Late art critique on the Nightvision tree

Recommended Posts

I wanted to do this sooner (3 weeks ago when the art was shown off)  I was able to decompile the art to get a better look at it, so at least there's a good side to waiting.

There's this weird rim lighting on the Nightvision tree that's been bugging me, it looks unnatural, I've seen it described as "plastic looking" and I have to agree, trees aren't typically shiny like this within the games art style, my other issue is the trunk of the tree being bland? I don't know how else to describe it? To me, It looks like some generic fantasy tree and just doesn't look very "Don't starve-y", and visually it looks like the tree was supposed to be bigger but was shrunk down? Like it was supposed to be the same size as the cawnival one but was shrunk is the best way I can describe that. I think the implication is that it's an ancient Spikey Tree given how it looks visually, and where you're supposed to plant it, I think the trunk would benefit visually if it looked more like Spikey Trees. But If I do have to say one positive thing the line art is really good, and I like how there are loose lines that taper coming of the leaves.

I hope at the very least my main issues get addressed, one, is the weird rim lighting on the Ancient Nightvision Tree and seed, remove that and the quality will instantly improve, and two the trunk could look more visually interesting. At the bare minimum please remove the Rim lighting.

Would be amazing if there was a mod that changes the tree's texture to the other tree!

I think the idea of shine to it is that it's extra slimy or greasy or something, though they should convey that more for being a gross swamp tree than a pristine shiny spiky boy. Make it spooky and edgy kind of gross from swamp environment making it that way.

Both of the trees look off imo.

I remember seeing it in the stream and thinking it looked like something out of one of Klei's other games. I don't really think it matches, but your concept definitely does.

I thought of rotwood

YO LOL it's a new sprite right?

Yeah, quite honestly it's a huge improvement seeing it in game now, the rim lighting did make it look really out of place, seeing things in game VS. in the program can make a huge difference and you know, I'm not trying to pessimistic or look a gift horse on the mouth but. I still see some rim lighting on the spikes and vines (the fruits being shiny is fine that makes sense.). FrostyMentos mentioned the lighting might be to make it look "slimy or greasy" but that's honestly not what I see, and I feel like if that was the intention they would've done it differently.

I'm still happy, it looks a lot better now. :applouse:
