Beta players, your thoughts on scrapbook?

Recommended Posts

I didn't play beta yet, because vanilla makes no interest to me, and Uncompromising Mode is unstable with some beta stuff, but I'm curious on what others think about scrapbook (or other catalogs like plant registry or cookbook).

I read all the patch notes though, and I think it is a good addition to the game, but mostly for experienced players.

Why? Because they already know how to play, how to cook, and most (if not all) tools' stats, so for them this book will be just a reminder of what they already knew to not open the wiki every time.

But for new players it will instantly unlock an item info as soon as they Inspect it, making wiki and self-research sort of obsolete. "Sort of" because some things like different attacks and ways-to-obtain still don't show in the scrapbook.

Imo making it an "actual" book like with cookbook and plant registry would be better, because it makes it easier to ignore it if you don't want to use it, like myself. And if you still want to use it "by demand", you can install a mod that makes it a UI button.

Whaddya think?

just a menu option to toggle the scrapbook is all that is needed. I actually don't like that the icon is hidden when you don't have anything else to discover. I would like for it to be an optional button near the map corner

I would like if drops and stats for mobs would both be unlocked by killing the mob, and I feel it's a bit on the nose as a guide though I could excuse it if it was an optional crafting item rather than an entirely new addition to the base UI.

ah, it also shows mob's drops just by inspecting it? then yea, it would be a nice idea

It shows the drops after killing it but it doesn't count towards unlocking it's stats which are only shown when you inspect the mob, so you can kill a mob and only obtain their drops if you don't inspect it before hand.

It won't provide the depth of info that the wiki does, but it will provide enough base line information that a player should feel reasonable able to learn as they play without looking outside the game for info.  A good addition.

It takes away from the very core of what made DS special, but it's not brought to the original DS so it's just a matter of telling new players to play DS first and to turn it off.

I don't think experienced players like it either, most people who tested the beta just want an option to turn it off. The default scrapbook is bothersome and intrusive. It also made the game feel less immersive. True that DST would benefit greatly from a beginner guiding system, but unfortunately that the solution wasn't something more elegant like Wilson's notebook.

What mobs would this be useful for?

Mobs with % based drops.

I'd argue there's plenty of things that's happened for years now that's already done this however I 100% stand behind this one. The game doesn't do a good job at helping you organically learn things so I feel like this is really a good step in the right direction. I think we could even take it a step further for example examining pieces related to quest lines like suspicious marbles could faintly hint players in the right direction.

Console players can't install mods and even then like Pedro said all we need to do is put a setting in the options to turn it off.
