I want to hear arguments here from both sides. Personally, I think this is likely a replacement sequel, considering the game does seem to be largely DST but expanded upon, which I think would be very good and healthy for the franchise, but I also recognize the very real possibility that this is just a spinoff similar to basically what Hamlet did.

I can see both sides of it, honestly. I doubt it would like, forcibly end DST, but I can totally see why development has slowed down if they were doing this in the background.

I myself don't mind if DST becomes the more "secondary" project receiving small context/QOL updates while Elsewhere becomes their new main project. I can definitely see some people being turned away from elsewhere compared to the more "settled" nature of DST. We will have to see, though!

Elsewhere surely explains why updates had longer wait times between each other and it could be a sequel, but what makes me think it could be an spin off is the expectamus puzzle, there you can see two Wagstaff that just have different clothes, the survivors in Elsewhere also look slightly different except from WX so maybe this is a different set of survivors.

I guess we'll find out once it is said whether this game will be focused purely on survival or if it will have a twist.

Well you see, that’s going to depend on if the game remains exclusive to steam, or if it eventually comes to other consoles like PS5, Series X/S, and Switch 2.

Why is that important you ask? Because they Won’t be held back by last Gen limitations and can actually design a new game from the ground up without having to worry about if last Gen hardware can still run it.

If the answer to that question is Yes, then Elsewhere is a true sequel… and will eventually replace DST as DST will slowly phase out for being too outdated to keep getting updates (without breaking older hardware)

I don't see it at all as an argument.

This is all on all a sequel, that's it. Dst 2 is ending and will slowly fade away.

EDIT: I'm saying this because just by looking at the trailer it's literally Ds2 but better. JUST LOOK AT THOSE BEAUTIFUL CAVESSSS, FINALLY. It makes me cry :wilsconnivingsmile:

even WX looks different! (They got a key hole on their chest and rimming along the head.

I'm hoping DSE is more survival focused rather than Boss focused (even if that means bosses that actively attack you instead of being passive) in which case I think a large playerbase will prefer DST over DSE. So if it is what I hope it is, I don't see it as a replacement.

I'm definitely open to the idea of DST's story coming to an end, but I'd hope that Klei puts their all into ending this game. I want the ending to be reflective of the 10+ years it took us to get to it. I also hope that DST will still get small content updates just to keep the blood pumping. Even if they are just permanently on QOL duty.

Skilltrees and riffs are not done so I doubt it’s a replacement.

Looking at the steam tags Klei gave it, it doesnt have “Sandbox” unless this was a mistake. It seems more rpg and adventure focused.

It might give a different niche.

it could replace it after their done with dst. Just because they are not done yet doesn't mean they can't just finish dst first, then release this new game.

just looked and it has "sandbox" now but it says it is "user-generated". When I checked DST and DS neither of them had "sandbox" from what I saw.

You are looking at the wrong tags.

Probably a spin off, considering that dst is still unfinished. Skill trees, rifts, and their promises of more pre rift content means dst can still get years of updates at minimum

We don't know when this game will be released. It could be years also.

Baseless guess: they're gonna take a year and a bit to finish up the shadow rifts and the rest of the skill trees, then follow up with DSE in late summer 2027

For now I think this is just a spin off. Klei has been know to be adaptive and it could one day end up becoming their focus. But I really hope this is a diffrent experience than what dst is and not just a sequel.

I want to see actual destruction than the basing game dst has become.
