Do you think that the caves need an update?

Recommended Posts

Absolutely, joke or not.

The last update, despite being listed as a cave update, added a lot of more content that just takes place in the caves, rather than touching up the caves in of themselves.

Of course, all the new content ties into being in the caves, but I'd really wish they have gone in and reworked the aimless, barren, repeat biomes, and maybe even the weird generation you sometimes get.

Bring back some of the richer Ruins, and fix a lot of those broken/missing rooms and setpieces!

Really, my biggest issue is just how bad the caves are for general traversing. Outside of the mushroom biomes and maybe the staircase areas, the caves are filled with extremely stringy biomes with multiple gaps/spaces between areas. It feels very unfun to go around, let alone if you want to plan a base location you pretty much are forced into the former biomes.

Admittedly, the DS caves also had this issue, but the ruins lacked it (which bothers me further how much the DST ruins are…).

Bridges help a lot with this now!

Yes, the caves need an update.

The first thing they should do is bring back Don't Starve-style ruins generation. After that, update the other biomes.

How is it different between the games?

Instead of having a bunch of stupid, empty default texture bridges, it has vast areas full of nightmare lights, clockworks, and occasional statues. It's generally a lot bigger and has more resources and more threats. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3012767514&searchtext=ds+ruins This mod restores them.

Obviously, the recent update did jack in terms of updating caves themselves, with the only thing of note being the bridge and the worm. The devs called it a cave update only because it takes place in the cave; it was actually a shadow rift update

Like 80% of caves biomes are outdated and have little to no reason for exploration

Outside of bosses, ruins and lightbulbs (which 90% of the time can be found by the entrance) the caves offer little to no valuable loot untill the shadow rift is opened

Seasons almost don't affect the caves, which is a shame because I could certainly imagine at least a few things that could be different about the caves in winter vs the caves in summer

There's also nothing on the surface that would incentivise to basing in the caves, well, save for not wanting to spend summer in the oasis I guess

One thought I had: what if they made the cave forest biomes a bit more overgrown? I'm talking about the actual sunken forest biomes, for clarity, not just the cave entrance areas.

Maybe there's special tree stumps that act as natural mushroom planters. There could be predatory hanging vines from Hamlet dangling down from the ceiling that attack if you get too close and steal your edibles like marotters. Just little things like that.

change the "lots" to "default" and adjust the ratios accordingly. people want more content but also mostly keep the settings at default which forces the game to be stingy with populating biomes leaving a lot of empty space where there is nothing going on. instead of expecting people to do their own work why not account for this and just change the percentages?

As someone who does mess with the world settings a lot to fill in the emptier biomes, this doesn't really tackle the problem all that much.
Some settings can help a bit and make things a bit more interesting, but there's a lot of changes I'd love to see that aren't fixable with the current settings.

A lot of folks, myself included, want a more hands on revamp to a good chunk of the biomes. I'd like to see new stuff in the caves, unique content that fits in and interacts with a lot of existing cave stuff instead of just more of what's already down there, which is already a good handful of surface content.

You can touch up older content whilst adding new stuff to interact with them too, which I'd kill for to be done to most biomes down there. I'd like reasons to go down and explore those larger emptier guano biomes, or those vast empty rock fields.

The one thing about caves is that if you add too much stuff there, people who play on devices that can't handle them will be missing out on a lot of stuff. Although with Shadow Rifts being there I guess we already crossed that bridge so yeah, I'd appreciate some cave stuff. I suggest grubs and centipedes, call them warrior husks
