(Solved!) What is the “True” maximum stack size of the new chest upgrade?

This is a bit more of a silly question, but I am genuinely curious.

On the dev stream, the stack size visually shows it going up to “999”, but it can (and will) go higher then that if you add more items to it, it just won’t show higher then that visually. However, I am curious what the “true” upper limit of this is, from it either being a “flat” limit (like 1,000,000 items) or an integer limit (like the 16 bit day count limit of 65535). It probably won’t matter in 99% of cases, but I’m always curious when it comes to things like this!

Probably the integer limit but i do wonder what happens if we go above the limit does it crash? Does it reset to 0?

Slightly offtopic but did they mention/show how the upgrade is acquired? 

curious to know how much it costs/when its made available.

This is gonna be such a great feature. 999 twigs and 999 grass in just two slots of 1 chest instead of just 360 grass filling an entire classic chest… sheeeesh

There is an item with an unknown recipe that you can put on chests and it will upgrade them. It is probably a scrappy werepig drop or a junk pile blueprint drop.

May also be a void craft after openings rifts.

They said it was late game, so I'm guessing its a scrap craft but requires spark arks, pure brilliance, or something like that.

That is an interesting question, though I'm personally still hung up on what would happen if a chest full of hundreds of item stacks breaks.

Not "do they split into smaller stacks", that was already answered, I'm just concerned about the metaphorical implosion that this would cause to a worlds' performance if something like deerclops or bearger breaks someone's storage.

Granted, by the time you get to that point you ideally SHOULD be able to handle most things that can break stuff, but it's those rare moments you simply forget or mess up that are scary to me here. I certainly know that my little laptop would probably not appreciate it to suddenly deal with potentially thousands of item stacks exploding into existence out of nowhere.

they could make it so 999 of them would drop in 1 stack but picking them up would only do that stack by stack using their normal stack value, so picking up a pile of 999 rocks will give you 40 rocks and reduce the pile to 959

They said it was late game, but they also said nightmare fuel was late game. Due to that, plus them saying "but you guys are really good, so you'll probably get it really quickly" (or something along those lines) I think it's probably earned from the new scrappy werepig fight. You need to go to the ruins to get a pick/axe, then kill the nmwp, then possibly wait for him to be able to spawn at the scrap pile, then kill the scrappy werepig. That sounds like something that would fit with "lategame (like nmf), but you can get it quickly", would fit thematically with the junkyard, and would incorporate new content that's already been shown off. They didn't show what the reward is for killing the scrappy werepig, after all.

Update: we now have an exact amount!

In a DST ambassador discord, one of the users made a message about the exact limit of the chest. DiogoW, one of the devs, replied with this:

math.huge is a term used to describe a number that goes up to 2^1024 . Now, you might be asking, how much is that? Well, it’s only a mere 179769313486231590772930519078902473361797697894230657273430081157732675805500963132708477322407536021120113879871393357658789768814416622492847430639474124377767893424865485276302219601246094119453082952085005768838150682342462881473913110540827237163350510684586298239947245938479716304835356329624224137216 total items that could be stored! Overall, this basically means that you should never need to worry about somehow filling one of the slots in the chest all the way.

TLDR: you are more likely to have a myriad of other factors occur then ever hope to reach a “true” full stack in the chest!
