So let's talk about Depth Worms.

So far so good in the caves actually.  Not too sure about the ruins, but I'd be surprised if Klei didn't put in some way for the mobs to kill each other off.  And if Spazmatic is correct, then it sounds as if they did.  (Might not be the best solution anyway as the worms would eat the horn.)

Yeah but why go there? You don't need the items if you're not gonna fight.

You can brute force your way through situations if you want, there are plenty of fancy weapons and armors to use.  Personally though, I feel as if I've done something wrong if I'm actually fighting a mob myself.

This.

The worms hit hard and are hard to effectively hit back.  They're underground most of the time so you can't used ranged attacks.  They have no common natural enemy in the ruins.  It's like having to fight hound packs on the surface when they won't randomly attack other animals and no animals naturally attack them.  They are quite hard to deal with.  Being in the ruins is already challenging, with the worms its just too difficult to make it worth anything you get.

Do they trigger tooth traps?

They don't trigger traps and Bunnymen attack them on sight.

They do trigger traps, it's just not very effective.  I wonder if bee mines would be good against them?

EDIT: And you should be able to bring some lobsters down to the ruins.  I brought a few up to the surface and they've spread out and formed herds and are beginning to (slowly) multiply.  It's a long term sort of project though but it's coming along nicely.

Personally I think the waves shouldn't get harder the more days into the game you are; I think they should be hard from the very start, inside the ruins that is.  With how much harder they get it actually makes more sense to go into the ruins and loot everything before they start becoming more difficult, but I think the ruins should be something you have to work up to doing.

Bringing them to the surface...penning them for security...actually sounds like a great idea.

Traps work, but not very well.  They have to surface right on top of the trap, so you have to bring them to exactly the right spot and dodge before thier bite hits.  You spend a lot of time very close to them and it takes a long time so you're gonna pay in sanity.

The pan flute does nothing to them.

I brought a group of lobsters down with me, and they killed 2 of them, but once the very short time the lobsters follow you is up they walk away.  They're currently at the very south of the of ruins map running into the edge trying to get somewhere.

Yep thy're more useful one the surface than you'd think.

Has anyone tried an ice staff with the worms?

You cannot freeze the worms with an ice staff, but it does help when you have followers with you. Every time you hit the worm with your ice orb( let it emerge first) it will flinch and you can stunlock it at the cost of a lot of ice staff durability and sanity, depending on how many and which followers you have. Oh and a hit with the ice staff will not only make it flinch but also cancel the attack!

An example: I had 5 Bishops and 2 Knights as followers. It costed me 65% ice staff durability to stunlock the worm untill it died. It costs me about the same to only attack it when it emerges so it doesn't hurt any of my followers. It is worth noting that Bishops can only hit the worm when it is emerged, making them a less ideal ally for the job.

I tried tackling another worm with 6 bunnymen. It takes me 20% of my ice staff to prevent the worm from attacking anyone, and it dies rather quickly. Bunnymen plus ice staff seems to be key. You cannot freeze the worm but instead completely nullify his attacks anyways! Try it out yourself with 6 bunnymen and an ice staff @TeoSS69. Of course, this is just one worm at a time. More worms require you to use your ice staff more. It's basically like Whack the Mole, only your hammer is a staff that shoots an ice projectile and the moles are worms

Now with special combat footage!

Melee specific followers should be more useful. I will continue to test and share my discoveries :-)

My mouse died so i can't test it myself but try sleep darts too next time. They cost more but at least they don't eat my sanity.

They are a pain to use, and don't have any effect at all. They don't even make the worm flinch... A waste of resources imo.

Sigh, well i'll try lots of bee mines then. I've got lots of silk for bug nets. And i'll put some bunnies in there for good measure too...

So Rock Lobsters regenerate enough health after each spider attack to keep surviving on their own?

And also, there should be a trap specifically for Gobblers - so that you could hogtie them and offer them as a sacrifice or bait.

I'm no code expert but it seems like... My fully grown lobsters took out more than 200 spiders in one run in the caves. And those same lobsters are taking out Worms for me now and are still alive. So...

Would you recommend them over pigs/bunnymen for hounds too? Sounds pretty good since they don't go to sleep very often anyway.

Well yeah, although they'll act like Beefalo. You have to run around until the hounds to aggro them.

Hmm...actually, since they'll be near the spider dens, it'd be better not to since the red hounds in summer might set the dens aflame.

Or you might get a different herd some space away just for hounds. Though personally i'd stick with Beefalo as it'll cut their huge numbers later on and give me some extra meat.

What do you guys think about Worms not being able to surface on hardy turf, like rocky, cave rock, checkerboard and ruins turf?

It won't kill them but it'll keep them at bay, which means you'll have some breathing room but they'll still be waiting for when you'll eventually move out. Yeah, the movie Tremors comes to mind.
