Klei Skin team should prioritize giving skins to items that don't have skins, instead of giving the same thing a 5th skin

Recommended Posts

As in title.

There are many items, structures, etc. that have skins and still get skins even though they have ones. This makes some items forgotten, and without any skins. Why make something forgotten this way? Even worse if it's an item used by most players, like dreadstone equipment, rift equipment.

Worst offenders are probably wurt's merm warrior houses, dreadstone set, rift sets, character exclusive items like Lucy the Axe, etc.

It also does not make sense from a money standpoint. Why would I buy an another axe skin, if I can buy the new skin to the Dreadstone Set? I would be more willing to buy and be more satisfied from buying a nice skin to an item I don't have a skin for.

i think its more so because there more people out there using an axe then using dread stone armor, like when was the last time (not yourself) that someone used dread stone instead of an axe? its stupid, but its only logical, i mean sometimes we do get random excheptions and like that

yeah, basically what echsrick said; it makes more sense from a financial place to make skins for things people use often and readily. a lot of people don't even have wurt so a wurt-exclusive skin set is not a great idea, there are so many people who will never be able to use it. dreadstone is a fairly "new" item in the scheme of things and is not accessible to the majority of players as it is locked behind a fairly high skill threshold but any idiot with a couple grass n' twigs can make a torch

you have to keep in mind most people playing aren't anything like the forumites and they arent using complicated/niche items. it is just a facto f life, klei has to think of those people too

Definitely. One must always keep in mind that the only way the game adds to the income is via the purchase of cosmetics / spools(?) / dlc characters, so they must focus on what is most "popular". (I suppose they have statistics for that? At least why shouldn't they?)

yep, they have the numbers on what sells and what people are (in a general sense) doing and what is/is not working. i also would not doubt they have more bespoke datapools to draw on as well

Nightlight, orange amulet, grass walls, skins for bushes and other plants perhaps.

Though we gotta remember that people often buy skins likely for the things they use most often. It's hard to want to want a skin that you don't use after all. Not everyone here is a builder or a spender, but perhaps they can think of something for items that really need skins or better looking ones.

And good so! After all it would be sad for the game to be given up. (I seriously hope it will exist for another 20 years!)

This is how I feel about items like backpack/walking cane skins. Since the overwhelming majority of players will use backpacks and especially the cane in their worlds, it only makes sense that these have so many skins. A similar thing can be said for chests/prototyping stations/iceboxes.

It is unfortunate that some items (like the dreadstone set) don’t have skins yet, but compared to things like an icebox, which way more players are going to see/use, it only makes sense.

BC I don't like how dreadstone armour looks. I'd use it more if I preferred how my character looked with it on

Backpacks have sub elegant skins. Common even. Would be nice if we had common skins for chests. Literally everyone uses chests.

People can make logic and excuses for Klei, but man, so many things continue to not make sense to me.

I think character skins are a bit of a contradiction as well when asking why dreadstone set doesn't have a skin.

Not every player plays a given character. Especially wurt, who is functionally locked behind a larger paywall than all other skins.

By that logic why give her a skin over giving dreadstone one?

Also, someone please tell what on earth logic there is to not have this as a skin for the actual berry bush?
if they must, supplement a few roots on it and it would look right at home.

It certainly seems like the right choice to go straight to klei's defense, seeing as how they do take a lot of the brunt of naysayers, but I mean, come on. It's really the small things they could be doing. Even if it slightly milks things from their other work, it's work they've done the complete legwork for.

Interpreting some things that klei isn't doing is giving me the brain version of a heart attack.

Common skins for chests that are just a recolor. Easy money.

Reusing assets from hamlet to make hay walls into topiary hedges from hamlet.

What logic? It's about priority, it's obvious that Klei won't prioritize a niche item, it doesn't mean that the item will never have a skin, basically every skin pack has a very niche item. Characters are another thing entirely too, and they have very different established dynamics, it's to be expected that eventually this or that character will receive, for example, Swashbuckler, but there's no history whatsoever to expect a vintage 2 line to happen with this or that item specifically.

I would argue that more people use items more than they would a character on the lower end of usage.
It' wouldn't be so unreal to me that dreadstone armor, both sets see more usage than Wurt or Walter in their entirety.

I don't want to have to do it, but I could probably boot up the game to find a skin on an extremely unused item.

Hell, even wickerbottom books get skins, and it's kind of one of the more pointless skins to put on an item altogether.

Dreadstone a niche item? xD it's better than thulecite 100%, and more easily accessible

It's still not very popular regardless, a skin for the Walking Cane would sell more anyway, but even so Klei makes skins for these items, it just won't be a priority.

Last cane was a free drop. Not sure what stops klei from even making dreadstone a free drop. Even with a minimalistic design.

idk. at a certain point, arguing just isn't productive. What do you have to gain from preventing dreadstone from getting a skin?

I don't understand where you got the idea that I have some agenda against Dreadstone armor specifically, but yes, I am personally preventing the skin from being released. If I hadn't said that niche items don't and won't have priority, they would have already been released, or whatever you mean???

Gauging interest. There are requests for dreadstone armor to get skins from many corners, but all it takes is a few naysayers and it's probably justified that certain items don't get a skin.

"No one uses dreadstone armor anyway."
etc etc.

A stupid melon hat that I never use or craft has 3 different skins, meanwhile dreadstone helmet which I use every day doesn't have a skin. Go figure.

I can understand why brightsmithy and shadow plinth crafts don't have skins yet. They are following a specific theme and need to belong to the same color scheme to match the materials they were crafted from. But other powerful headgear/body armors all got skins. Bone helmet and armor, night armor and dark sword (multiple skins), and even CC crown got one! Date of release doesn't make sense either. When furniture and gramophone got added to the game, each item got 2 skins on release and an additional one within a month. They could have done it with dreadstone set as well.

Honestly, I was pretty surprised when Wurt and Winona didn't get any skins for their crafts when they got their skilltrees. It only made sense... Winona is in the game for how many years? and she still does not have any skins for her catapults/generators... And Wurt has only a skin for the normal merm house. weird

Are people really using top-hats? Like unironically? I think we have quite enough of those, they would be far better suited for the tam-o-shanter because that's definitely something people use and a lot of the creature skins have the same kinda "shape" as the tam-o.

I also really wish Willow got a new lighter skin with her Archaic set, Bernie as well but I understand Bernie now having 3 different forms makes it a bigger job to make a skin for but at least the darn lighter.

Tentacle Spike also needs a skin pretty badly, with Wurt getting her skill tree I'm sure at least average-level players are going to base in the Marsh and farm those as they're abundant for a long time. I also use them quite often since they're a no-cost 50 damage weapon that doesn't expire.

WHY? Let's be honest, I remember when Klei added skins for the Tackle boxes, and some people getting mad because "Is an item that no one use" no matter if it's the first skin that the item get. Also in the last update, we got the first skin for the Insulated pack an item that exist for years and just now got a skin, and the opinions are between "At last" and "Who use that thing anyway?"  Items like dredstone helmet will be the same, if you use it you will be happy, if not it will be another pass.

In the other hand I also think that they should prioritize skins for items that don't have it, mostly to make it easy to know whose the item is, like when I use Bernie skin when another Willow is in the same server, and because I'm done with torches skins, lantern skins, backpack skins etc...
