Title.
After considering it the only negative I see is how one would acquire one and how useful it'd be for lucky world gen or wanting to map the ocean
other than that you can use it to locate important structures on the ocean like pearls and lunar and Crab king so you don't have to row everywhere

yes I know the astral detector can find Ck easily, however I think a spyglass for locating stuff could save a lot of time and having to deduce where lunar is by reading the map
maybe nerf the uses or make it have a slight drawback or just implement it like it is straight from shipwrecked (with a different design and crafting recipe ofc)

thoughts?

Spyglass is such a no-brainer idea and could be so useful on sea that I'm genuinely surprised that it's haven't been implemented yet.

My guess it's will be added but as a drop from wacky ocean raid boss after you open the rifts and at that point in world progression will be completely obsolete.

why would you think this

I'd love a way to fill out the little patches of ocean on my map that I know are just Sea Stacks. It's not bothersome enough to sail behind or mine through them but being able to Spyglass the whole section would make me 100% clear my map finally.

especially after that treasure update, sometimes I'm making way through those and finding sunken chests that would've been useful 200 days ago.

Seems a bit pessimistic. The Moon Quay is an obvious candidate for where to get the spyglass... which is still questionable since you'd probably want to use the spyglass to find the Moon Quay.

Maybe it could just be something the wandering trader sells?

Players direly need an option to fight against the randomness of world gen.

This game has probably the most consistent world gen of any survival sandbox I've seen. Is something in particular tripping you up? Because if so it probably has a very consistent way it generates.

There’s a ridiculously late game item called the horizon expandinator or whatever, I’m pretty sure that is intended to be DSTs “SpyGlass” and yes: By the time you kill the bosses required to get the item, you really don’t need the item anymore- It’s a Consistent problem DST has had with bad progression.

Anyway… Klei did a patch sometime back ago that finally allowed Xbox players to zoom on (or out) on their camera, so the entire horizon expanding thingy became even more pointless then it already was.

Personally though I wish they WOULD add a Spyglass into DST but make it function 100% identically to the way the Spyglass in “The Survivalists” work.

As in: you hold it out and view, and it uncovers a cone of the map in the direction you’re looking at. (Play the game you’ll see what I mean)

The spyglass reveals a cone of uncharted area on the map. The Horizon Expandinator just increases your field of view. They're different items.

Also I think the Horizon Expandinator would be underwhelming even if you got it early on, cuz it doesn't do much for a head slot item. It'd be nice if you could just find it in the junkyard right off the bat without having to fight two bosses, or if you could combine it with certain other headwear like the bandana or moggles.

Perhaps it can be made using the think-tank and require a blue gem and gold.

Why not an empty bottle instead of a blue gem? That's how Shipwrecked did it iirc, or is that too cheap?

My reasoning for not requiring a bottle is because it would require you to use a boat to make one (or marotter rng)... which in most sea-faring items, the point of it is to be ready before you go out into sea. The second reasoning is bottles are rng (well, to an extent you can get a bottle rowing in a straight line, but most people don't know that technique (and going into caves resets that timer), but the technique is also unreliable if you happen to have been rowing into an unknown land, a spyglass could have very well prevented that from occuring if you think about it), and I want a consistent way to explore the map better.

Yes… that’s what I meant, reveal a cone of what’s in view in the direction your looking within, but to avoid allowing players to use it in caves or on dry land, to equip the spyglass they need to be facing a large body of water, (so like used at the edge of the land, or while on a boat surrounded by water)

If Klei did it THIS WAY then it could even be a Day 1 item we can obtain and use pearls bottles to craft & it wouldn’t be broken or OP (except for its intended purpose of exploring ocean)

I don't think using it on dry land is an issue, and it would already be bad in the caves, since in Shipwrecked, spyglasses have their effectiveness massively reduced when it's night time/in darkness.

Klei forgot they can just press Ctr + C on shipwreck content and Ctr + V on DST.
That would make ocean 50 times better than current empty glass of water.

Why even need to avoid it?. Cave change make it is now an underground cliff now as there are no longer wall but deep cliff. Just allow it to be used on everywhere.

I been begging when they've added that wagstaff view expander was added for it to improve mapping, but only that was expanded was view and no more. It would have been a good scouting item, it still is but could have been better for general mapping of the world.

Only good explorer is Goose in Woodie's kit cause it walks over water..
