I once found a setpiece in the caves with a pond, fridge, chest, trees and a tent. Seeing as it was only day 7 I moved in there. It was glorious!

I hate you :p

Seriously, if you're up to your third winter, you're indeed ready if not overqualified. Just make preparations for food as listed above (or leave the meat at your cave base in your ice box) and sanity (Tams work best, but you'll have no problem with Top hats until you can get something as good.)

Just make a wrench if things get loose.

The first cave level is less threatening than we've been lead to believe, the area around the entrance is safe enough for early mining and exploration., i went down on day seven for a change of pace. Ended up finding the setpiece and decided to stay. Mushrooms, do well enough for sanity along with the tent and fur roll that was available in the setpiece.
A stack of wood, grass and sticks and you're good to go.

I hate you

Part of the reason im going down into the caves is to get some gears, i haven't been able to find the chess biome so the ruins is my best bet

Yeah, if in Season three you should be digging up every grave to try and get a gear or two. I doubt that sanity is an issue or that's what Taffy/Pumpkin Cookies/tents/Sleeping rolls/hiring multiple pigs are for.

Realistically, you find gears not on the first but the second level of the Caves (Ruins.) Respectfully, it would be a heck of a lot easier to find the Wooden Thing/Maxwell's/Chess biome than go looking for them in the Cave second level.Make a few Bacon and eggs, and go exploring, leaving no black spot unexplored for the Chess biome. Unlike the Pig King, it's guaranteed to be on every world, so it's there and a lot easier to find exploring than spelunking if not a cave veteran.

Trying to navigate getting used to light sources on level one alone is a whole new challenge (and also suggested wearing a Tam O' Shanter or at least Top hats until you get the Tam, so the lantern is the next suggestion for light.)  Trust me when I also say it's a lot easier to go into the caves when you have used gears for ice Boxes past the prototype. if you collect food, especially meat down there, you'll want a place to store them when in caves. Also, the prior cave level experience is completely different from the Ruins level. While you surely could find clockworks or even the chest/altar rare drop of gears, it's still highly recommended instead to just find the Maxwell's Biome or keep digging at graves.

However, unless playing WX-78 (and the pic looks like Wilson,)ice Boxes and the Divining Rod are the only things you need gears for initially, until you start using the Ruins to repair altars. Then it becomes a close-ended loop needing gears to repair the altar and damaging or destroying the altars and clockworks to get gears/Thulecite for the other altar repairs for Thulecite items as well as repairing clockwork allies.
