More bite sized crossovers!

Recommended Posts

Since the current DST arc is based around unusual rifts opening in the constant more small crossover updates would make some nice additions. Im pretty sure the portals from Cult of the Lamb crossover trailer were basically ones simular to the rifts from vanilla DST. Not like crossovers not making sense in the lore is a big problem but it just suits the theme and I just want a reason for more crossovers. Small crossovers like this that just adds simple skins would really spice up the game when the big updates are still cooking. Basically just wanted to suggest more crossovers. This last one really reminded me of the Stardew Valley pet from Terraria with the way ho the both pets just appear out of a portal.

I like the terraria crossover, new content that adds to the game like a normal mainline update. If you never knew what Terraria was, you could look at the Terraria content and not suspect it was from another game. They still could have gave the twins special abilities or something, it does not seem unusual for dst.

Both previous crossovers have been with rogue-lites, If this trend is to continue.. I’d love to see a cross-over between Spelunky/Spelunky 2 & DST. Spelunky has quickly become one of my favorite games I never knew I needed, it’s like ALL those Mario & Sonic games I played and beat as a kid has lead up to Spelunky.

I choose this game/Franchise for its bizarre mob types (there’s giant exploding frogs, vampires, walking skeletons, crabs that spit acid bubbles etc..)

Not only would it be “Cute” to see some Spelunky mobs in DST, it would be cute to see some DST mobs added to Spelunky (such as hounds, lure plants, MacTusks) Maybe some of the games cast as Spelunkers (Wilson, Willow, Wendy, etc)

This would also be an excellent time to improve the scrapbook to be more like the journal in Spelunky (keeping stats detailing how many times you’ve killed/died to each of the games mobs etc..)

I love Don’t Starve & love Spelunky, this seems like a match up made in Heaven :wilson_love:

Literally anything that brings in more skins.  cotl brought !!2!! new chest skins!!!  This is soooo useful and amazing!  I like the cobblestones re-skin too, now I can have different kind of roads.  I love it!

I think a bigger crossover would be cool but could feel over-done like imagine 3-4 different cross over bosses like the eyeballs...  It could feel like DST becomes just marketing for other games...  but with some cute re-skins that are both a reference and fit the world of DST, and stay away from stealing the show (cotl idol is basically same as sisturn or dwarf star etc) could keep going without risk imo

The Cult of the Lamb crossover was much better than the Terraria crossover. A couple of skins is much better than an obtrusive boss. Too many of either type of crossover would make the game feel less like Don't Starve and more like a Fortnite-esque advertisement for other things, but Terraria sized ones would do that waaaay faster.

Terraria is not a roguelike or roguelite though?

Whats the problem with the eye? Its essentially optional so its not really obtrusive in any way. Its a fun fight imo and makes some other early bosses feel a bit dated in comparison like deerclops with their one attack (feastclops should be base deerclops honestly). Though it does go down way too fast, like even with just 2 players it dies before it can do anything.

Fair enough I suppose but I think the low base hp combined with the fact that it spends a lot of time in long attack and spawning animations makes it really noticable in this case.

I'd rather not. Crossovers are good in small moderation, otherwise the original media loses its original self and becomes a cesspit of references

The best crossovers would be with other 'base-building' games, so that we can get some decorative structures that would be belivable in dst.

Otherwise, just keep crossovers limited to skins only, since they don't interfere with the gameplay

Terraria is not a roguelike/lite

It is extremely obtrusive. It's a miracle if I'm able to kill the EoT in less than 10 days with less than 3 teamkills and ToT in less than 30 days with less than 10 teamkills. No idea why it still spawns on random players even though you explicitly spawn it, if you explicitly spawn EoC he spawns on top of you, he doesn't spawn on some dude who joined 3 minutes ago and just got the game today. They just made this spawning mechanic up for no reason. They're trolling.

That would all depend on what settings you have toggled while playing. I would very much consider Terraria to be a RogueLite/Like if you only get one life the entire game.

If the layout of the map/biomes, the location of items in the world Changé up every time you die & have to restart- that’s the very definition of a RogueLite.

Yeah thats fair I honestly forgot about its spawning mechanics cause I almost always play solo. It definitely should just spawn at the terrarium. Still other than that I think its a fun boss.

Its not primarily designed around having a single life nor is that the intended experience, its just a difficulty option. Hardcore modes are a thing in a number of games along with some level of variance but that doesnt mean that all those games are roguelites.

I'm glad you forgot about Bugsnax

BugSnax was a really good game, and because it’s a game about bugs shaped like food, and DST equally has mobs that are shaped like food, the connection makes a ton of sense.

No I wasn’t expecting Grumpuses to be added to DST, but what I would’ve loved was some of the bizzare food shaped mobs to be added to DST.

Sigh..

One Quick Google search and you’ll see that DONT STARVE (the original game) is listed in the top 47 RogueLite/likes of all time..

It was actually BECAUSE of Dont Starve that I found my favorite gaming genre with games like Slay the Spire, Spelunky, Enter the Gungeon, Gunfire Reborn, Tainted Grail Conquest. Etc..

It's not but you're welcome to your opinion though Mike :)

I mean, I don't see Terraria, so - I'm glad you agree?

Terraria isn’t in that list because Terraria isn’t a “By the Books” RogueLike/lite, meaning that Procedurally generated worlds/items/challenges, and more importantly Character Permanent Death, aren’t core features of Terraria.

It doesn’t count (on that particular list) if it’s a game mode you can toggle on/off.

However- That same list also includes a RogueLite DLC for a game that isnt a RogueLite.. Prey..?? Really..

Biased list is Biased.

But it does give you a general IDEA of what a RogueLite/Like is & should be.

State Of Decay & SOD 2 would be considered Roguelites/likes- zombies & quests are procedurally generated, characters die permanently when you mess up.

So for that biased list not to include SOD but does include a DLC for a game that isn’t even a rogue lite.. shows you how biased said list actually is.

Its a bit of a stretch- but there’s a argument to be had if Battle Royale games qualify as RogueLite/Rogue Likes as well. Death is Permanent.. guns aren’t always found in same location, map changes every other season/update.
