It will never be solved...Prepare for intense lore that is probably not correct- He hates Mimes because they pretend they are in a box. Maxwell was trapped inside the painting, so he couldn't tell Charlie what was really happening. He hates the idea of being trapped. I think that's why he took all the characters to the island. To feel the same thing he did.
