Any way to block mosquitos? I want to base next to a mosquito pond.

Recommended Posts

It looks like Bee Queen can fly over walls, but grumble bees can't?  I just walled in a mosquito pond, but I did it really closely and can't tell if the mosquitos are spawning outside the wall, or just flying over it.

Update 1: It files through a stone wall

Update 2: it flies through a marble statue.

non-boss flying things don't fly over walls, they fly around them UNLESS they can't path to the target, in which case they will ignore the walls to fly there.  So you can't really wall around a mosquito pond b/c they'll ignore the walls to get to you.  You can put something else inside with them like a bunnyman and it will fight them on spawn to keep them from harassing you, I do that with bats a lot.

What about leaving a gap in the wall that's filled with a tree or a sign or something?  The way we do for the Lavae?

I think it comes from pathing.  If they are flying and try to path to something, and they don't find a path then they ignore collision.

I think they also ignore walls when they are off-screen, so even if something worked while on-screen, if you went away and came back, they might be outside the enclosure.  I think there is no reliable way to do this, aside from walling another mob in with the mosquito, like bunnymen, as you said.

I'll just not base there.

On a Wurt world I had I just placed unfortunate merms next to the ponds, whom were on a permanent war against mosquitos.
On the bright side you'll get more mosquito sacks than you can ever dream of, in just a couple of years. On the bad side, you won't really have many uses for that...

actually.. if you have a noob friend who likes to play as Wes because they like the look of Wes (completely unaware that he’s intentionally the hardest character in the entire game to play as..) Your Wes friend will die, and they’ll die a lot, they will misplace, loose or have their Personal craft Balloons destroyed, They can use those Mosquito sacks to craft more Pile’o’Balloons.

Its a pretty useless use for mosquitos, but if someone loves playing as Wes, maybe it’s helpful information so they don’t get locked out of Wes’s unique special crafts.

The way I knew was to tp them to lunar island archipelago/a part of the map you don't visit. Since ponds have a limit on how many mosquitoes they can have, after you tp all the mosquitoes the pond is able to spawn, they should be "frozen" in that unloaded area unable to bother you anymore.

Not sure if this still works though...

there's actually simple solution however it depends on the character your playing a survivor who doesn't have the monster (Webber) or imp (Wortox) tag just place bunnymen near the ponds you want to use just be careful with meat. Just as a heads up Wormwood and Wurt are safe because they have neither of these tags.

Alternatively if your playing Wurt you can build Merms arounds the ponds instead

Edit: read through after and realized my suggestions were already mentioned...

With Webber placing a tier 3 spider den is also an option.

mosquito spray would be nice if it was add in the game, especially for wurt

Yea something like this:

Then again i wonder what substitute materials would be used instead Tubers and Flytrap stalk

If you were to try this, how would you socket more purple gems without loading the area? If you load the area will they try to fly back to the pond?

Are you able to catch the mosquitos with a bug nest and they still are part of the mosquito cap for that pond when in your inventory? If so, you can catch the max amount with a net, sail out to a remote corner of the map, drop them all and then teleport yourself back home with purp staff. I know that bundling mobs "severs" them from their homes like with moleworms, so that's not an option.

Just tested this, each swamp pond can hold a max amount of 3 mosquitos that it will spawn with a certain amount of time that needs to pass before releasing each. Killing one of the mosquitos will cause the pond to regenerate it. Catching the mosquito with a net also counts as severing it from the pond, which means the pond will regenerate a new one and of released, those mosquitos will just try to fly back to coordinates (0,0) because they are homeless. (sorta like if you catch a bee with a net and release it, the hive regenerates more and the bee becomes homeless.)

If you were to teleport a mosquito with a telelocator staff/focus set up, the mosquito is still linked to the pond and therefore the pond cannot spawn additional mosquitos. So in theory yes one could set up a teleloctor focus on a boat sailed out into the middle of the ocean and try to teleport ones self back to main land. This is tricky though because as soon as you load in the mosquitos they will try to travel immediately back to the pond since they are out of range, which means every time you approach the remote area where you've placed your telelocator focus to socket more gems for teleporting all 3 mosquitos, you run the risk of them inching their way back to main land, and eventually the pond. Alternatively, you could build three telelocator foci on a boat in some corner of the world and load them all up at the same time with the gems, but this is extremely expensive for just one pond to be cleared (so if you need more than one to be mosquito-proof, it's gonna be an insane amount of resources) and you probably wont be able to hammer them back down to get any of it back. But this is technically an option.

Bummer.  I was wondering about catching them and putting them in bundling wrap, but even if the bundling part would work, the catching part wouldn't.

Ty so much for testing!!

Depending on a lucky map generation, you could have a corner that is a good ways away from anything important, set up the tp area with 3 telelocator foci and mark it with Wanda (could also work with Wortox tp, or ""just"" a 4th and 5th focus to tp yourself back and forth as any character), tp the mosquitoes, and then tp yourself back to recharge.

Mosquitoes should fly away from the area, and towards the pond, but still be "frozen" in the ocean. Since you're getting back in without loading the way to the corner, they should never be able to get back to the mainland. Maybe worth it late game just so you won't be bothered in your base.

inb4 update spawns new island right on top of the mosquitoes

Pretty sure it also works with frogs and bearger, maybe it works with bats and Moose?

Edit: Just tested it, you can't build telelocator focus on boats >:( (As Cr4zyFl4mes told us, tyty)
Unless you have forbidden knowledge abt building them on boats? (maybe that crazy bug that brings boats into lands?)
You could achieve similar results by using docks on monkey island, but that would entail not having a reason to go there so you don't load the mosquitoes.

Edit2: Doesn't work with bats.

I was able to build tele focus on boat, strange. Maybe it was just cause I had freecrafting?

Got any mods? c_freecrafting doesn't affect placement requirements.

Telelocator Focus was restricted from being built on boats due to being able to insta kill bosses by breaking the boat, was a lame band-aid fix at the time. With the inclusion of docks they finally made it so bosses just wash ashore like players and other entities, rendering this band-aid fix useless. I wish they'd revert it, of all the times I'd like to use telelocator focus's, boats/ocean is one of them, but alas, we are unable.

Or are we? It is possible to get a telelocator focus onto the ocean and stick it to the edge of a boat, effectively building a telelocator focus on boat.

(Similar to how flotsam sticks to your boat)(I have no idea how to spell flotsam)
