I already said.

there is already a struggle to get people to wear things other than beef hat or football helmet on the head and anything but backpacks/armor in the body slot is basically noncompete

Maybe something more extreme, like a gear that makes you immune to freeze damage, but very slowly drains health.

That would be nice but tbh I'd only use it if it was a helmet. I can't play without a backpack lol

I feel like it would just fall into same problem as the scalemail where its downside is too extreme to use in combat

feels like wes n maxwell would be punished(75 max health), wanda would be too risky(can't stay in the sweet spot of her age with two counters going at once) and walter would be unplayable entirely(he would just always be bleeding sanity)

So? It's pretty unreasonable to suggest that all characters should always get the same benefit out of every item. Wigfrid benefits more from the celestial crown than Maxwell, because while Wigfrid is constantly maxing her sanity in combat, Maxwell loses his crown power as soon as some shadow minions die. Meanwhile most axes are useless to Woodie, and plenty of characters opt for their own weapons over darksword / brightshade sword. Wanda can't use honey poultices or jellybeans at all, and Wormwood doesn't use garden hoes.

those aren't punishments though? they range from "less of a benefit" to "no loss or gain". this is not that, this is a net loss for 1/4th of the cast of characters. there is a distinct difference between something being not useful and something being actively dangerous for several characters for no reason other than to be hypothetically interesting in some edge cases. seems ill thought out to me and more likly to, as wormboi rightfully said, give it the same problem scalemail has of being too risky to use.

you also need to consider that this would, in the future subtly put weight on the scale of discouraging characters with lower health or possibly encourage traits with health stabilizing/gain properties which would contribute to power-creep.

For example, something that gives a lot of insulation, but has a noticable sainity drain.

It would be cool to have more options to choose to your liking. A discussion about the cat cap made me realise this.

that's crazy how often people say something is unusable due to the sanity drain but at the same time there are tons of people who say sanity is not a problem...

except this thing, i think it could work IF (which won't happen) the thermal stone gets nerfed qnd clothes get buffed.

HOT TAKE:

backpack should have 6 slots, piggy back 10.

I think people always complain about clothes being bad, but i think the problem aren't the clothes, but backapack and thermal stone...

Changing those 2 items is such a radical change, for cloths to work both need to get nerfed and I won't care because I'll still use the thermal fish instead. But nerfing the backpack will suck so much (even if the krampus sack wasn't nerfed with it.)

I dont even think you need to nerf backpacks. In UNCOMP they made it so that some body slot clothing items have pockets so you can still store some things in them.

Then use it as another character that it works well on. Your not forced to wear it.

This item slowly takes away your health. Like you take around 20 damage a day maybe. That is a good deal considering healing food is a thing.

yeah but what if you're in a bossfight? You dont want to be wasting a lot items in a boss

In a boss fight?

20 health a day is barely a consiquence for a boss fight. And, if you are in a boss fight, you probably set up a fire put so dont need warmth.

I think you are mistaking me talking about the scale mail. Im talking about the other thing.

that is a very silly "solution". if an item is so awful the only way to tolerate it is to change characters then the item is too poorly designed to exist and is worth less than nothing. at this point you are basically making a good case for why there isn't more clothing with downsides. it is more work for a broken item that thousands of players cannot use many thousands more would never use and still yet more wouldnt even know was broken and badly designed because there is no reason to choosing it over just continuing to use thermals and fish

Personally I would have loved if early game gear all had downsides and we'd slowly work our way up to gear that didn't have downsides then after that gear that gear that's strong with downsides and finally gear that's strong without downsides but that would require a ground up rework to the level of being a different game altogether.

i main wes and i second maxwell, i know two maxwells, i know three wes, i know two walters, i know two wandas, i follow a wanda and a walter on twitch. just because i am personally invested doesnt make my statement untrue.

also 4 out of 15 is a lot. it is slightly less than 1 in 3

yea i know, and i like that change .

But the thing i'm trying to say is, what's the problem? Backpack being too good or clothing sucking? Even though we'd say the second i think the answer is the first. Backpack costs 0 resources and it's way better than clothes obtained from bosses, most people keep it for their entire run, and others don't even use body armor due to the backpack.

Yea i know, nerfing the backpack would be too controversial, but at least in theory would be the right thing to do.

I really think that klei should add another equip slot for armor slot for us to carry backpack and thermal clothing. I don't even think that this is that strong but changes can be made.

I always carry backpack or krampus sack because it is BIS and I gather a lot of stuff/play Wanda and waste a lot of inventory space on clocks. If 95-98% of players only use backpacks no matter how much you nerf them we won't switch to thermal clothing because every inventory slot matters.

Thermal stone is fine in the current state, I don't want more upkeep or to be forced to wear beefalo hat/eyebrella during the specific seasons. Not everyone finds season temperatures to be that fun to manage after experiencing them so many times over the years.

In my experience there are a lot of players on endless servers that only play summer/autumn and skip winter/spring depending on their preference because having a cave base literally nullifies 2 seasons and this is normal as it only shows that players don't like dealing with survival elements especially after X amount of days (1000+).

oh man, i have been a supporter of separating backpack and body since the beginning!  dapper vest would go from f-tier to a-tier immediately if it didnt cost the backpack to wear(lol rog nostalgia here wasting so much teeth because i liked it more than the tophat)
